Thought this deserved it's own thread

Following a meeting with UFC president Dana White, UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta and UFC COO Lawrence Epstein in Albuquerque earlier today, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has now been stripped of his UFC title and suspended indefinitely. Daniel Cormier will replace Jon Jones at UFC 187 and will fight Anthony Johnson for the light-heavyweight title.

Wow. I don't think many were expecting that?

i never thought Zuffa would have had the balls to do that, but they've done the right thing for once

Yeah, I actually think it is the right thing for the sport. I'd imagine he will be back though

Wasnt expecting them to follow through to that level of penalising him but glad they did. Its the right action to take.

UFC Tonight on in 5 minutes on Fox Sports One if anyone knows how to access it ;)

Best thing for the UFC is for AJ to beat DC. At least we can say AJ would have knocked out Jones too. If DC wins it discredits the title more than it already has.

AKA could well end the year with 4 world champions after Dana critcizing them last week.

    Cain, Rockhold, DC and Khabib?

Look on the bright side, if he ends up in Jail at least he won't be somebodies b*tch.

Wow. Awesome move. Fair play to them

Bet he won't be thanking his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for giving him the power to do all things this time...

Great decision for the UFC though.
It puts Bones back in his place and into the real world where he will hopefully cop the **** on.
It opens up the division temporarily as he was clearing it out.
In one sense it's great PR to be seen to do the right thing and strip your champion of the title, despite him being a cash cow.
And finally, if and when Jones DOES come back it's gonna be a story that writes itself.

The correct decision made. Shame that whoever becomes new champion with always have a huge * next to their name.

Had to be done especially with the big decision on getting legal in New York coming up in the next few months. Overlooking what had happened and leaving Jones as champion with all his legal troubles would only give the detractors more ammunition so correct decision.

Rumble to KO DC, Jones to come back and reclaim his belt and get KO'd also. Then we have the true LHW champ :)

    Rumble fanboy here :o

I like that move from UFC, ballsy. I would like Jones comeback fight to be against Gusstaffson in Iceland or somewhere.

I can't wait to see which HW's and MW's who coincidentally think this is the right time to move to LHW to take a run at the belt.

Good decision and it opens up the division nicely. Winner of UFC 187 fight will probably fight Gus. I think Jones will definitely be back though.

Seems to me like the UFC laid down an ultimatum after his last shenanigans and then had to follow through. He's some eejit, and I agree with their decision but part of me thinks he's also a mixed up kid with huge talent and huge problems. Hope he works it all out for his sake and his family's...

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,462 Mod ✭✭✭✭Axwell

They brought out a code of conduct after the Matt Mitrione comments about Fallon Fox so they either live by it or they don't, they went lightly on Jones last time and that was a yellow card where they probably should have went harder on him but this time they have no choice. Hes let them down and hes also im sure got plenty of warnings after last time. Its not a ballsy move as such, its the right thing to do and the only thing to do if they want to be seen in a good light. Financially it suits them anyways in the long run, Jones return and fight for the belt, maybe him and Gus fight as number 1 contenders to take it off Rumble/DC..theres plenty of options for them going forward.

I know I'll be in the minority but I don't agree with it. If he's ready to fight then let him fight, his claim to the title is chiseled in granite. Whoever wins this Cormier/Johnson fight will never be seen as the true champion until he beats Jones.

I can see the sense in it though if the fight was in jeopardy because of legal distractions, the show must go on. But if he was in a position to train and fight and deal with the legal stuff after, I'd much prefer if they'd have done it that way.

Can understand what you mean but I would assume one of the stipulations of Jones been out on bail is that he can't leave the state, could be completely wrong tho.

It does sucks because it will be a tainted win for either fighter now which is a shame.

Was reading some articles this morning regarding the whole thing and Jones could be looking a 3 years in jail so it will be interesting to see how every thing unfolds

Hes not restricted from travel, they asked for this not to be applied due to work commitments and the low bail amount when he met the judge yesterday and it was granted.

