    Thanks RQ.

Busy day in work. I'll do my best today!

How long have you been in the sport?

    4 years now.

    What is your best result?

Interestingly enough I would now put my disastrous Dublin 2014 time (2.52) as my best result. The day went as badly as it could have but I managed to see it out (somehow). Nightmare from mile 5. 21+ miles of a mental battle! Running by house at mile 18 was cruel. I really felt in great shape (2.40) but pushed that out to 2.45 starting out on the day as I was still battling a cold.

What is your favourite flavour of crisps?

Eh, is that a serious question? :)

    One runaway winner here.

    King Cheese and Onion.

Long gone are the days of two packets, 4 slices of bread and a mountain of butter as a nighttime treat!

    Favourite race distance?

Marathon. No better feeling in the world when heading towards the finish, knowing that all the blood, sweat and tears during training were worth it.

Do you have long term goals? Care to share any of them?

Sub 2.30 marathon in the next 3/4 years. I think that's a realistic goal but an extremely tough one at the same time.

Do you do any weights/strength/core training, or just get out and run?

The one area that I am really working on at the moment. I am extraordinary weak in the upper-body so I think targeting this area will help massively.

    Favourite training session?

Any type of hill session. I'm good going up but awful coming down though. My height doesn't really help me!

    Thanks Tang.

How did you cope with the celebrity status of having your photo in Irish Runner last summer?

Haha. I'm right up there with Bressie! I have never let all the fame go to my head. I'm just in it for the money and girls.

Have you gotten over Rotterdam last year yet?

    One step at a time!

Last week was quite interesting. I mentioned it to Conor that 12 months on I now look back on Rotterdam with a lot of happy memories. My time of 2.50 was a good result but I was initially so disappointed. I nearly broke down on the finish line. I was pretty disgusted with myself. It's stupid but if I ran 36 seconds quicker (2.49:59) I would have been delighted. Sometimes as runners we get caught up on times way too much. For example, is there really a difference between a 3.01 runner and a 2.59 runner? No. On the day it's about the fine margins. I was in 2.48 shape but ran 2.50. No one really cares except me. If you run the best race you can on the day that's all you can ask of yourself. Some days it there and some days it not.

Lessons you learnt from running that marathon?

    1. Get to races on time!
    2. Do not end up in the joggers section of the 10km 5 minutes before the off.
    3. I'm pretty good at scaling 8ft high fences.
    4. Pace sensibly. I lost 2 min in the first 2km. I was up after 5k. I went too fast 2-5k to catch-up and this left me with dead legs for the next 37k.
    5. Plan, plan, plan. I allowed myself to slip in this regard in DCM '14. Plan for heat and humidity. If it's mild great but if it's an unexpected warm one you are both mentally and physically prepared. If I put as much effort into my hydration/nutrition I would have ran 2.44-2.2.46 in Dublin.

    Sligo football, discuss?

The other half is from Sligo so I get the chance to see some games up there now and again. The standard is mixed but the community spirit is quite something. Even in Sligo every club has very good facilities. Athletics Ireland should take note. I love my football and hurling. I try to get to as many games as I can.

Whats the fetish with taco chips/garlic cheese chips?

    Where do I start?!

In 2007 I was introduced to my first ever Garlic and Cheese Chips and to be honest, I have never looked back. Sure, I have occasionally made the drunken mistake of ordering a Taco Chips but we are all human, aren't we! The pleasure of devouring a Garlic Cheese Chips at 3am after a night on the town is still one of mans greatest pleasures :).

    Favourite beer?

In the pub, Guinness. At home Franziskaner, Lech etc. Good decent beers. I do also enjoy the odd G&T. I also enjoy my whiskeys.

    Roll on the Beer Mile......:D

    Thanks rom!

How long and how many long runs do you do in a marathon build up?

As many as I can to be honest. I have never looked back and evaluated to be honest. I am aerobically quite strong so running 20-24 miles easy doesn't really phase me. The biggest thing I see missing from many runners plan is the midweek long run, particularly after a hard session on the previous day. 13-16 mile runs on the Wednesday were the norm. Constantly running on tired legs.

