Is this a cockroach?

I've managed to get through life without seeing a cockroach. I'm not good with creepy crawlies. I found my cat playing with this bug and I am lying in bed imaging the worst.

Can some tell me it's just a harmless bug?

    It's a beetle.

You will know it's a cockroache becuase you will be lying in a pool of your own blood after he's stabbed you in the neck with a douvet.

Doesn't look like a cockroach, based on my scant experience.

If it's just a beetle, I'll give it's freedom away from the cat.

Just worried I'm about to be invaded by nasty bugs - ordinary bugs are fine!

How come cockroaches are something you don't see often if ever, yet whenever a restaurant is forced to close by the health inspector, the kitchen is full of them ?

There's no cockroaches in Ireland... Well none that I've ever seen.

Good lord ..that is NOT a cockroach....It doesn't even look anything LIKE a bloody cockroach! 30 species out of 4,600 are associated with human habitats.

The common species in Ireland are blatella germanica and blatta orientalis. You can identify them pretty easily. No that is not one.

It is definitely a cockroach. German type. Look at the legs shape, length and the 'antlers'.
Uncanny similarity to the fella below.

I saw it on the ground, even the cat wasn't chasing it with the usual vigour she reserves for spiders and flying bugs, so I got worried she was smarter than me.

When you goggle 'cockroach' and try to match it to what's in front of your eyes, it's hard!

My sister when she was younger woke up one night to have a female deathwatch beetle using her blanket to lay her babys on. I think she needed years of therapy afterwards.

    Yes there are.

I've never ever seen one here. Unless they're small and can be confused with a beetle. Unlike the monsters you see in Spain, Italy or France etc.

I've seen cockroaches in Donegal, if they're here they can be anywhere. Look nothing like a beetle, don't really look like any other insect.

Rentokil tell us it costs 15000 of our euro money to rid your house of these.

Now, it seems Rentokil can find them but generally we dont see them.

    Hmmmm!

There are many species here but only two or four are really known as pests ...the two I have mentioned German Cockroach - blatella germanica Oriental Cockroach -blatta orientalis the brown banded and American...they like hot places ..your hot cupboard or the kitchen.

They don't fly but have shiny wings.

I find insects and spiders ........and the way they are categorized interesting. Terrified in real life though.

Although I am not scared of the preserved ones in the national history museum. My mom sort of jumps every time I move back the leather flaps on the casing.

I used to make drawings of them. Not great ones. Mum is more the artist.
