If you cover the pups head it looks remarkably like a plucked chicken.

Went off there this morning fencing with the father a few mile over the road. When i came back at 1 there was calves and bulls everywhere. Found out a helicopter passed over checking ESB wires and was flying very low. Drove all the animals mad and we gave the last hour rounding them up.

has anyone ever had a bvd positive calf come back negative on a retest? Also by keeping the calf for the 3 weeks before retesting if positive would it not be shedding bvd

No experience Whelan but had a quick look on the net. Best information that I came across was here.:
    http://www.animalhealthireland.ie/page.php?id=119
    Point 18:
I have received a positive result for a strong, apparently healthy calf- is it definitely a PI?
Many PI calves can be deceptively healthy looking in early life, but will generally deteriorate as they grow older. You have an option to do a re-test three to four weeks after the initial sample was taken to clarify the calf’s status, with a positive result confirming it as PI. A negative result on a re-test is typically due to the calf having been transiently infected with BVD virus when the first sample was collected. Even when apparently healthy, PI calves represent a significant risk of infection to other animals in your and neighbouring herds and you are advised to isolate them prior to confirmatory testing and to cull them as soon as possible after confirmation of PI status. 83% of all calves that were initially tested positive in 2012 tested positive again on the confirmatory testing.

Feckit and hard luck, bloody curse of a disease
I have seen some super continental calves in the abattoir :( which is my only experience with BVD, other than getting the two calves that were born here tested this year.
Is there no vaccine that can be given to cows to prevent it passing onto calves??
I know because we have BVD in Ireland that it has negatively impacted on FR bull calf exports to Belgium which has had the knock on effect of less calves been exported.

Seen that but at least France took a few thousand extra but it didn't cover the shortfall

Why don't DAFM apply a free compulsory vaccination programme.

Something like 90% of initial positives come back negative on the second test iir my vet correctly.

I had twins results with one positive and one negative in the initial test. The negatives result was 47 and the positives was 37 where 40 is the cutoff for positive and negative. So a lot of negatives are showing a weak positive which will turn up as negative if retested.

Hopefully my twin shows up as negative:(