What pace do you do marathon runs compared to PMP?

    Anything from 6.50-7.20 a mile.

    Would you run an ultra?

I did in February but I was in a world of pain with the stomach. The right race at the wrong time. I will defeinitely be back to Donadea sometime.

Whats your PBs for shorter distances?

Quite soft. 17.03 for 5k (tactical race). All I wanted to do was run and win (and win I did!).
35:27 for 10km. It was a tempo run in the Dundalk 10km 10 days before the Rotterdam Marathon. Cruised throught the whole way. Have only raced one 10km since and I ran a high 35. Not a good day. Pretty confident I will get sub 16.20 for the 5k and around 34 minutes for the 10k this year.

I see that you posted before about Road to London inspiring you when you were not running. What is your main inspiration?

Yeah, I supposed that documentary made me sit up and take notice of the demands of running in particular. I tend to be inspired by the people and stories around me. Although the story of Steve Way is remarkable and a testament to his hard work and dediction. I suppose I draw most of my inspiration from my Mam. In 2012 she was very ill and I took to running as a form of escapism. The proudest moment of my life was rushing back home to see her after I completed my first marathon DCM'12.

On what surface do you do your long runs?

All on road.......I know, I know!

    What session do you love/hate?

    Love: Hill Session
Hate: Nothing really but the thoughts of 5k training make me a bit anxious.

What was the biggest lesson you have learned that has helped you improve?

The emphasis on consistency drilled into me at an early stage. It's all about not losing focus and training week in week out with fail. That and not letting a niggle turn into an injury.

Also, knowing when and when not to run through pain.

Do you think you could have improved as much without a coach?

No, not a chance. Having GoH in the early stages made all the difference. The values/approach he instilled will stand to mefor the rest of my running 'career'.

What is your recovery consist of after a race and the proceeding days?

I'm not the greatest for recovery to be honest. This is something I am addressing. I'm the sort of person that runs a HM PB and does another 6+ miles that night and a very long run the next day.

Although my calfs get an awful lot attention .

    Thanks Duanington :pac:

What is your sporting background DR?

GAA as a child, up to the age of 12/13. Here music took over and my sporting enheavours basically ended until I took up running in my mid/late 20's.

I was a crackin' left back and full back by the way!

Can you give us an indication of how your times have come down over the period you have been training?

    DCM '12: 3.46 (after a 6 months training)
    ROTTERDAM '14: 2.50

Were there any key changes that you made along the way that you feel contributed to your progress?

Getting a coach (running coach) in the summer of 2013. Gave me the love of running and changed the way I looked at the sport.

Joining a club. A must do for any runner. Don't waste another second and JOIN A CLUB EVERYONE!

    Thanks Kit!

Do you really have amazing quads ?? (feel free to post evidence ....)

You'll have to see for yourself ;). Might see you at the Beer Mile!

Are you with a club, if so, for how long ?

I am with Clonliffe for just over a year. Unlike Tallaght we have no burning cars in the home-straight and unlike Crusaders well, we actually have a track....:pac:

Clonliffe is a great club, with great runners and coaches. The only problem is that I now live quite far away but I really enjoy the sessions up there when I can make it. A club I highly recommend.

Did you run as a kid or are you a recent convert ?

Never ran as a kid. Think I may have died a death on a school XC though. Still my only XC race to date. Other than that no. Virtually all on my 20's involved no sport, although I did play a bit of GAA a few years ago. I was a fit runner but the lads ran rings around me. The turn of pace they have over the first 10m puts 99% runners to shame.

Anything of interest about yourself you'd care to share ?

    -I have never jogged
-I am a classical trained professional musician
-I am a living oxymoron (Ex: I love planes but fear flying)
-I have a man crush on Daniel Day Lewis
-I am addicted to heroi coffee and popcorn
-I have never watched the Godfather Part 2 or 3 and to be honest, I didn't really like the first
-I once enjoyed doing the macarena with fulls moves in a 2 man tent with 7 other people . Never drank absinthe since!

    Nce one Doc :D

Thoughts on Peguins (in general) ?

They don't like me and I don't like them.

