Aertel page 448

    Does anyone else remember this?

Just saw a picture on facebook of the aertel homescreen and it brought me straight back.
It was like my first foray into social networking, teens would write letters in and they would be published weekly, people had screen names... I even think a couple of people met through it and were dating. Distinctly remember reading it every Tuesday/ Thursday night while waiting for Boston Public to come on.

    Am I alone?

Is this the golden age "when kids could be kids" that I've been hearing about since I was a child? Sounds sh1te.

I remember page 180 for What's On Now.

And 150 for having to check everyones lotto tickets when I was about 8. Sometimes I just put scratches through the whole lot of them - most boring job ever

239 for the Premier League table :D

Really handy for listings and sports results.
Now you have to search several different websites for information that used to be in one place.

No. It's essentially the RTE website...

I remember page 180 for What's On Now.

And I think it was 182 for a list of movies on today and 183 for a description of them

220 for the soccer news and 200 for sport news. Many a transfer deadline day spent refreshing 220. Crazy times.

Bamboozle on Channel 4 with Bamber, Babette, Buster & Bonnie Boozler was a good one, a daily quiz show & on Saturdays they'd do a junior version. Can't recall the page no. as it switched around a few times.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there some form of typographical XXX content on C4 late at night? Or maybe some crude pics of chicks?

There was a "sex" section on ITV/C4 teletext in early 1993. Dirty stories and sex problem pages etc. It didn't last long though, maybe a couple of months. It was called After Hours and was only available after 11 pm.

I think I was just going into 1st year so it was about 13/14 years ago... Crazy how it just popped into my head tonight. I remember writing a few awkward teenage letters but being so cringed out by them I just threw them in the bin rather than post them :o

I remember the Aertel dating classifieds. Now things have gotten worse with Tinder and all that jazz.

Haven't thought about this in years. Back then, my main sources of TV entertainment were Aertel Teenns' Page and late-night Bravo soft porn.

From what I recall, circa 2000

    Aertel Index: 101
    Main News Heads: 102
    Individual stories: 103
    TV: 170
    RTE: 171 (Network 2: 172, etc)
    What's on Now?: 180
    Movies: 183/4
    Sports index; 200
    Racing: 250
    Entertainment: 300
    Kids (index): 440
    Horoscopes:o: 500
    Some Aertel interactive sh1te: 700
    Subtitles; 888

Anyway, back to the subject at hand. Does anybody remember some convoluted saga about some kid from Florida writing into that Teen Talk page. I was about 13, so it would have been circa 1999. It went on for weeks, if not months. I reckon (in hindsight) it was a total pisstake. Like who writes to Aertel from Florida? Surely you'd have better things to do?

God yea, I used to write in and give out, venting my teenage angst. I also applied to do a book review and they sent me out a beautiful hardback collectors edition of 'The Magicians Nephew'. Still have that on one of my bookshelves.

Celeb birthday page (possibly page 333). Used to try and guess the ages of the celebs with my brother. Also used to check in on the music charts on Aertel.

    Music reviews used be great.

What's in now was the best page ever.

Viewpoint and karma policewoman....my heart just melted a little . I wrote in once, no idea about what. But my name was maleman (so macho) . When people started responding to each other it was insane!!!. Towards the end it was just people writing in bitching about not enough people writing in.

221 for soccer, they used to put any irish players name in green. I also remember checking on ****ty reception and half the page would be blurred or gobbledygook so you'd have to be a detective to figure out the scores.

There used to be a quiz page too. And a jokes page. Loved those.

Karma Policewoman...Christ I totally forgot about that. I wonder who she was.

Some of the letters used to annoy the hell out of me but I still went on to that page everyday....a bit like After Hours I suppose. It was around 1999/2000 .

    I still look at p220.

Once I used my zx spectrum to do a mock up of the Lotto numbers aertel page with the numbers from my Dads lotto ticket on it.
My parents killed me when the 'joke' was revealed.

Itv had a great teletext. Especially for transfer gossip. Call 1500- for more about your club. Is Del Piero coming to Old Trafford?

    Gotta call to find out!

A few months later and I was grounded for a week. 'Are you calling the sex lines?'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭goose1

No idea how to quote but YES to the guy who used to write in to Viewpoint from 'Florida'!!!
Wasn't there some big scandal where eventually Aertel revealed his stamps were in fact from Ireland?:pac:
    And the fall out...!

I e-mailed Viewpoint once or twice but this was well after its glory days....

Gotta miss the golden days of Aertel.
