It's unfortunate, as a very small number of votes would have put it over the edge.

I don't think you'll be vilified, don't worry but I'd say much like Cork North West (which voted against divorce by a narrow margin too) you'll be shorthand for conservatives for quite a while.

Main thing is the national vote carried very comfortably.

Take a look through various tweets and facebook posts, it had started as soon as results were starting to become apparent. Marian Keys tried to play her tweet off as "humour"gone wrong.

I treated gay people as equals before it was cool to do so.

It's not "cool" for most people, it's just they way it is. I grew up with gay people in my life throughout the seventies, eighties and nineties. My parents friends were gay, their kids were my friends and I had gay friends and family growing up. This "new liberal" phrase you've coined up is bizarre. Sounds like you voted no just to be different and edgy. There's nothing "fashionable" about equal rights. In fact you should leave fashion out of it when it comes to these decisions that are life changing for people.
Marriage isn't the only thing gay people need

You believe that Marriage equality is needed, but you voted no as some sort of misguided protest?

I heard a rumour that Elton John was supposed to be playing a concert in Roscommon over the summer but i guess that won'tbe happening now. Although i have heard based on the results that a new version of the movie deliverance will be shot there over the coming weeks. Every silver lining and all that.

My maths is very much open to correction, but I think the Roscommon no vote made up just under 3% of the national no vote.
    Get over it.

Your parents friends were gay and you were friends with their kids. Their surrogate kids.

In the 70's, when everyone else who was openly gay was being beaten up and ostracised.

    BS.

Yeah I bet your were as gay as Christmas (now that it's in fashion).

It's not BS! Do you think gay people arrived on Ireland's shores in the 90's when you first met a gay person? My parents had gay friends. They were openly gay amongst their friends and peers. They had kids, I played with their kids, I'm still in contact with one of them, what's so mad about that?

Sorry? You bet I was gay now? I'm guessing you were drunk when you typed this out and it made perfect sense. Funny to see the prejudice leaking out accusing me of being gay like it's a bad thing!

Still amused at you think it's a fashion. ;)

You do know you're no vote was defeated? Gay men and gay women can get married in Roscommon, and they will.

It was a country wide decision. The whole country has gone pure common sense.

You're the one on the internet with the artificial vagina masturbation device.

I dont think therell be many gay fellas getting married in ros,

They should run a special offer in the abbey hotel, have your wedding reception in the only county to reject gay marriage.

Are you for real.......give it a month and ask people can they remember what constituency voted no for SSM and you wont get many right answers.....there probably wont be many people who even remember there was a referendum

People will remember. They always do, why would they forget there was a referendum? They remember the divorce referendum. Also, it will be on reeling in the years.

    For ever. :)

People will remember. At the time of the result people were constantly referring to Roscommon. And not in a positive light. Sadly, it simply reinforced a view that Roscommon is backward and became a bit of a Running joke. Met and know lots of rossies and they are the soundest, most genuine people you'd meet anywhere.
I think what happened was the Yes Equality campaign overlooked Roscommon as there is no large urban centre (over 10k people). If more resources and effort had been put in, it likely have been different. There was a huge canvess done in most parts of the country too.

I heard co longford singly voted no but as it's in with Westmeath, overall it was a Yes. Same possibly with co Monaghan I think.

Nonsense. You'd swear the "No" votes won a landslide victory. There were plenty of other constituencies that were low 50%'s V high 40% narrow margins wins for the "Yes" side.

Why is it nonsense? Roscommon voted No, end of! I've pointed out other places where the yes vote was marginal and counties where it was No so I've already made the same point as you.

    What referendum?

Smacks of condescension - "if the Yes campaign paid more attention to the un-urbanised then the would have voted the right way"

The "I know a lot of sound Rossies" is just pointless. I know plenty of Rossies that are the opposite but it doesn't add anything to the results.
You're mixing up counties and constituencies for some bizarre reason also.

No point highlighting Roscommon when Dublin consituencies with far greater populations laso had a high percentage of Nos.
No point imagining every person you meet in D4 was in favour
