Correct size for images in Wordpress.com website

I am helping my partner to update his website - He is an artist and there are lots of images on it. I am concerned that these images take too long to load up and am seeking advice on what size the images should be - at present they are around 680 kb. The whole page is less than a MiB. Practically lightweight by todays standard. I wouldn't worry too much about it. But you can look at Google's PageSpeed Insights for some tips

The page is light but some of the gallery images are over-sized at 4,368 x 2,912 pixels. 200k circa ea.

Standard HD 1920x1080 is all you'd ever need at 60% Q-jpg until were all using 2540pxW 27" IPS Macs or 4k+ screens.
The images aren't exactly swathes of colour so may get away with mono or further compression.