    Worst ever hungover workout?

    Easy one.

The day after the Tralee Marathon. I ran it as a training marathon. Ecoli was pacing the 3 hour group so I tagged along with him. Well I tag but I came in at 2.59 and he was a few seconds north of the 3 hour mark :D. That night was a bit of a mad one with GoH and I was in a pretty bad way the next morning. Shocking infact. Down to breakfast to have a monster fry-up. I struggled back up to the hotel room and got my runners on (what was I thinking??!). The plan was for 5 easy miles to keep the legs ticking over. By mile 2 I was in bits. I tripped over something and ended up on my ear. By mile 3 I was dry heaving. The last two miles were a blur. I was weaving all over the road like a drunk old fart. I was running down the main street heading towards the hotel and I wondered why everyone was staring at me. It quickly dawned on me that I was running in the parade. I completely forgot it was St. Patrick's Day. I was a f!ckin' mess.

Best jazz musician of all time?

Great question. I am more of a big-band man. I play in a lot of bands up and down the country. Big fan of Buddy Rich.

    Favourite band?

Band of Horses. Most have never heard to them but a very popular band in America. I have seen them twice and they have been amazing nights. Music for the soul.

Other than that: The Smiths, Damian Rice, Katy Perry (for her 'voice' :P), Bressie (because he's so handsome, talented and a great runner) etc.

    Favourite race in Ireland?

One of: Raheny 5 Mile. Athlone 3/4. DCM (the old course).

    Great questions Kit.

    Few questions about your music:

    Are you a full-time musician?

Yes. Like any freelance trade it's up and down. When I am busy I am very busy and when I am quite, I run more! I also teach 30+ kids a week.

What instrument do you play & what type of music?

    Trombone.

Anything that pays :). I am mainly classically trained but enjoy playing in bands (Electric Picnic, Three Arena etc.). It's a really mixed bag.

Do you listen to music while you run or keep both separate?

That's a good question. It depends really. At the moment I am really enjoying the miles so I leave the headphones at home. When motivation is a bit lower listening to music/Newstalk can help you switch off to a degree and helps distract the mind.

Re Football/hurling (questions coming from a Cork woman living in a house of avid Dubs supporters so think I've been converted at this stage )

Hurling is the best sport in the world but I don't really understand the sport as I have never really played it. You cannot beat a good game of hurling. It makes rugby look like a walk in the park.

What do you think of the Dubs league campaign?

It has become fairly obvious that the best way to contain Dublin is by employing the blanket defence. Dublin really struggle against the mass defence as their game is preferably a free-flowing attacking game. I feel that they have used the league to experiment as the real stuff starts in the summer. As with most experiments, some things have worked and some things have not. I am pretty confident they will come good when the championship starts.

Interestingly I have only really started to support Dublin in the past 4/5 years. Before that I was a neutral supporter. The final of 2011 was the greatest sporting spectacle I have ever been at.

How will they do in the championship?

Hard one to call. They will once again walk through Leinster but I think this really doesn't help come the knockout games. My prediction? If Dublin get to the final they will win it. The toughest game will probably come in the quarter finals for the reasons outlined above!

    Anything but a Cork win........seriously!!

Interesting responses - my other half is a musician also (as are a lot of our friends) so what you say above resonates.

As for a Cork win - the league final will be interesting in our house (to be honest I never followed it much when I lived in Cork so would have more of an affinity with the Dubs at this stage but I'm a bit torn when it comes to admitting that - not sure if it's good for the kids to see that you don't support your home place ???) Was at the Donegal, Tyrone & Derry games so see what you mean about the blanket defence !!! Roll on the summer :)

    Hi DR
Why don’t you like penguins or they not like you?

Are you delighted Dr.Quirky’s back? Oh sorry, I mean Dr. Quirky’s good friend DocQ

If you could train like a professional athlete (coaches, physios, nutritionists etc at your beck and call) for a full year in another country away from your family and friends (can’t visit you) and dedicate all your time to your running would you take the offer?

I’ll give you a blank cheque right now. Name your price to give up running forever?

    Favourite training logs?

