I haven't started many SNS threads in the past - but this will certainly be the last time I do it. :(:(
Coming up on the penultimate show this week, we’ll be celebrating the life of the great broadcaster, Derek Davis with some of his colleagues and friends. David McSavage will be in to tell us how he got on as a stage actor and what his plans are for the future. Three athletes, Ellen Keane, Luke Evans and Sean Baldwin, who have set their sights on gold in the Rio Paralympics, will be in to talk to Brendan. Master of Holles Street, Dr Rhona Mahony will be talking about the responsibility of running one of the busiest maternity hospitals in Ireland. Music will be performed by Donegal sisters The Henry Girls who will be singing “So Long but Not Goodbye". Tune in at 9.45pm and enjoy!!

Well we're guaranteed a lot of awkwardness during the McSavage interview.

One of my earliest memories of Derek was when he was a newsreader. There was a time when news readers would introduce the weather reports in the same way they do the sports reports. (i.e 'And here is Jean Byrne with the weather forecast etc.)

Anyway, Derek frequently used to make funny quips and there was one poor weather presenter (Joan Blackburn) who would be stitches laughing and she'd struggle to stay composed during her report.

I remember Ann Doyle mentioning in an interview a few years ago that herself and Derek used to play practical jokes on each other and how much she loved working with him.

I'm going to miss Derek a lot, I loved his accent so much, there was something very comforting/reassuring about it.

Methinks there may be the odd 'The Edge Falling Off The Stage' joke or six :D

    Evening all.

It's never a good sign when the floor manager forces the audience to laugh.

A change of clothes from Brendan?

As I said last week, there could well be a rule in Montrose that dictates that Brendan must wear a smart suit with a tie during the actual show... ;)

I think the vast majority of people would feel Derek was underrated and underused in RTÉ.

Ciana Campbell - She's a blast from the past.

Derek was only on Marian Finucane's show a few days before he passed (Aine Lawlor was sitting in for Marian) :(

Daniel was trying to enter the phone-in competition :pac:

He won't win though, as he's not from Caaark

My favourite moment in modern TV from Derek Davis would be winning celebrity banisteoir. I don't have much interest in GAA now but I remember his method of leadership was geared in so much confidence and leadership to win the championship for his winning team.

We don't know what his team would do as a memorial to Derek when his funeral comes around.

I think one of the funniest things I ever saw on tv was when Daniel and Sinead O'Connor appeared together on a celebrity 'Who wants to be a Millionaire'
    Daniel was hilarious.

I'd have bought it, he could have read the telephone book and I'd have loved it!

I have to say, I told the mammy grey about Derek passing and first thing she said.....

"he kept putting his finger in the gravy in the Calor Kosangas "wifey thing"" - she never forgave him for that!!....... :)

    A very nice gentleman RIP.....

They should bury his ashes at sea, somewhere that the fishing was good for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,585 ✭✭✭✭Lady Chatterton

There is a headstone in my local cemetery and the epitaph simply reads 'Gone Fishing'.

    Derek Davis RIP

Ciana was on RTE Radio 2FM in the early years, mostly weekend music shows is where she started...
