The Julian and Gregorian calendar both used Jan 1st as the year start but the Romans set Jan 1st in 153 BCE to match the beginning of the civil year when the two newly elected consuls began their one-year tenure.

I didn't mean to post such a difficult question, but I thought that, between the bad press it got at the time, and all the 'sciency' people around here, it would have been quite easy to answer. I guess the 'sciency' people around here deal with other branches of science.
