So the 3rd edition has just been published... and I've passed 10,000 photographs on Flickr. As a wee celebration, I have a copy of the book here with a Boardsie golfer's name written all over it.

If you're interested, just reply to this thread... and list your favourite golf hole in the country.

    Front Cover

PS. Since the first edition we've gained 6 new 18-hole courses, and lost 16.

And if anyone wants a shot at winning a fourball... take a look at the blog

I unfortunately haven't played a huge amount of courses, so for me I'm going to have to go with the one which had me the most nervous and excited standing on the tee box, the 1st in Athlone as it was the first hole I ever played

My favourite hole in the country is the Portmarnock Golf Club Par 4 14th. A Drive towards Irelands eye that at your peril entices you to take on the bunkers on the left. Using a mid-iron, depending on wind conditions, a demanding, high flight accurate second shot to an elevated green with stop is required for a chance to hold the green. The green is defended by three deep pot bunkers at the front left & right that will cost most golfers a shot. Meanwhile there are deep run off areas to the left, right & back of the green. Then more fun starts as you try to read this treacherous green. On a sunny day, in great company, it ticks all the golf boxes I could possibly ask for.

Great Books Kevin...thank you ....Keep them coming.

Best of luck with the book Kevin. Is that the 15th in bunclody on the cover? My favourite hole is the 5th in druids glen.

Having not played a great amount of courses I'd have to go with 10th at Cobb, too similar to 17th and sawgrass not to love it (but hate it in a way cause it's so difficult :) )

    12th at Tralee

Congratulations Kevin. Bought the first edition for my Dad many moons ago so would love to be able to add a copy to my own collection.

Have played very little outside of Leinster, so missing all the beauty of links golf in that part of the world.

So will go with the 12th I'm macreddin. Great hole, really tough & sticks in my memory as saw a full grown deer bound across the fairway in front of us when we were there

Good luck with the book Kevin.

Not for everyone but I like the 10th in Dundrum. Mainly for the tee shot with 3 massive oaks bang in the middle of the fairway.

Good luck Kevin, bought 2 of the first editions, one for myself and my Dad.

I'll plumb for the 13th at The European Club.

13th Par 3 Wee Dunt really caught my eye recently in Donegal GC.
I too have a treasured much used dog eared 1st Edition of Hooked so badly need an update.
TBH the GUI should make ownership of Kev's tome mandatory for all..!

Maybe not the best hole but the best place is standing on the back tee of the par 3 17th in Waterville. Surveying the course and looking ahead to the final run in. A quick nod to John Mulchay who's ashes are there and the course architect Eddie Hackett before hitting a tee shot out over the Atlantic towards America and hoping the wind will bring you in pin high!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,003 ✭✭✭Kevinmarkham

Thanks for all the well wishes. I plan to do a little tally at the end to see which holes are the most popular.

Yep, 15th it is. Lovely hole, and so nice of a guy in a red shirt to be walking down the fairway.

Oh, you're funny! Best hole on the course... if it wasn't for 17 others

I was up there last year photographing the course. First light and I headed over to the 12th (from the 15th fairway) - there was a stag and doe standing in front of the green in perfect light. Didn't even get my camera raised before they'd bolted. I'm still gutted to have missed such an incredible shot.

Nothing wrong with those trees - a brilliant hole.

Try telling that to the K Club... or Elm Park... or Mount Temple, Dublin Mountain... and several more. Don't think they'd be best pleased at the reviews!

Played it yesterday (https://flic.kr/p/suk6QW). I had forgotten how vicious the greens could be.
I played it several years ago with friends and we got to the 17th with the match square. The girl on our opponent's side was short in 3, hit a 5 iron that bounced three times on the water and finished 2 feet from the flag. Nothing wrong with that lake if you know how to play it right.

Good to see. A fine course that most people have never heard of.

It is a hard bloody question isn't it.

So many class holes in Old Head - Great holes in Carne and Corballis and Lahinch and Royal County Down and Maccreddin and Druid Glen and European Club and even Wicklow and Portmarnock and Roses point and The Island and Strandhill and Tullamore and Portumna and Fota and Juliet.

I almost give up - but I guess , because it is more a memory - as it was the first time I ever seen anything like it. I can sit here and play the hole in my mind as if I was there. I wouldn't even say it is the best hole - but it is subjective and hard to be objective about golf holes.

I go for 13 in Enniscrone ( The Burrows ) A six iron and try hit the stone.

Have to agree with Spacecoyote the 12th macreddin a great hole for me.

My favorites are 15th at Lee Valley or the 18th in Fota Island Deer Park Course... Both very pleasing on the eye at any time or any season.

mad props to Dr. Rieux for mentioning an Athlone hole. The 1st is indeed a great and intimidating opening hole.

I'm going to pick one that hasn't been mentioned. The 9th at New Forest. Walled in on all sides, it's a great little postage stamp of a hole.

Good luck with the book Kevin :)

Oh, you're funny! Best hole on the course... if it wasn't for 17 others

    Haha ;)

Ah no in all seriousness, My vote is not for one, but 2 holes. The 3rd & 4th in Mount Juliet. They are probably far from the best holes in the country, but they are my favourite. I love the way they flow together, over the water, trees banked up on either side and leave you in complete isolation ffom the rest of the world. sheet bliss

Congrats on the new edition Kevin. Have the first edition and have just finished Driving The Green(a very enjoyable read)!

Almost impossible to name a favourite hole so will say the 18th a St Margarets because I'm biased :)

Ah it must have been well fed that day and was probably full :P

I have played it many times and still get suckered on occasions, I often wondered if Peter McEvoy knew what he was doing when he left the back of the green exposed to the wind and sheltered the players all the way right up to the lake.

I still haven't played all the courses from the first edition :)

18th in Adare for me, always think of Richard Finch as I walk up the fairway.