I read on your log that you are coaching a female runner. Are you enjoying it and how far do you think you can take her?

    Thanks!

    Hey Joey.

Thought I recognised your picture before, seems we have the same musical background. And a similar path into exercise, but I'm doing 3 sports instead of just the 1. ;)

    Really? Small world!

Any races you would love to do?

Nothing too unusual, just the regulars really. Chicago, London and New York marathons for sure. After that I would love to give a trail/mountain race a bash. Something completely out of my comfort zone with no expectations.

What's your post workout meal or snack?

Ha, I was waiting for a food question! Truth be told I am bit of horse when it comes to food. I eat healthy but I eat all around me. Luckily I burn off most of those extra calories (I worry what would happen if I stopped training!). Usually I try to get something into me as quickly as possible, particularly after a long run. I don't have a typical meal after running. Whatever is in the fridge!

Favourite part of the trip to America for Paddys day?

    Now that's a question!!

It would have to the NY parade. Probably something I will never experience again. Once in a lifetime type of thing. That and getting an all expense paid trip to America! :)

    Hey Eldiva!

    Must say Band of Horses are tops, one band that still on my hitlist to go see. Anyway here go the questions;

They are a must see. Would bring a grown man to tears (not me though, i'm too hard!).

    Favourite shoe to train/race with?

I am a small bit of a shoe slut (what a horrible phrase, sorry!). I can pretty much wear everything and anything. I prefer a neutral light shoe. Typically I buy whatever is on sale and stock up. I am a huge fan of Puma. The 300 (and 350s) is one of the best runners I have ever came across. Asides from that, Cloudracers and Mizuno Ronin 4 (now not made anymore....er).

Worst/toughest moment you've endured physically and mentally during your running career?

The last 21 miles of DCM '14. Every mile was torture. I have no doubt it has stood to me and will do for a very long time. Agony. Luckily I had two great clubmates so I won a National Medal for my troubles. A reward of sorts, if undeserved.

Best gig you've ever been to?

Band of Horses in the Olympia. That or Coldplay (before they became sh!te) when I was a teenager in the old Point. Muse in the Point many years ago was some experience also.

    Best venue for a gig?

    Classical: Birmingham Symphony Hall
Comedy: Vicar Street (very hard to beat)

I am not a fan of any other venue in Ireland to be honest. The 3 Arena is a horrible place to play and to see a band in. Dublin is lacking a top class medium size venue.

What time do you think you could achieve for the beer mile this year?

It maybe a bit sad but I am treating this race very seriously! There's a lot of trash talk going on and I am all for that! I think I can run 6.40. TRR is past it at this stage. Too old with too many miles in the legs. It's time for a new kid on the block.

In saying that, there is a good chance I may come last. I will leave nothing in the tank so you may see doing a few penalty laps if it all goes belly up!!

If you could race anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

Good question. Can I say the Olympics next year in Rio?! I am on for a 2.16 later on in the year :P.

If you were having a dinner party and had to invite 4 boardsies, who would you invite and why?

    Careful now Anthony......:pac:

-Jebuz.......he needs a night out and a few drinks after his week (I am nice like that!)
    -Ultraman......for the craic!
    -Stazza......see below
    -Dr.Quirky......see above

I reckon the night could go two ways. Either way, no one's going home sober! God, could you imagine.........:D

Stazza's race report on the Tralee Marathon is still one my favorite things on boards.

    Hey Ososlo!

Why don’t you like penguins or they not like you?

I would rather not dig up the past to be frank. Whatever happens at 4am in Coppers, stays in Coppers. We both had too much to drink and well, things happened.

I'm not proud of it. I'm not ashamed of it either :D.

Are you delighted Dr.Quirky’s back? Oh sorry, I mean Dr. Quirky’s good friend DocQ

Is it really him? I am not too sure. To be honest I have no idea! Miss him though.

If you could train like a professional athlete (coaches, physios, nutritionists etc at your beck and call) for a full year in another country away from your family and friends (can’t visit you) and dedicate all your time to your running would you take the offer?

Super question. My initial reaction? Yes. Come back to me on that. That's a head scratcher!

