No run today as I was on supporter duty this morning for the better half doing the Simon 5mile.

Will head out in the morning and get 20 done. Hopefully herself will be up to join me on the bike..

Hi all, I'm new here and also a first time DCM'er and wanted to say that this really is a super forum and well done to all contributing and the mentors. It's been so informative and inspiring reading back through some of your recent posts. I had an aborted attempt at DCM last year and pulled out of training after the HM with a really bad quad strain that was painful to walk with nevermind run. It's probably a bit late to be hopping on board at this stage but here I am. ;)

Really chuffed for all of you hitting your 20 miles! That's brilliant work! Fist bumps all around!

I've my last longest LSR tomorrow, 18 miles. Going to study for a bit tonight then head for bed early. I've been running so well lately I'm almost afraid to be confident about tomorrow for fear Murphy's law will kick in! Really going to try for a more consistent run to make up for the bad pacing last week. As DG says though, I'm glad to have learned the lesson sooner rather than later!

Oh, and my cold is nearly gone so should be grand for tomorrow. Very little coughing (one cough like every other hour) and congestion has cleared up. I'm thankful it wasn't a worse dose and that it's out of the way now!

Will post an LSR report tomorrow.

In other news, I moved my last sport massage appointment to the 15th instead of the Friday before the marathon. After reading DG's post about when to book I thought that it will be more beneficial to me after my last long-ish LSR. I still have a full mid-week of running and a 15 miler next week so I think the timing is better.

So anyway, see you guys tomorrow!

Well as we are on a roll....Did my 32km LSR this afternoon. Normally like to get them out of the way in the morning but couldn't as I had my daughters birthday party. Pre run food probably wasnt great......this morning 2 pancakes, lunch 1 pancake with a bit of fruit. Another half a banana before I left.

Aim was 6min/km but decided to throw in 1km at PMP of around 5:30 after every 5 so that broke it up a bit. Also did a route that brought me back by the house at 19km so had a very quick pit stop for some water and the other half banana. Had some gels with me but didnt bother using them.

Actually felt great - my niggles in the knee and hamstring were barely noticeable and my legs only felt heavyish on the last 2km. The weather made a big difference - no sun and a little bit cool.

All in 32km in 3:09 so 5:55/km (or 9:30/mile). Very happy with that.

Finally made it to the physio today. Said my problems with my knee are IT band problems. Gave a massage (sore) and some strengthening stretches to do. I am due a 20mile run tomorrow but he advised against it. He advised doing about 10-12km tomorrow and attempt 20mile next week and then start the taper. Going to him again midweek after I try some more runs so hopefully my knee will have improved.

20m done today, feels good typing that! It went really well and I'm pleased to have passed this milestone, great confidence injection.
I always run on my own, and I become quite selfish, always focused on how I'm doing but for the first time today I found myself thinking of all the other novices doing their lsr today and how they're getting on, felt good to be part of something bigger.
    Full report later
Well done everyone and good luck tomorrow for those running Sunday

Have you tried foam rolling your ITB? Might do the trick, cheaper way of getting the same pain !

No I don't have one although I am calling over to my brothers tomorrow who does have one so I might 'borrow' it until after the marathon. Are they good yeah ?

My 'knee' problems are actually IT band problems aswell. I eased up on my distance for a few weeks, lots of stretching and foam rolling session aswell. Unfortunately I saw little enough improvement even with physio sessions. The most improvement actually came after I concentrated on strengthening sessions in the gym (those seated squat machines, leg flexors etc with lightish weights).

Here's hoping and thanks again for all your help and advice at the HM.

Final long LSR done. Splits were pretty consistent if a little fast in the middle where I really needed to pee and was HingTFU to get to a bathroom.

The camaraderie on the route this morning was amazing. Was joined at one stage or another by 3 faster runners who all slowed down for a chat and to wish me luck. Finally got a big smile from a guy in a HM top (I was wearing mine too) with about a mile to go and it really spurred me on.

Home now and demolished a banana, a protein shake made with chocolate MooJu, smoked mackerel, scrambled egg and hot sauce and a cereal bar. Good job there was no one home to see that :o

Well done C hope that choc milk and mackerel was all seperate !!! So jealous you're fin 22 for me tomorrow that will be my longest done then. Roll on this time tomorrow :)

Last long, long LSR done today. Had to give myself a bit of a kick in the arse to get out the door but was delighted I did. This morning for the first time, I was getting kind of sick of the idea of the long run. I only took up running properly last September and it has been very beneficial for me. Great for my fitness, health, brain and de-stressor from real life. I've always liked getting up and going and have rarely been hesitant about it but today I was genuinely reluctant to go. I don't think I've ever practised for something for so long and not actually done it. Doing most of the Connemarathon training and then getting injured didn't help I suppose. The thought of going for another 20 mile run at a slow steady pace just really got to me this morning for some reason. Just can't wait to get to the start line for DCM now.

I ran alone from just outside Carlow Town to Goresbridge in Kilkenny. The drop in temperature was great and made things a little more comfortable. I ran the River Barrow trail again which is the job. I left at 11am which was way later than normal so was hungrier when running as a result. I ended up taking gels at miles 6,11,15 and 19. I've never taken as many but felt that they actually made a difference today. I plan on taking four for DCM as well at slightly different stages. Stomach was fine after them. I had to make a pit-stop in Bagnelstown to buy some vaseline as the inside of my arms were chaffing very badly from my running top. I've always run with that top and it hasn't happened before so not sure what the story was this morning. I'm going to do DCM in a singlet so shouldn't have that problem on the day. Might bodyglide/vaseline up just in case.

