UKIP candidate confuses two Asian reporters - while claiming she's not racist

Yes, I know UKIP are a British political party, and reporting on British news is tantamount to treason in the eyes of some people here (except when it comes to their TV shows and football matches).

I just found the irony delicious that, while UKIP deputy chair, Suzanne Evans, was insisting her party aren't racist (and maybe they're not), she managed to confuse one British Asian reporter - Krishnan Guru-Murthy - for another British Asian reporter - Faisal Islam.

Skip 1 min 55 secs into the video. Talk about bad timing!

That's not racist though, it's just kind of funny.

They don't actually look too dissimilar. But she called him Krishnan right before calling him Faisal and apologised straight away.

Ah more of a slip of the tongue.

She called him by his correct name 30 seconds earlier.

It's not racist if they actually do look alike.

Its been proven that we find it hard to differentiate people of different races to our own. Its not racist, its just how your brain works.

May or may not have anything to do really with the subject matter but anyway.Marjorie Dawes was my favourite Little Britain character

I hate UKIP as much as anyone else but this is just sensationalist. If it was two British journalists that she mixed up nobody would've batted an eyelid. But because they were Asian, the racist card played.

If UKIP are racist why do they have candidates from all different ethnic groups canvassing for them ?

not the first time UKIP have been accused of being racist

I think the more the media attack UKIP the more votes they will get

Racism certainly isn't getting two names mixed up.

Too often people cry racism for the merest thing and that detracts from the real issues.

I think someone needs to look up the definition for 'racist'.

It's quite possible she's racist since she's a member of UKIP, but she's not racist for just confusing names.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 24,465 ✭✭✭✭darkpagandeath

Please Explain to me how that is Racist ? This is just another "To the internet to express my outrage". I really don't know how people get day to day stuff done.

I called a guy I play football with by one of the other guys names the other day. Theyre both white. No I'm wondering am I racist.

I'd vote UKIP if I were british.

Well seeing as you're not, they dont want you in their country.

If you're not British but living in Britain would you vote for them? What if that results in them getting in to power and kicking you out?

Actually, UKIP are fine with Irish in the UK. I know it's presuming the poster is Irish but the chances are being on an Irish forum they are.

Firstly, the Irish are not considered to be foreign citizens in the UK under the Ireland Act. UKIP have already stated that they have no wish to change this.

Secondly, two of Farages kids and his ex wife are Irish citizens. I doubt he wants to kick them out.

Haha since when ? Don't they just want to boot out people that are.

1 on the dole and Not from the UK.
2 Kick out if you cant get a job in an amount of time.

all that kind of stuff like Australia ?

Sorry but I think I missed the racist bit......british person mixed two british people up for a few seconds!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,094 ✭✭✭wretcheddomain

If David Cameron made this error, nobody would talk of racism.

When UKIP make this error, everyone jumps at the opportunity to call them racist.

It's as if anti-UKIP folks are desperate for the party to be racist, so they look for every conceivable reason to brand them racist. The reality is, though, that UKIP is a non-racist non-sectarian party with a mosaic of different ethnic and minority groups within their ranks and parliamentary candidates.

They also ban people who have previously been a member of the BNP, not even the Con/Lab axis do the latter.

Just to be clear, if you read my post, I never said that Suzanne Evans was racist.

I just said that it was bad timing to confuse two Asian people at the very moment you're claiming that you and your party not racist.

Why does race come into the confusion ?

Why does race come into the confusion ?

You're right. I suppose she could have just as easily confused him with Jon Snow, or any other Channel 4 presenter.

It had nothing to do with the fact that Faisal Islam is also British Asian that Suzanne Evan confused Krisnan Guru-Murthy with him.

I think UKIP are disgusting and many of their members are racist but I really cant see any issue with mixing up names.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I'm white and I mix up white people's names from time to time. UKIP are crazy and terrify me but not because of this.

This is a distraction from the real reasons why they are a terrible political movement

The media (sponsored by supporters of the mainstream parties) see UKIP as a serious threat in this election. I'm not surprised they're publicizing suck minor gaffes.

Teachers at my daughters' school consistently mix them up. And it's not like they walked through the door yesterday for the first time.

They're not even in the same year.

    Must be racist teachers.

They don't see them as a serious threat in this or any election, even if UKIP have a wildly successful election they won't score more than 6 seats, that's less than half of what the DUP might return.
What really terrifies the media is not a paltry handful of seats, it's the fact that they have made immigration, the EU and a host of other issues that the liberal media don't think people should be allowed discuss in public, election issues. The attacks on UKIP are virulent because it might lead to 'incorrect thought' by the populace and thus they have to be supressed.

Farage isn't against anyone. Under his proposals future immigrants won't be judged on their passport of nationality - but on their skills and qualifications. Like in Australia or in Canada.
