direct conversion allowing for the extra 3% VAT is €287, so €299 isn't the worst. (in reality the TV is probably being sourced in € so they're just discounting it slightly in the UK).

3 year guarantee is handy to have - any bought an Aldi TV before?

Interesting. Could people more in the know than me tell me if the specs are good on this tv?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,329 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

tell me if the specs are god on this tv?

I think god would have a better TV than this.

2" bigger and extra years warranty on the Aldi option.

    No comparison.

Blaupunkt is a generic brand these days.

Will this be Saorview ready out of the box?

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 133 ✭✭Volvoair

no satellite tuner ? so still need a second box and another remote....
2x8watt speakers...not exactly mind blowing sound...
still, it has a three year guarantee

I agree you CAN'T compare Blaupunkt to Aldi's own brand ...

My sister bought a small telly from them about 5 years ago still in perfect condition...never had a days trouble with it

My 39" Blaupunkt says it needs a Rev 9 SKY remote - number is inside the battery cover.

But it works as a UMC brand with a Humax remote control.

Really with TV's it would be nice to know the make and model of the LCD panel.

    Someone better tell Tesco so.

I think Blaupunk just lend their name to whoever makes their TVs these days rather than make them themselves, I bought a Blaupunk 40" a few months ago and honestly the sound is terrible on it and the Sky remote doesn't work with it

exactly - they're cheap TV's with a Blaupunkt badge on them, they're unlikely to be any better than the Aldi or Tesco Technika brands.

DID have a Panasonic 42" for 390 this weekend - anyone like to offer an opinion as to whether it's worth the extra 90 over the Aldi TV?

Pros: It's 100Hz, a better brand, has more powerful sound, will probably work with a Sky remote (apparently the recent Aldi TVs don't).
Cons: It doesn't have a 3 year guarantee & has one fewer HDMI ports.

Do you have evidence of this, a link perhaps, or is it just speculation?

Panasonic 100hz is actually 50hz. Not that you'll find much source material beyond 50hz...

Just do a bit of research (any search engine will expedite your effort) as it's not exactly secret information.

    Slovakian UMC http://www.umc-slovakia.sk/company/blaupunkt/

They do Bush, E-motion and some Tevion too.

So some TV manufactures outsource their manufacturing. Is that unusual?

No, worldwide practice, Samsung and Sony used have the same company make their panels

I just googled it after I bought the TV because the sound was so crap, as another poster said, it's not exactly secret information! I should've googled before I bought....

The Panasonic A-series aren't "real" Panasonic's either, dunno if Vestel or UMC or some other crowd.

I got one. Havent taken it out of the box yet though. Was there at 9 expecting there to be a rush for them. there wasnt. I was only person there that early getting one. They had 12 in total in Arklow. Three Dyson hoovers were in stock and were snapped up in ten seconds.
Looking on HDUK people who bought it and used it yesterday are very very happy

I think there is some misinformation bandied about on this thread regarding re-badging of 'back street" TV's to well known brands. Each TV 'manufacturer' own the design/development and distribution of their TV's. It is normal practice for TV companies to outsource the actual assembly of the TV units to 3rd party manufacturing sources. So a Blaupunkt TV is a Blaupunkt TV, having it physically manufactured by another company does not change that.

In the case of Blaupunkt, I think thats not strictly true. As far as I remember it, Blaupunkt was acquired by a Venture cap fund, and its assets were stripped and sold, Manufacturing plants, IP and brands. The Czech company acquired the Blaupunkt brand and market TV's under the Blaupunkt name.

Thats slightly different from Panasonic sending their entry level TV design to a Subcontractor in Taiwan for manufacturing.

Yes, you have three year warranty with Aldi and they are excellent for sticking to it. Keep your receipt obviously, or take a photo of it after you buy it like I do

double check that it isn't something as like Radio Mode or whatever they call it

many TV's allow you to turn off the display to save power if you are just listening to a radio channel

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭jimbobwalton

Don't think it is radio mode as no menu ...no startup logo nothing at all...off to return it today

I got one, The HD picture is superb. I find that sometimes SD content is quite poor though. Is that normal with a HDTV ? Could be I'm sitting to close to the telly aswell though.