I’ll give you a blank cheque right now. Name your price to give up running forever?

On boy. That's a tough one.

I really have no idea. How much do you have to offer? :). I am not driven at all by money, being rich doesn't interest me. Although if someone offered over 20k then I might start thinking about it.

    Favourite training logs?

I enjoy so many for all types of reasons. I'll name a few:

    TbL: Where in the world?
Krusty: Dedication, work ethic and he is self coached/runs by a plan. I find his methods of training really interesting as I know it wouldn't work for me but definitely does for him.
Jebuz: Although he is ahead of me (at the moment!) we have similar ambitions and goals so I find it easy to relate to hs approach and training

I read on your log that you are coaching a female runner. Are you enjoying it and how far do you think you can take her?

Yeah, I coach 2 or 3 lucky individuals :). That lady is particular will go far. She has a great attitude and I would back her to run 19:3x 5k this year, which would be a huge improvement. I take more pleasure from the results obtained by my athletes than I do from my own. A great sense of pride when things pay off.

    Alreet UM!

on the subject of coaching ..casanova,p and d,karl henry, stazza or just get and bleeding run?

At the moment I am just running. getting myself strong. The plan is to soon start up with a coach and tackle a 5k plan. Generic plans don't work for me. My background is in music. In music there is a lot of one-one-tuition (up to 4 hours). I respond well to working with someone. I need a fair bit of structure as last year proved, I am a good trainer and get myself in good shape but I race badly and don't peak when should be.

Next to Bressie, Karl Henry is right up there with my most disliked people! In some ways I admire him; no knowledge but making a great living.

Why do u always wear black?

Haha, do I? Probably the musician in me .

I actually wore the Donadea t-shirt for the first time on Thursday night. Looking forward to actually deserving it in a few years!

U seem to a good nose for bull**** ,who u think is the biggest bluffer in athletics in ireland?

Yeah, in my industry you can spot a joker from 100 yards. There's no hiding place. There are so many bullsh!ters in atheltics but no different to anywhere else really. I would have to go with the likes of Karl Henry. Anyone who gets a morbidly obese man to run is an idiot in my eyes.

    Lover or a fighter?

''I'm an a$$hole when i'm drunk but i'm ok in the mornings...'' :)

    I'm a lover ;).

    Hi Meno :)

How many years do you give yourself to be up there with the real FastLad's of this world?

Who is this fastlad? Great to have someone of that standard around the place but he is quite the recluse at the moment!

Do you think you will ever give Gary a run for his money? i.e. 67 minute HM or equivalent or is that just a figment of your imagination?

Good question. Gary is a complete freak on nature. What he achieved in the last few years has been remarkable. I still believe he has the capability of going sub 2.20. As a man of 40 years of age you would have to think he could have been an Olympian had he stepped up to the marathon in his early 30s.

67 minutes? Now, that would be a long-shot. I see no reason why I couldn't possibly go 69.xx if everything goes right for me over the next few years. Running is a sport of diminishing returns though. At some stage the improvements will end. At some stage a 1 second PB means as much as that 5 minute PB years before. I am interested in pushing myself to the limit and wherever that takes me I will take that.

Hey TW? (Where's my runners? :))

How did you get into running and what sports did you play at when younger?

GAA as a kid. Left-back was my position. Other than that nothing!

    Favourite place to train?

The Dublin Mountains. The inclines have brought me to tears but the views make it all worthwhile. Most of us take Dublin for granted. We have the sea, Phoenix Park and the mountains all within a short drive of the city.

Are you more slow twitch or fastwitch and what do you think you could run a 400m rep flat out?

I would have to say slow-twitch but I really don't know. I will give the 400m and 800m a bash during the summer at a graded meet. The thought scares the bloody life out of myself though! How fast? I reckon slow enough but we'll see!

    Have you ever been chicked?

Think Pauline Curley flew by in the marathon but other than that no!

Have you improved as a runner since joining Clonliffe?

Not as much as I would have liked but that's down to me.

    Greatest achievement in running?

Seeing my Mam's face when I arrived back home after my first marathon. See was too ill to come into the city but seeing the pride in her eyes will always remain my greatest achievement.

