Ad slowing down site

I am using the touch site, I understand the need for adverts on the site but there is one advert with the cork hurler and something about muscles, it is a video advert and it slows down my scrolling through the site to a very frustrating level. It almost makes the page unresponsive. Anyway to avoid this advert?

The ads have become way more touch sensitive too and I keep accidentally clicking on them. I assume they increased the sensitivity to get more clicks and revenue.
It's a bit annoying, especially as some of the ads are dubious in nature.

It's getting to the stage where you have to say, how many ads are too many?

Touch site is becoming unusable with the constant video ads. Tired of it now.

Same here. Hate to have to block them on this site but had no choice, decent internet is non existent where I am, couldn't load them either way.

It'll probably get worse with the two new Ad types rolling out next week aswell.

I see skimlinks uses Java, I've that turned off while on Boards, had to to stop the whole site crashing on the phone, was trouble shooting that for a long time and never noticed it only happened here. Thread on it in Site Dev, no proper response on it in over a month though.

Could see the whole lot (Ads) get blocked at the carrier level before years out, EU Mobile Operators are looking at installing Ad Blocking Tech developed by an Israeli Company thats backed by the same fella that owns 3 here, supposedly to put a bit of manners on Google. It'll definitely put less strain on their networks but I'm not sure they've thought it true...website funding wise. I'm curious to see how it goes.

Mobile carriers in Europe will reportedly block ads in effort to bully Google

I must have clicked on the plus500 add about 50 times this month.

It's a bloody annoyance. Even if I had the money there is no way I would be interested in it.

They don't care look at the lack of responses in any threads either here or site dev about it. These forums used to be about the users not any more!

I initially put it down to being busy with the site reorg and probably still are, but an acknowledgement would have been mannerly.

This ad is so annoying, you only have to look at it for it to open

On iPhone 5 using iOS 8.3 and Chrome.
That ad freezes my phone for around 20 seconds and seems to be running at a really low fps.

It was acknowledged with a dismissive 'I'll get back to you' in one of the other threads, and I think that was 5months ago so if they were going to do anything further about it that's plenty of time. It's clearly a deliberate move given how all the complaints are being ignored.

I'm talking to our ad manager today about the video type ads that are slowing the page from loading. Will get back here when there is something to report. Thanks for your patience :)

Thread on it in Site Dev, no proper response on it in over a month though.

This seems like a recurring theme..

edit: site development - last 45 days:

Threads that have an employee response: 14
Threads that do not require an employee response (resolved, etc): 12
Threads awaiting a resolution/in need of employee response: 21

Cool but what about the ads being way more touch sensitive now? Keep getting redirected accidentally.

That's not, to my knowledge (but I will check), a thing - I don't believe there's a setting for "touch sensitivity" that we have any sort of control over. Longer presses on the screen as you swipe would probably prevent it.

I think the sensitivity is more in reference to the ad's total width as a percentage of total device width - since they're quite wide they occupy much of the ideal swipe scrolling area, and their large height means having to go out of your way on your screen to avoid them, or just hitting them out of reflex while trying to scroll more.

That Plus500 ad should be blocked shortly. If anyone comes across the other one with the hurler (I think it's for Avonmore) please screenshot it and get the click through URL and we'll nab that one too. I've been keeping an eye out for it but no luck yesterday or today. Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,203 ✭✭✭shanec1928

Or just get rid of all the huge ads in the middle of threads and go back to how it was with the smaller ones not taking up as much screen space. When the add is taking up roughly quarter the screen size on a 6+ I can only imagine what it's like for someone on a smaller screened phone.

The problem seems to be video ads full stop.
One of the great things about this site was that even on a G network connection you could load boards on your phone. I presume boards has just sold advertising to a 3rd party and these ads are part of what comes through.
The still image ads in my opinion are much more effective and a lot less annoying.

Yep, removing the ad doesn't address the problem. Before the Plus 500 ad there was one for a casino which was always cropping up, and even now the Plus 500 one has been replaced by one for 'boldchat' a lot of the time. It's the space/sensitivity that's the problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,748 ✭✭✭Pelvis Parsley

And surprise surprise, the 500 ad is here again :/

    Here to post same thing.

I didn't click the fecking thing but still I was redirected to their site.

Can I block ads off an iPhone?

Plus500 ad above your post at this minute, michael.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,840 ✭✭✭Dav

No, they're Google ads. We have strict limitations about the types of ads we run, but there are 2 problems: 1) dickhead advertisers who deliberately mislabel their ads so they appear on site's that have specifically denied that sort of content and 2) Google gives absolutely zero fks about the sites serving the content and only care about taking more money in so never take action against the people who keep abusing the service.

In case it's not obvious, this stuff makes me furious because it's us that has to deal with it and it's our members who have to suffer their incompetence. Google is one of the biggest companies on the planet, they could fix this practically overnight if they wanted to.

Is it the case that Google is the best of a bad bunch, then? I would have thought (obviously from a completely ignorant perspective) that there are alternatives to Google. I presume they range from not any better to a whole lot worse?

So my browser came to a halt when refreshing a page just now. Guess what, the bloody Plus 500 ad again.

I thought my phone was goosed. "Swipe down to scroll multiple times, insane lag, make cup of tea, more lag, then ALL THE INPUTS!"

Cleared my cache and cleaned the phone before I copped on it was in boards end.

Edit - oh and my capital is at risk again. Welcome back Plus500

    OK, here's the thing.

The next time people say "get an ad blocker" in response to any issues we have with advertising and display ads, I'm banning them from whatever forum they're saying it in, ok? Those ads pay my wages and the wages of my colleagues. To come along to our place of work and actively campaign against our ability to pay our bills, our rent, put food on our tables, etc is way out of order.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,981 ✭✭✭KomradeBishop

Apologies - in this case it was not suggested to campaign for any of the above, but to solve a usability problem caused by the sites lack of control over ads - and only for users experiencing that problem.

I have no problem with adds. I know websites need them for income. But it's annoying to be scrolling through threads and accidentally clicking on them. Could you not move adds to the bottom of the page as its a joke ATM.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,840 ✭✭✭Dav

The location of the ads is a factor in how they work. If we put them all at the bottom of the page, they'd only be worth a fraction of what we currently get.

can something be done with the size of them.. up until recreantly the ads in the middle of threads were small and non intrusive now they are big taking up nearly half the screen depending on what pone you are on and animated making it hard to scroll by without going into it.

    They're ads not adds /pedant

I sympathize with the office, this issue comes up pretty frequently. You stamp out one set of obnoxious ads (the autoplaying video ones. Kill them all) and another will take its place; some will be pinged as false positives by internet security and others will as mentioned, seize up the functionality of an entire page. Is it feasible to create a Report Ad function, wherein a report button is installed around each advertisement frame so data can be directly collected about the time, place, and content of a problematic ad?

The smaller ads that were there before are no longer an option because they make zero money I'm afraid.

I've been giving some thought to this to. It's a pain in the arse to have to be facing this though since every fracking ad that Google serves has a "report" link on it, but the more you click it, the more you'll keep seeing that ad (or at least this has been my experience with that 500 ad and the numerous Russian Brides ones that keep repeating themselves for me).
