Has anyone completed the application pack yet? Is it much of a hassle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 398 ✭✭IsaacWunder

Has anyone applied for the SUSI grant? I'm hopeful I'll get it based on their online application reckoner, but I'm not sure exactly how the PPC1 is categorised.

As for payments, I presume it's monthly, but if it was a lump sum it would be better for paying off student loans.

Application pack isn't too bad. As for the grant I think the PPC is categorised as a level 9 course, not too sure about that though. I'm ineligible to apply as I've a masters but its not in law.

Thanks. Its level nine, but I'm not sure if it's a diploma, or what, exactly.

Where do you get the application pack? I was just waiting for the law society to send out details of how to apply?

I emailed them. Sent out that day

Email Law Society they will post you the pack. It's quite detailed and requires character references, copy of degree. FE results etc. So can take a while to fill out if you don't have the documentation already handy. I'm filling it out at the moment - do you need to provide your leaving/junior results or is it just outline the school in the education record?

The grant is level 9 so if you have a masters already your not eligible unless that masters is in law. If you have a law masters you can apply.

Pretty standard. You would have similar requirements with any postgraduate degree admissions.

The character reference is just that; don't go out hunting down old employers or school principals. I got 2 friends to write mine.

Not when you're applying to do the postgraduate course in the same place you did your undergrad.

The fact that they award the grades for the FE1s, but you have to tell them what you got does not inspire confidence.

You would certainly still have to give your results, you just wouldn't need to provide a certified copy, which is not being required here. For instance, I've recently been accepted onto a doctoral programme in the university that I attended as an undergrad. I was required to give my grades but not degree cert from undergrad. Then I had to provide copies of my degree cert from my masters which was abroad and details of my call to the Bar in another jurisdiction. Blackhall seems to be on par with this.

Nope and the college results/degree has to be a certified copy to be signed and stamped by a solicitor. I suppose it's the traineeship section dealing with the applications rather the the FE-1 section, so I suppose it is easier for them to ask us to give a copy of the results than have to cross reference elsewhere.

Feck. Better get cracking on the application...

When do applications have to be in by?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 188 ✭✭sorchauna

When do applications have to be in by?

If before 1st July and it's €840. If it's after 1st July they charge an extra fee of €50 so it's €890.

Anyone starting Blackhall this September and have to pay the fees themselves and won't have a salary until they start in the office post PPC1?

How are you managing? Loan from family/bank?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭CRM1

Yeah I'm in that boat - a few loans. Fees are a joke and they should at least have some sort of a staggered payment system. I can't wait another year to get the ball rolling so will just have to jump in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 ludalyni

Do the FE1 results from the March/April sitting come out in time for a trainee to start in Blackhall that same April, or would you have to wait until the following September or even April of the following year?

PPC1 starts in September of each year so you'll have your results from the March/April FE1 sitting by then.

I'll be travelling up to from Laois Carlow area for PPC 1, has anyone else any experience in doing this? Is PPC1 usually five days a week?

I was thinking of commuting from Sligo area but I think it would be too arduous, and a few of the people in my office said lectures can be on 5 days a week.

Anyone easygoing and friendly who is moving up from the country want to try and get a house for the 7 months of PPC 1?

    PM me if your interested!

Yeah it's pretty hectic 5 day a week schedule - I think there's a timetable up from 2013 or 2014 in the trainee section of the Law Society website. As for the accommodation - that's a great idea - i'd be up for that. Dreading starting the search!!

I'm going to stay with relatives and travel from Carlow... that doable? I will be car sharing a lot of the days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 230 ✭✭Inmyownworld

Jesus! Copy of degree and fe1 results? Are you kidding?

I just sent them the last letter I got from them stating that I was deemed to have passed the FE1's, I didn't send them a letter with all my results in it.

That was enough, I got a reply saying I have a place anyways!

The grant only is to cover the fees, as its a postgrad course you won't get a maintenance grant. The grant money goes directly to the law Society and they will refund the amount to whoever paid the fees if the fees are already paid.

    Hi Guys,

Heading to Blackhall in September and just looking into the whole accommodation lark!

Any suggestions? or better still does any body fancy organising a house share?

    Thanks Guys.

Still havnt finished the application.. Hoping to have it in by Friday.. Have many people already submitted it already? Do you think it is likely it would be full already or will I be ok just having it in before the deadline?

    Thanks

As far as I know they rarely ever fill up, and they will take applications right up until the start date. Obviously the sooner it's in the better. I had an interview with a firm last year and it was around 2 weeks before PPC1 was to start and they wanted the successful candidate to go into Blackhall 2 weeks later, I asked them would they still accept people and they said they would. So I wouldn't worry.

I'm hoping to get my application in by the end of the week.

As long as you can come up with the cash the Law Soc will find a place for you.

They have informed you that you have your place already? I got confirmation that they have received my application and they will be back to me within the next 6 weeks!? Also mentioned something about maybe having to be called for an interview in order to discuss your application!

I'm the same, most likely will be commuting from Carlow, the Irish Rail monthly student ticket works out ok, €246 approx, and then parking at train station and luas on top of that. Very doable.

Yeah I got that letter and I think within a week or 2 I got another letter giving consent to enter into Indentures and a Form 3 and 4 to fill out.

I'd say you'll hear back quick enough. It's probably rare anyone gets called for an interview.

Has anyone received their registered Indentures back yet? I know they said 4-6 weeks but i'm on week 7 now. Just working out whether or not I need to call them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭chops018

I only sent mine a week and a half ago. But I am hoping they get back to me within the 2 weeks as I don't want to hand my notice into my current job without the confirmation that I have a place.

I know there's only a very slight chance I won't get confirmation as I sent them everything required but just incase!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 230 ✭✭Inmyownworld

Yeah, I still haven't gotten Indentures back or the Registration Pack yet.

Hopefully this week. Still waiting to hear for sure if I've gotten the SUSI Grant too, so much waiting!

Wondering whether to bother applying for the grant, a few questions?

1 I see the deadline is August 1st. Would you get the application done in a day?
    2. Is there a lot of follow up work for the application or what do you have to have ready?
    3. I have a Masters in law so how do you actually go about applying? I.e. you can only apply if you're progressing, so how do you do that?

Not even sure I would be eligible but it might be work applying to chance it!

    Any info appreciated.

    Apply Apply Apply

It takes weeks for them to look at it - Suzi are useless. You might get a reply by Sept

you do it all online. shud take about 30 mins. If your approved they ask for proof of what you claimed in the online application. So worth applying anyway.

I have masters too but its deemed a stand alone course so your entitled to apply for it.

Does any one know what the story is with time off?? I see on past timetables about compulsory lectures but what about the rest? Obviously, I presume your supposed to be in attendance at all times but is it possible to miss the odd day for a wedding ect??