    Thanks Eldiva :)

This could be controversal but what are you take on some elaborate and complex coaching plans and sessions? Are you a fan?

I think for most runners and runners new to the sport simplicity is key. Running is a very simple sport, essentially it's a serious of mini-jumps to propel oneself forward. People and trainers often forget that. From my experience, the best coaches have the technical knowledge but communicate it to their athletes in a form that's easily understood. For example, once I see a post on this forum that's long-winded, overly technical and/or unnecessarily complex I immediately stop reading. Half the time it's complete drivel and serves virtually no purpose. The best coaches don't need to waffle, they get their across in the right way.

You can write line after line, paragraph after paragraph but I prefer to just say 'tempo run', 'recovery run' etc.

Who do you think is the most overrated Irish runner and international runner?

Overrated? Tough one. Controversial but in a few ways Mo Farah. Many have compared him to Bekele and Gebrselassie and in my eyes he is not in their league so for that reason alone he is overrated. I was very impressed by him half marathon time in Lisbon recently though. I guess my view is partly down to how the British Press cover him. Don't get me wrong, he's a great athlete but still overrated in my humble opinion.

Overrated Irish runner? None really spring to mind but the coverage and funding given to race walking is crazy. Paul Pollock doesn't get one single cent in funding. Joke.

Who do you think is the most underrated irish runner and international runner?

Underrated? Easy one. Mark Carroll. In many ways the best Irish runner of all time.

Internationally? Again no one springs to mind really but I really like the likes of Andy Vernon. Probably doesn't get the credit due to the Mo show.

What are your views in doping in this sport?

Once a cheat, always a cheat. Part of me thinks everyone deserves a second chance but the other part thinks a lifetime ban would be a fitting punishment.

Hey C, very sorry to hear about Boston. Your day will come.

Classically trained musician, holy fcuk, I'd you pegged as more a death metal bassist sort a guy :)

Do you consider yourself mentally tough, how important an aspect is it in a runners portfolio and is it something you work on?

    Excellent question.

    Mentality is everything.

I have a tendency to put a bit too much pressure on myself. I am a nightmare the week before any target marathon. I become mentally very weak during taper and let the demons build. I am probably mentally stronger than I think but it's an area I really need to work on.

I am my own harshest critic.

With hindsight what changes would you make (if anything) to your DCM training plan/cycle?

I put myself in good shape before Dublin. I ran Moone Kilomarathon 26.2k(like yourself!) @PMP 6.06p/m relatively comfortably. I know TRR didn't think but I really felt in 2.40ish shape. He was proved right so that's 1-0 to him :). I told myself that even on a bad day 2.45 was the minimum I could expect. I put in the miles ~95-105 miles per week for a huge block but certainly a lot of those miles could have been better used. I learned so much about my body during that cycle. Now it's all about working with someone and getting me to where I want to be.

I messed up the taper, as usual. As mentioned above, taper drains my confidence. I slashed and burned the miles because I felt tired and really apprehensive. In future I will increase the miles during the taper. My body is used to running 70-100 miles each and every week. It's doesn't like not running and seizes up if not kept ticking over. That's why I really like double days. They suit me.

    Hi D.R.
    Great read so far.
Who cleans GOH’s shoes – you or Meno?
Who’s the best looking – Ososlo or Kit3
Is ultrarunning, beyond 100k, really a sport?
    Stazza – muppet or genius?
Quirky – poodle with a Napoleon complex?
Why do you do your easy runs so fast?
Do you think you could do the pole vault and if so, how high?
Courtney Pine’s Children of the Ghetto featuring Susaye Greene – greatest track of all time?

Good luck with the running goals - I think you've got a great attitude.

    Really enjoying this, DR.

Who had the best brass - Dexy's or The Blades? :)

More about the taper please. Why not ease off, even acknowledging what your body is used to? Surely there's a way to refresh the legs and the engine for the big day, i.e. a way that involves running less for a short period?

    Coe or Ovett?

You mentioned you're a music teacher - what's your approach?

