Lely splendimo

I am in the market for an 8' mounted disc mower. The best value seems to be the lely splendimo based on the couple of calls to local dealers so far. I know very little about these but the sales rep tells me each disc is packed with grease and is a sealed for life job. This scares me. I reckon no moving part should be sealed for life or have I picked him up wrong?

I had it kind of narrowed down to the mainstream brands like lely, kuhn and claas. They have local backup and marangon don't, while malone are very new and I would rather not spend that much on a new to market product over an established brand.

Is it just for your own use or will there be contracting involved? I looked into it last yr but held off, lely are supposed to be very easy drive, but that little shaft in the bed is designed to break to avoid damage. Are you going new or second hand? If you do a search on bff there's a fair bit of info there.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Brand new. For my own use only. Mainly topping but would knock maybe 15 acres strong paddocks for bales throughout the year and mow maybe 8-10 acres for hay if it suited most years. Going brand new as a 10 year old mower is only maybe €3k less than a new lely and I would get a lifetime from a new one. Sick of buying other men scrap at this stage tbh.

Know 2 lads with malone mowers. Neither happy with em. Have a vicon cm2400 myself. Very happy with it. Not the strongest built mower but excellent to cut. Won't take abuse. Lads on here have great praise for krone. Know of good few with kuhn too, great strong mower but not the best to cut they say

We have a krone 9 foot conditioner mower, very happy with it. It's 2001 and have it four years now, clean and tidy. Keep the oils changed every year and keep sharp blades and it cuts very cleanly. Cutting about 45 or 60 acres a year.

Bought a new lely 7foot a couple of years ago. Drive it with a 65 hp tractor no bother, handy for knocking small bits of meadow and topping. No complaints so far but I wouldn't be doing big acreage.

Have a khun myself and wish i had a lely or other make. They're not ideal for topping imo cause the fold up hood gets covered in ****e and is a pain to fold over then. Had a tarrup before that and it didn't need to be folded before lifting to transport position. Are tarrups/kevernalands available near you?

Planning on buying a krone 280 EC in the next few days, dealer v keen to sell, looked at kevernaland, Kuhn, lely, krone iAd best priced but not a massive difference between them, liked the shaft drive onbthe krone.
Lely would have been next choice, bit dearer, and dealer a bit away
Went for mid mounted EC over the side mount AM model

Is it just Lely that has the quick blade change? Don't remember coming across them on anything else..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,677 ✭✭✭stanflt

    Lely is Irish for s****
Have mine about 6 years and only does 3-400 acres of pre mowing/ topping per annum

Cracks every where- bowls fall off- and I had to weld a bit of section bar from the hood to the base to stop mower damaging the gearbox as cover is mounted to gearbox- a real balls of a job

Can you use any af these in fields with the odd stone? Hate the topper and it leaves lines of the cut grass on one side. Can they survive the odd belt?

Not good in heavy crops. I havent used one myself. I told them they shouldn't be cutting heavy crops anyway when paying by the bale ! 2 x 5 bales per acre cuts as opposed to 1 x 10 bale per acre cut is my motto

edit to say Robson above has one and happy with it so it may be operator error !

Definitely not CM. They don't like stones at all !

We have a krone AM model on a handy sized tractor. Easy to drive, belts dont slip as you have a direct drive shaft, its way quieter than a kuhn which we had and the biggest saver i think is you don't have to fold back the cover every Time you want to go into another paddock. It gives a nice clean cut and good for topping as well

The keverland has a round disk so there's no narrow point for it to get jammed that being said you wouldn't mow with big stones around

Have a lely splendimo 240 conditioner mower and couldn't fault it, very good mower and very easy drive, had a 75hp tractor driving it once when I was badly stuck, going handy alright but did the job, usually drove with 90hp tractor no prob

Have a splendimo mower, its easy to drive, cost less than Malone or kunn, it can be repaired easily as the bed is modular not that I've had to make any.
Also came with topping skids which great for keeping paddocks clean.
Biggest issue I have with the mower is its designed for the continent as in driving on the right hand side of the road. When carrying the mower along the road here the mower hangs out in the middle of the road and is dangerous. So for that reason, if you intend to be out on the road with the mower then look elsewhere.

I have a Lely Splendimo. 5'6. It's a bit short but it's fine foe me. Easy drive and easy change the blades.
I have it 5 year without bother, I drive easy so it's ok.

Stan AFAIK the newer ones are better made, I think your's has the square drive shaft in the bed? The newer ones have a hexagon shaped shaft. What width is yours?

We bought s major mower in 2013. Taught we were being nice buying irish. It lasted 3 weeks and fell appart. Skids came loose, swarthing discs came off. It was loud and awkward to handle poorly painted and just ignorant in general. if i was you id stay away from them imo. All they are is a marrigon mower painted green