Flagged a bit at times and had to keep the head demons at bay. I had a small running backpack for my drinks and gels and had to stop to take them. Getting going again became harder towards the end. It was fine once I'd found my rhythm but the first few hundred metres I felt like someone drunk-running for the last bus home. My OH and smallie were waiting in Goresbridge and we went for lovely lunch in St. Mullins and a stroll by the river. Lovely day all around.

Average pace - 8.44 minutes per mile. Last three miles were my fastest. Couldn't wait to get some food into me!

Well done on all the runs and some very good reports. Have a tapertastic week.

    Mark

Most people haven't a clue what a good time is or isn't, I reckon you could say your time was 3.30 or 4.30 and you'd get the same "jeez, fair play". But its all good natured

You shouldn't foam roll on your ITB. It's a ligament not a muscle so you will only bruise it.
What you should do is Foam roll your quads and TFL muscle (between hip bone and pelvis) as tightness in those muscles can cause the ITB to tighten.
If Myles spitz is watching I ams ure he will give a more detailed reasoning on this.

I moved my legs for three hours, I think they're going to fall off now. Ohmigod.

At one point towards the end of my lsr today I looked down at my feet and found that despite all the thoughts going through my head my legs just kept on going! It was remarkable, the constant striding didn't seem to mirror the difficulty my brain was processing
    Just keep on truckin'

    Hi guys,
Great LSR reports, really good running today, I think that the weather being a bit cooler probably helped all of us today!

    NUNN TABLETS ARE FANTASTIC !!

Just thought that I'd mention that as I tried them with water for the first time today instead of Lucozade sport. They were a bit easier on the stomach and seem to compliment the Gels a bit more too (IMO). I tried the tropical flavour (non caff) and also tried a packet of SHOT BLOKS (Jelly sweets) and I did my 32K LSR (3:15 ish) and felt really good throughout...last 2K were a bit tough but manageable.

Going to make a switch to Nunn tablets and water as they are very easy to carry and pop into my water.....might give the Shot Bloks a go too as they were very easy to chew and swallow.

Had a hot shower, followed by putting the cold shower head on to my legs for a few minutes to cool down the tired muscles (lots of swearing too), stretched a bit today and then had a warm bath with Epson Salts and Radox this evening....... legs feel ok now;).

Top tip on Gels from my physio: He says to swallow them in at least 3-4 goes, as when we gulp them down, we are more likely to get cramps, I did this today and it worked for me anyway.

I am on the Irish Runner/Dave Carrie plan, so still one more LSR for me next week.....aawww:( Plan to eat my body weight in chocolate eclair sweets tonite as I am starving......yeaaaa!! :D:D:D

Hi Dubgal and co., havent had much to say in the last week. Didnt run since last Sundays long run to give the sore knees time to recover, saw a physio and when that came to nothing I went for a rub down which also came to nothin. Went for a real easy jog this evening to see could I get past 5k without a prob, 1 mile into it and the two knees at the exact same time began to hurt.

So I said F this and upped the pace and ran 7 miles more coz I'm phecked if I'm gonna do zero mileage with my 1st marathon around the corner. Pain dulls after mile 6 just like in last weeks LSR. Now at home on the ice.

Dont know what the plan is, I need to do miles, and I need to do a long run or two still. Going to go day by day, I'm not the only one with issues, in fact I think that having read this thread over the last few months and how folks are struggling on with their own injuries determined to achieve their goal, is what made me enter just 20 minutes before the entry window closed. Haha I even entered in wave 1, aim to start at the rear....

Longest lsr today, 22 miles, felt every bit of it! Went well enough though, last two miles were a bit rough but there were a series of tough hills just before that point.

Took two gels, bottle of lucozade sport and some jelly babies, a little too much sugar really, just a tad too much.

Changed runners on Monday and after 12 miles in Tuesday my left foot was a bit blistered. Was worried about impact of today, but had plasters and Vaseline on it and it was grand. This might seem odd, but I think the new runners have me running a bit faster. Got gait analysis done and the same amount of effort seems to have me moving maybe 20 secs a mile quicker, weird.

Was up for most of last night due to work and wasn't expecting much from today but am happy enough with everything.

Peak week over now, am going to have to watch what I eat a bit more now, was eating all before me for the last fortnight!

Really happy I signed up for marathon now, probably never been as fit, would be very hard to motivate yourself to exercise like this for any other goal.

Lots to take on board but all good advice! Thank you!

I've been running past the zoo so often, I think I'll make plans to stroll up during taper time and actually go in to see the animals! Anyone fancy joining me? :p

    You mean to say ...

    ... it's tapir time?

    I'll show myself out.

Just a thought, would your gait ever change?? I mean, as you train for a marathon you burn fat and build muscle, so would that change your gait?

I guess it can, but more so form would change. I suffered from ITBS last year too, found that running faster was less painful. Faster generally equals better form, too easy to slouch a bit when plodding along slowly. Try pushing hips forward to relieve ITB pain on the run.

Strengthening wise - bridges, single leg squats, single leg bridges sorted it out for me last year.

Absolutely. As you get stronger and your body composition changes it would be normal for your gait to change a little.

After the usual breakfast ritual which now includes an imodium (scarlet) I set out on my 20 mile run at 9.30 yesterday morning. Weather was perfect for it. Planned to do 10 around town and then head out into the country for the other 10 this worked well it broke the run up nicely. Nice slow pace throughout I had two gels and some jelly baby's. I had one bottle of water and a bottle with a high 5 energy drink tablet in it. At 12 miles met some girls I know also out on there lsr. I ran with them for a few miles but there pace was far to quick for me so we parted ways as I had more miles done at that stage than them. I enjoyed the chat and it made the rest of the run fly by. I felt I finished strong and really enjoyed the run. I was on a high all day yesterday. I can't wait for the big day now. Well done to all who did there long run yesterday and the very best of luck to anyone doing it today.