Karl Henry - never heard of him. Is that some eejit off the telly?

    Thx.

    Nice one P.

A man who knows his stuff. I like it....

    Bass or tenor trombone?

Bass and Tenor. You have to be pretty flexible as a freelancer.

    Favourite composer?

    Gustav Mahler.

Ever played with any big names?

Westlife, Late Late Show House Band.......etc. (how arrogant am I?!)

Oh, forgot the good ones: Tony Christie (amarillo!), Dickie Rock etc. :D

    Favourite indulgence, food and drink?

Once again, Garlic&Cheese Chips at 4am! Jameson and Guinness.

    Favourite Irish elite athletes?

John Treacy-love the clips on youtube of his LA marathon run
    Non running: Henry Shefflin

    Favourite International elite athletes?

Bekele. Simply awesome. An amazingly fluid running style-a joy to watch.

    Really enjoying the answers!

    Thanks!

    Thanks, great question BB.

    What brought you to boards?

I looked up some race and found the forum. The rest as they say is history!

Ideal training, how fast could you run 1 mile, 5k, marathon?

    This year?

    1 mile sober: 6.39
    1 beer mile:Oh, no idea. I'll say 4.4x (lol!)
    5k: Goal 15:59 (that'll be a very hard one-no leg speed!)
    Marathon: >2.39

Favourite place to run outside of the Dublin mountains?

Not Dublin 12 anyway. Got lost again in some housing estate....not my first time!

I really enjoy the canal stretch out to Sandymount and around the reserve. Incredible on a nice day.

You say your diet could improve, healthiest treat, least healthiest treat?

(As I put away some chips......)

    Healthiest? Popcorn/raisins
    Least: Garlic and Cheese Chips

I'm a bloody horse when it come to food. My mam used to call me the rubbish bin. Finish everything on the table. Think my record was 32 pizza slices at an all-you-can-eat pizza place. A proud day for the family!

    Best barging bin shoe purchase?

Think I got like 3 pairs of Puma Faas 350s for something like 100 euro. Deadly!

Race by Garmin or by feel?

Usually by garmin but for the next few races by feel. It will a steep and tough learning curve.

Marathon long runs - steady as she goes or mix it up?

Yeah, mix it up. I suppose repeating the same long run every week will only help so much. I like a good hard training run like Athlone 3/4 or a training marathon a few weeks out from the target marathon.

For a classically trained musician, you've a Shiite taste in music :D, guilty music pleasure?

    Ah here! :D

    Joe Dolan-Good Looking Woman

    Chuuuunnnne.......

    MILF?

    Question of the day.

Claire Byrne. She could interview me any day.

Thanks UP (I think!). Some crackin' questions below :)

Who cleans GOH’s shoes – you or Meno?

Mud doesn't stick to Gary's shoes, he goes too fast! In fact, I don't think I have ever seen him without runners on.I think thirstywork does most of any cleaning that needs to be done :). Part of the deal.

Who’s the best looking – Ososlo or Kit3.

Ah, God. Is there any way I can answer that and not come out a complete creep! Help .

Is ultrarunning, beyond 100k, really a sport?

Not for me but it's a sport. My only issue with ultras is that many go it the longer distances too early. I guess it's easier to go longer (and slower) to some degree. What would most find harder? 16x400 @5k pace or a slow 25 mile training run? I know I wouldn't blink twice at that long run but would need to build myself up for the track work. Like marathoning, to really improve you need to do the shorter stuff. I find it funny when people win/place well in these ultra/50+ mile races and have a marathon PB north of 3.20 (for example). In many ways it's a false reality. It can become a race to the bottom for many. There are the exceptions though. Athletes like Ray Lanigan on this very forum could run a sub 2.30 marathon if he wanted/trained for it. There's nothing wrong with that type of marathon time above, don't get me wrong but I have to question the level of competition.

Like me wanting a 2.30 marathon, is that going to happen without a 5k time of sub 15.50? Very very unlikely.

It's like these people who run 100s of marathons a year or do 100 marathons in 100 days. I just don't get it. Slightly off topic but give me one good marathon time over 100s of bad ones.

    Stazza – muppet or genius?

