Can Physio Send for MRI or Only Doctor?

As the title states: can a physio send me forward for an MRI scan or can only a doctor do this? I hurt my ankle a few weeks ago, not a sprain but a sharp pain when I twist it, and it doesn't appear to be getting better. I will be going to a physio early next week, but I was wondering if he/she can send me for an MRI scan. If not I would be inclined to skip the physio and go to the doctor (if the doctor doesn't in turn send me to a physio).

I just went for one and my physio said I wouldnt be able to claim off my insurance if I didnt have a doctor's referral. So I suppose that is the sticking point.

It was this week too, so definitely not outdated information

Ye I was thinking that - might just go to the doctor so.
