Was it easier for guys to meet girls back in the old days eg 1960's,70's. ??

For a single guy today it's near impossible to find a girlfriend eg tinder, good looking east European guys etc.

I'm 25 now fed up of the single life

Of course it wasn't easier. You have to put in the effort.

It was much easier back in the day.

The sound of a minimally talented showband used to turn even the most respectable girl into a raving nymphomaniac.

Statistically speaking 99.9% of all Irish people born in the 60s and 70s were conceived in the back seat of a car outside the local dance hall.

As the Irish branch of the human race hasn't died out yet, I'd hazard a guess it's always been relatively easy to meet members of thew opposite sex.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,172 ✭✭✭Mister Vain

In theory it should be easier because there are more options now. The interweb is a bit of a double edged sword though. Yeah you have tinder and facebok and the like, but people spend too much time online now. I think social media has ruined the nightlife too because people spend more time recording the moment than actually living it. It's hard to approach someone when they're glued to their smartphone. In the old days it just seemed to be more simple and most people found someone and got married. People generally stay single til they're older now, and not always by choice.

Wow. What a silly thing to complain about. If you think Tinder and Eastern European guys are affecting your ability to find a partner then you're most certainly doing it wrong. If anything, Tinder should aid you in this prospect. And as others have suggested, you should just hand over your man card.

Do people actually use Facebook as a dating site?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,172 ✭✭✭Mister Vain

Yeah I'm not sure what Eastern European guys has to do with anything? You don't see many Eastern European guys with Irish women. It's usually the Irish men dating the Eastern European women.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 937 ✭✭✭swimming in a sea

I'd say your problem is you have your eye on the top self ladies, well if you don't have the looks or the €€€€ you have no chance so you may have to go the bargain section.

No, in fact I would say its quite easier these days to find a girlfriend if that is what you want. There is many more opportunities today to meet women that wouldn't have been there decades ago, when women might have been married at an earlier age etc.

Women aren't all the same, looks aren't the be all and end all. If you have a good personality and are fun to be around then eventually you will find someone you like and likes you. Make sure you don't come on to strong and seem desperate whatever you do, nothing turns women off more than desperation.

It's a lot easier to get sex nowadays because people are more sexually liberated these days as the Catholic church doesn't have as much influence as it one had. Escort Ireland has helped in that regard too. But actually finding someone special to settle down with is a lot harder now I reckon.

There was a survey published last week saying that the current and future generations have little in the way of social skills in dealing with real women, it's a specific form of shyness.

Deadly serious, true story and all that. One of the reasons is due to the amount of on-line porn they watch so have don't have the mad skills us oldies have in talking to the ladies.

I don't think its harder to find someone to settle down with to be honest. Any of my friends age group of 25-27 have found girlfriends when they want one without to much of a bother.

Before smartphones people just dreamt up other reasons why they shouldn't approach, it's basically the same.

It really isn't. Nightclubs used to be simple places. They were just music, beer, women, that's it. Now they're glorified photo studios where people stand around posing for facebook photos.

I dunno, walking up to a women with you hand down your tracker knackers tucked into your white socks doesn't charm the women you should want to charm.

Haha, that's a social stereo type. I've never had anyone described as such approach me.

Well, back in the day you'd talk to your local matchmaker, generally paying a fee of a goat or three chickens and a six-pack of porter. She'd organize a match, who you would meet once at the local hop, naturally chaperoned by the parish priest. Now if the priest liked the look of you both, you'd get married next and have a baba on the way nine months later (if less than nine months, no one would say anything to your face, but you could be sure that auntie Brigid would never invite you to visit again), with another one every 10 to 16 months thereafter until yer wife hit her menopause or her uterus fell out - whichever happened first.

It became a lot harder with the advent of the Celtic Tiger. People started having these career yokes, and so they'd end up in the pub less often. A decrease in romance was inevitable, as, sure, how are you supposed to feel romantic without a couple of drinks in you - or her, so she can block out the voice of old sister Assumpta in her head, telling her how what she was doing was vile, dirty and a sin. Men were luckier as priests said very different things to us when we were boys and alone in the confessional.

Alcohol has been the backbone of Irish romance for centuries. How else could the ginger gene have persisted, when it's gone extinct in almost every culture that's been forced to court stone cold sober. Sure, one in two Arabs were gingers at the time of Mohammad.

Increases in marital breakups, HIV, unmarried mothers and gahy marriage can all be traced back to people spending less time in the pub. Won't someone, who isn't in the priesthood, please think of the children?

That has always been the case. It could be because the younger guys would make so much more effort to impress older women.

They have to make the extra effort, because all the younger women, their own age, are already taken by the older guys.

Tinder,POF, Instagram etc have all made the most average looking women think they are Katie Perry due to the randy nature of Irish men liking everything and anything therefore making it extremely difficult to pull birds.

    **** you Social Media :)
