Is Boxymo a legit company? I've read reviews on them and they don't seem great. But they're quotes are unreal cheap!

They're a legit company, I have my policy with them as it was the only reasonable quote I could get. Only with them one month though, but no complaints so far.

Thanks mad to get on the road and boxymo seems like the only affordable route to go

I've been insured with Boxymo for 10 months now, haven't had any major problems with them at all. The km thing though does bug me. I bought the 10000km policy and you get reward km every month based on your driving score, although now with only 8 weeks left on my policy I'm finding myself not able to afford driving somewhere far away because I have to 'save the km'. Obviously you can buy top up km but they're quite expensive and not worth it in my opinion.

When I was looking for insurance last June I had just passed my driving test so had 0 years NCB, 0 named driving experience and 0 months on my licence, plus I was 18, male and a student. Literally had all factors against me. They only offer fully comp insurance too and they quoted me 1413. The cheapest I could get off any other company was 2100.

They seem very cheap - however I've heard bad stories when it comes to contacting there customer service. Also should you not want to renew with them it seems they make it as hard as possible to give you your no claims cert at the end

Which review said that about the no claims cert? I'm interested because my insurance is up in just over 5 weeks time and I want to change.

There's one mention of it on that review page - just search the word "cert". I think there was also mention of it on these forums to as I remember reading about it somewhere. Just make sure you let them know in plenty of time I guess

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,738 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

Yeah their customer service can be a bit brutal, you'll never get through to them on the phone, but they've been fairly fast at responding to messages through their system. You just need to make sure you send them all the right documents at the start, front and back scans of your licence etc and you should be fine.

I agree the mileage cap is a pain, but that's why it's so cheap I suppose. And the box does make you watch how your driving most of the time.

My quote was 1400 fully comp for a freshly passed learner permit on a 00 micra, cheapest I got elsewhere was 2500 for third party.

What way does it work with the box? If you break the speed limit you get in trouble?

No, but they give you a driver score at the end of each month, the higher your score the more extra reward KMs you can earn on top of your policy. I assume they can use this info for when you want to renew your policy as well.

If you were in an accident they can use the info as well so if you were speeding at the time of your accident they'd be able to tell.

makes sense. I'd never have one in my car but if the quote was 800 vs 2000 it would be hard to resist.

It's really much of a muchness, it's not as bad as people make it out to be to be honest, especially for a learner who should probably be watching his speed anyways.

My insurance is half what most places quoted me so it works for me anyways, really the only viable option for a young learner unless you've got mental money!

Looking on boxymo's site and you can buy kilometres? So you can presumably run out of kilometres... But of course, the site doesn't actually say that. Anyone know if you can run out of kilometres and what happens if and when you do?
(boxymo quoted me €1100 and everywhere else was €2000+ and I simply can't afford that) thanks in advance.

Yeah you can buy extra KM, think it's something mental like 150 quid for 1000

the airbag unit records plenty :

Depending on which ACM (Airbag Control Module) is installed and the year of the vehicle, the Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) Tool can obtain for 5 seconds prior to impact:
    vehicle speed
    brake switch status
    percent throttle
    engine speed
as well as the post-impact delta-V or change in speed
    driver’s seatbelt circuit status
    airbag warning lamp status
ignition cycles at deployment and since the accident

Yeah that's on the site, but I'm wondering what happens if you run out of KMs and can't buy more. If I'm out in town and run out of them, do I have to buy more before I can go home? Will my car just not start? Or will I be charged extra for using extra KMs over what I've already bought?

I can live with it storing 5 seconds of data. However having a GPS box constantly phoning home and affecting my policy and insurance is not something I would like to get involved with.

I've been with Boxymo for 11 months now and honestly it was a very wise decision on my part. I saved myself about 500 euro on my policy as I was 18, male with no no claims bonus, so it was a very cheap quote compared to what I was being quoted. I am however going to go with a different insurance company next year just because I will have 1 NCB and my premium will go down somewhat when I renew.

The only communication Boxymo give in relation to the box is a text every Friday to let you know what speeding (if any) was done during the week. It helped me learn to control my speed even after I passed my test and let me know how I was going in terms of speed.

How is this box attached to the car? Is it self powered and has a SIM card inside to communicate? Or is it integrated into the cars Ecu etc?

I honestly have no idea. All I know is that the guy came to install it, it took about an hour, it's somewhere underneath the dashboard, not visable at all and no one can notice it.

What happens when you don't renew your policy? Do they take it out or does it continue sending data forever?

When the guy came out to fit mine he said there was one already in the car so I assume they don't remove them. The insurance company wouldn't have the permission or right to collect the data if you don't renew the policy so it wouldn't be used.

Im in the same boat as most people here, 20 and on a provisional.

BoxyMo are quoting me €1400 for 16000 miles with a potential 3600 more. This is incredibly cheap compared to others.

Im waiting to finish my 10th lesson to get a First Ireland quote but I suspect it wont beat BoxyMos.

So I have a few questions about the box, what happens when you go above the speed limit? Does it know what the speed limit is on the road youre currently on? How do you get the bonus points ?

And is 16000km a lot? Ive no idea. I would only be using it for cruising around town and 10km to work

For me Boxymo were quoting 1500 euro but First Ireland were quoting 1700 euro (on a provisional).

I paid the 200 more and didn't have to call out an engineer to install the box and all the other stuff. In my opinion it was well worth it.

Excellent, Ive 3 more lessons to do before I can get a quote off First Ireland.

What age were you when you got that quote and on what size car dyou mind me asking?

They gave me like €400 back when I passed the test.

I only had 10000km and I was travelling cross country for college and managed fine with the bonus km's so I'd say you're grand!

You get a text every Friday around 9am that lets you know how many times you went over the limit and the severity of it. Nothing else happens except for it damages the amount of bonus km's you get. The box is like a GPS so it does know the roads you go on and the speed limits. The better you drive, the more bonus km's you get.

Perfect, thank you very much. I suppose one of the other advantages is that the insurance on a 1.2/1.3 is similar enough to a 1.0 as opposed to other insurance companies. So Im not as limited

I started off with them with a 1L micra, halfway through changed to a 1.4L golf which most insurers would throw the book at you for a 20 year old on a provisional, only cost me an extra 200 quid.

That's a damn good deal my first car will be a golf and at 28 with no experience they are offering me their highest package for kms for 998 that's half what most companies are charging.

Ive just bought my first car, 1lt Suzuki Swift. Getting it Nct'd next week and taxed.

Ive just turned 21 and BoxyMo are quoting me €1125 Fully comp. Or €1050 if I pay €750 excess which I might just do. That's for 16,000km + whatever bonus miles I gain.

That's a deposit of €295 then €80 a month for 9 months! This should be even cheaper if I pass my test in Feb/March.

I know theyre supposed to be a hassle to deal with but surely it's worth using them for a year or maybe two so I can use a standard insurance company in a few years with two years no claims (Hopefully!). I mean @ €80 a month its almost worth getting even if Im not planning on driving for the year just for the No claims?

Edit - Sorry those quotes were assuming I had a full driving license, Doh! €1395 a year for provisional. Still an excellent deal

Can I ask had you a provisional licence when traveling across country because I was wondering if I went with boxymo would they cancel the policy if I went onto a motorway with only a provisional licence?