By the same logic, Tito, Randy, Vitor, Chuck, Rampage, Forrest, Evans, Machida, Shogun and Jon Jones were never true champions at 205, as nobody took the belt off Frank Shamrock, the first LHW champ, who vacated the title undefeated.

Pleasantly surprised that they took this stance. DC/Rumble is still a very compelling fight and I'll certainly be tuning in.

Curiously a major beneficiary of this will probably be Conor. If he takes his shot against Aldo he'll become Mr.UFC, and will be the face of the Reebok deal along with Ronda. From no name to top of the sport in just over two years - hell of a story and you'd have to hand it to him if he pulls it off.

Time has a big part to play in that. I'm sure people were thinking "Tito isn't the real champ". But there's no way you can deny that if DC beats Anthony Johnson, people (including you) will be thinking "Ah, but he's not the real #1. it's not so long ago since Jones beat DC"

What does Jones have to say about this?

Most likely there goes Jones's chance at beating Anderson Silva's number of consecutive title defences.

Finally the ufc grew a set of balls and punished this vile thug. Although i feel they had no choice.

Now hopefully he does time in prison.

That's my point. After a while, it won't matter. People will forget, or stop caring. (Or Jones will be back).

FWIW, when Tito first won the title he was only a few months out from a failed title shot. Essentially the same as DC's spot now.

I strongly dislike Jon Jones and have done since he split from and fought Rashad Evans, not that I liked him very much either.
But, I wanted to see him beat in the ring and not by his own vices and bad decisions.
It annoys me for the sport that going forward it had muddied the waters as to championship lineage and who the "true" champ really is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,590 ✭✭✭CurryFlavoured

Still some great fights going forward. Hopefully Gus performs well against Glover and gets the next shot, then you've got JBJ's big comeback at some stahe. As someone said in another thread, this could potentially bring in even more viewers and spice up the division. JBJ won't be gone for much more than 12 months imo.

While it's disappointing we wont get Jones vs Johnson, beyond that I think it's going to be a great thing for the division with some nice match-ups, and I'm already looking forward to the Jones comeback fight, starring Daniel Comier as Homer Simpson

Jones tweeted that he "let everyone down" or something. The whole situation is ludicrous. He's got some terrible advisors/mentors in his corner obviously and needs dumped on his ass to wake him up. The guy spent a single night in rehab so this was always on the cards.

Oh and the UFC took this decision because it was time to cut Jones adrift, not because it was the right thing to do. Jones was clearly a liability and going to be problematic down the road too. You cut your losses early in those situations. Happens to be the right thing to do but that's not the motive here imho :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,712 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Probably needed to be done before he ended up in prison or worse. Jones needs to go away and sort his life out. And no doubt the UFC will promote the hell out of his eventual return. Everybody loves a comeback story.

No hanging around from REEBOK in fairness...Wonder will they replace jones with another high profile fighter as the face of the brand for UFC purposes along with Conor and Ronda ?

Looks like he's off the UFC P4P list too.

Guess Silva's whole passing the torch to the new GOAT after the Diaz fight didn't really work out that well.

I was thinking it seems turning a blind eye has now cost Dana white more in the long run. Lets say after the coke fiasco, white gives jones 6 months unpaid suspension. It may have been enough to wake the clown up and serve as warning to others. But as they "stood by him" and did the sponsors, it only gave him an inflated sense of his own worth.... Sack me??? john Jones, biggest draw in the UFC??? Hell NO!!!

even with the fight on stage between him and cormier, both should have been publically warned for their behaviour!! so In my humble opinion, the UFC were at fault by NOT Causing, but creating an environment were Jones could get worse and eventually almost Kill somebody for lack of having any sense!!

    Just my opinion.

Reebok dropping him is an absolute farce and what I was talking about before, this culture of taking away everything from people who make mistakes.

Reebok picked him up because Nike dropped him. Why? Because he failed a drugs test for Cocaine! So Reebok were happy to sign him up knowing he's a coke addict, yet run for the hills when he gets into a road traffic accident? It stinks to be honest!