The answer kind of links in to a previous question posed. I do think he does know his stuff but for me at least he over-complicates.

Quirky – poodle with a Napoleon complex?

The Doctor will always divide and that is what I really like about. The thing is I can see why some people get annoyed by him. He tells it straight but I assure you, anytime he gives his opinion on someone's training/racing he does so with the best of intentions.

Great to see him run so well last year in Frankfurt. We did a training run of a good section of the Dublin course there last year and he went straight back and bloody booked his tickets to Germany and scrapped Dublin! A very wise man. Cannot drink for sh1te though. He'll be an embarrassment to himself and his county 'running' the beer mile :pac:.

Why do you do your easy runs so fast?

Think so? Yeah, I would have to agree. I have a default easy pace and I find it hard to run slower. It's a basic flaw in my training.

Run easy to run fast. Blah, blah!

Do you think you could do the pole vault and if so, how high?

Just ask Luke (ecoli) my leg strength is pretty woeful. I don't think I could manage anything at all to be honest. I imagine you would need a lot of explosive leg power. I hope to give the javelin a go though sometime.

Courtney Pine’s Children of the Ghetto featuring Susaye Greene – greatest track of all time?

Actually saw him years back in Dublin. Cool guy. Great track (just listening to it).

    Finally, is Krusty, God?

Not God but certainly a super Jesus (as Dylan Moran might say). Just a great example of a person who puts the work in, doesn't gives excuses and runs smart. Plenty more to come from him too. Just a great attitude.

He's a handy beer miler too. I'll have to watch my back after all his 5,000m training.

Great thread so far! Hope I don't repeat any questions

    1. Have you ever played a valved trombone?
    2. You have a fantastic marathon training block and then a excellent gig opportunity comes your way at the last minute that's clashes with your goal race. What do you do?
    3. Which would be the least bothersome to you, broken arm or broken leg?
    4. Real butter or spreadable straight from the fridge?
    5. Have you ever tried to mix garlic cheese chips with taco chips in the same plate/bowl/trough?
    6. If a tree falls in a forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

How could you forget Karl Henry?! Thanks Murph!

Who had the best brass - Dexy's or The Blades? :)

    Dexy :)

More about the taper please. Why not ease off, even acknowledging what your body is used to? Surely there's a way to refresh the legs and the engine for the big day, i.e. a way that involves running less for a short period?

It's all relative really. Let's take the the traditional 2-week taper for example. I think I peaked at over 100 miles, three weeks out. From here I slashed and burned the miles as I let the demons tell me 'you are tired' etc. I think I ran 55 miles the week after or something. That's too drastic a cut. It's important to gradually reduce the miles, not just put the foot on the brake. The idea is to get right balance of being sharp but rested. I remember the body seizing up the week before Rotterdam last year for that very reason. Balance is key. The taper is where most mistakes are made to be honest. Running less is important but there is a healthy balance to be struck. I just haven't managed it yet.

If you are a first time marathon runner your approach would be very different. Rest, Rest, Rest.

I may get back to that question if I have a bit of time later.

    Coe or Ovett?

    Has to be Coe.

You mentioned you're a music teacher - what's your approach?

I suppose like running, music isn't a 'one size fits all' type of activity. Every child learns at a different rate so you have to be very flexible in your approach and VERY patient! It's an incredibly rewarding job. The most important thing is to give them a love for music and help them to really enjoy their studies. Once you do that you are on the right track.

It's also very important to get the right mix of discipline to create an environment of learning but knowing when to allow the kids a bit of slack. I'm a big softie really.

Karl Henry - never heard of him. Is that some eejit off the telly?

Next to Bressie he's the biggest eejit in Ireland. He's on the show, Operational Transformation. The type of guy who gets morbidly obese people, who haven't exercised in decades, to run on on first week of the schedule. Ridiculous if you ask me!

    He's a Personal Trainer apparently.

Think Pauline Curley flew by in the marathon but other than that no!

I'm not in your league as a runner, but at least we have something in common. If you're going to be chicked, might as well let it be by an Olympian.

    I'm really enjoying this thread.
