The late great Spanish golfer Severiano Ballasteros once played in a pitch 'n putt competition at the Spawell golf centre in Templeogue. At the first hole Seve's partner's shot finished quite close to the hole and it was suggested by some in the crowd that Seve concede the hole. Seve declined. Why?

Seve couldn't see the ball - he was blindfolded!

In order to level the playing field between the blind golfers and the professionals the latter were handicapped in that manner.

My abiding memory of the event was seeing these immaculately clad, suntanned stars of world golf making their way ever so slowly and gingerly down the fairway clutching grimly to their caddies while their afflicted opponents strode on ahead confidently with but a guiding hand on their forearm.

Seve went on to win the Irish Open Championship in a playoff with Bernhard Langer (who also played in Spawell).

What have these got in common:

    Haiti
    Mauritius
    Papua New Guinea
    Vanuatu
    Benin

And for a bonus, what other country could be included?

The capital of each one is a "Port."

You could add Trinidad, and Laois!

    Correct!

    Benin

Which one of these countries has a community descended from Polish soldiers who, having been were sent there to quell a rebellion, joined the rebels?

Surely this one hasn't stunned you all into silence. Dammit, if I knew nothing about horses I'd still have a flutter if there were only five in the race. I'll give it another few hours and then post another if there are no attempts.

    P.S. a propos

Is Port Laoise the only port in the world on an underground river? There has to be an opening there for novel tourism, gondolas in the subway.

I never heard of them but based on loose history; Napoleon had a Polish regiment and there was a rebellion in Haiti at his time. So maybe the two facts coalesce in a Polish Community in Haiti.

Just realised I owe a question.

What surname connects the fictional Winston, Wayland and Harriet in novels by (not necessarily in the same order) Jane Austin, Walter Scott & George Orwell.?

    Greek or Hawaiian?

Wherever it is I clearly didn't make much of an impression there as nobody ever said it to me.

    Correcto.

One of these days I shall find a question that takes you longer than 30 seconds.

Or you might let me know when you're on holidays so I can post in your absence? :P :D
