Is this a landmark moment in ones life? I feel like it is indicative of the age I am. I've rented here for a few years, and they've gotten quite grotty looking (I may just get rid of them).

I doubt they've ever been washed and the place has been here about 12 years.

Have you ever washed net curtains?

I remember my mum spending 7 long painful weeks in hospital after trying to iron the upstairs bedroom window curtains.

I told her to take them down, or at least to close the windows first, but she knew best.

Can't spy on the neighbours if you get rid of them.

I remember when I lived in the Pit, there were net curtains on the window. We took them down one year, and soaked them in the bath, and the colour of the stuff that came out of it!

As soon as they were dry, we hung them back up again, and never touched them again.

We have blinds now. But I have washed them.

    Linen or Polyster OP?
Beat them outside first to get loose dust off.
If polyster get a bucket of warm water add one cup of vinegar and some lemon juice. Soak them wash them around a bit leave for an hour.

Then drain and add some baking soda to another bucket of water for an hour wash them round again (use gloves). If there are any stains left make a paste from baking soda and a little water and rub it in (make sure to use gloves).

If they are linen skip the vinegar bit and go straight to the baking soda.

I haven't a breeze, I ****ed them in the tub with some vanish, water was like dark urine before I'd finished filling the tub.

I may just throw them out, don't think they add much value. I thought maybe they were helping to keep the rooms darker when the curtains were drawn but I imagine not. :o

    Thanks for the help!

Use the bath if you have one or block the shower tray if you can, fill with a few inches of warm water and throw in a couple of caps NOT cups of mild bleach, mix it in the water and lay the net curtians in. Leave for several hours, rinse the nets and pull the plug. Wring them out and dry.

Do I have to take them down or can I just throw all those ingredients at the curtains in situ ?

Net curtains? Where are you living, 1922?

I wash the blinds in the washing machine, roll them all up and put them in a pillow case, do it about every six months or so.

    No probs :-)

That is the 'pretreatment' really...you can put them in the washing machine then. Sometimes my mother just dried them after the pretreatment it was enough. It depends really. I think she used to put something in the washing machine with them...I can't remember.

I once bought pink and purple ones. Or no I bought the pink and purple netting and made them into curtains.

That would be fine if you are washing them every six months not so much build up. But most people don't.

You joke but I actually do know a lady who fell out the window hoovering the curtains. It was one of them floor level old type windows, broke both legs and both arms.

Indeed it is a watershed moment. Next comes the mid-life crisis.

Just wash them twice on delicate cycle or use prewash. You can add some soda as was said above.

    What does the soda do?

Whitens, freshens, and softens fabrics. You can add 1/2 cup of soda along with your regular laundry detergent. And it's good for your washing machine as well.
Here I googled that for you http://www.dri-pak.co.uk/soda-crystals-for-laundry.html#.VWTkq9J19dw

Meant to be good for acid reflux as well.

Just fold them carefully and put them in the washing machine on the curtains setting. I just use ordinary detergent, fabric softener and sometimes I'll add a pack of curtain whitener. Hang them back up as soon as they come out of the machine and they'll hang better. As for throwing them out, it depends on how big the windows are. The general rule is that you buy curtains twice the width of the window and if you've a lot of curtain to buy it can be very expensive.

I reckon a survey on how many NO voters in De Ghey referendum own net curtains would be very very interesting.
