I really hope its not true as well, and as said, just a bad joke. Its beginning to appear on twitter now :(

    Edit: confirmed

    Farewell Bill, rest in peace,

Many of my favourite childhood sporting memories involve you, Italia 90, 94, etc.

You patience to put up with Eamon Dunphy was phenomenal, loved your approach to sport and commentary,

    Sleep well.

Hopefully he'll live many a long year from now

But when he does shuffle off this mortal coil, will the priest be able to resist intoning "we'll leave it there so" as they lower the coffin?

Where you getting these reports from?

Best not to report rumours in fairness.

Just spoke to a buddy of mine who is a sports journalist...they have heard nothing.

Agreed. Can see nothing else online suggesting it, so don't think this is a good idea.

The man will have family. If it's not true, imagine how they will feel reading this, and the panic it will cause. If it is true, they may not be notified, especially since nothing has been reported yet, so again imagine how they would feel finding out via boards...

    MOD NOTE
I've closed this thread as this is speculation. If anything changes, the thread can be re-opened.

Yep, there was this reply to the guy whose tweet joe.ie reported based on

RIP Bill. I didn't immediately recognise his name, but once I googled him how could I not recognise his face.

Such a huge part of Irish broadcasting for so long, a true legend.

Wow, that sad news. A legendary presenter who loved sport and debate. Cool, calm and a master at being able to steer Dunphy and Giles into a heated argument while Bill smirks away to himself.

    RIP Bill

Terrible news. its a shame i always notice people die so shortly after they retire. Maybe it was the job that was keeping them going.

Himself, Giles, Dunphy and Brady were great together.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88 ✭✭No_Comply

    Very sad.

For me, Bill is like Arnold Schwarzenegger - you never want them to age. You always want them to stay in their prime doing what they do best.

For Bill, it was bringing levity to often heated debates and getting the best out of the panel. Just generally being the best sports presenter I've ever had the pleasure to watch.

    A genuinely nice man.

So sad, I noticed during the last World Cup just how much better than the others he is. Can't believe he died within a year of that and his retirement. RIP

A man of integrity. Will forever be remembered for his personality, charisma and his presenting, particularly of the world cups throughout the decades. A daily mass goer, which probably helped him when it came to calming storms in the studio.
He came across as a very nice and decent person. He will be missed.
    Rest in peace.

RIP. Always enjoyed watching the world cup on RTE with him commentating on it :(

This is terribly sad. The way he could play Dunphy, Giles and Brady off each other was genius, and he truly was the greatest sports presenter we ever had.

    RIP
