To be honest if they're not going with the Ghostface killer then why call it Scream? I know they're cashing in on the franchise name but come on with no connection to the original plot or series why bother.

It looks like any generic teenage angst series just with murders.

    Hey kids,

Do you like glossy over-lit sets?
How about attractive women that look like they're barely of age?
    Do you like pop references?

Hey, why not watch MTV's "Scream"? I swear, it won't just be a horrible rehash of a movie series that died a death almost 20 years ago now...

The original was pretty good in fairness. They diluted the brand with crappy sequels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,194 ✭✭✭✭Basq

The original is a classic.. and I didn't even mind Scream 2 (if just for Timothy Olyphant's hilariously OTT performance).

The less said about the rest, the better.

    I actually liked 4.

I think the main connection to the movies will be the fact there are rules.

But I think the trailer actually looks promising. Reminds me of Harper's Island which I was a big fan of. And Teen Wolf convinced me to give this show a chance.

It looks terrible. Also, I have little time for MTV since they cancelled RJ Berger in favour of The Inbetweeners US re-make....

To be honest, it doesn't look to bad. Sure it's glossy, over produced and most likely going to be Gossip Girl with a body count but MTV have shown in the past that they can meld horror with humour, the My Super Psycho Sweet 16 series was decent enough and showed that a willingness by MTV to poke fun at much of their audience. I have no expectations for Scream but it could be the kind of easy to watch fare that's perfectly suited to the summer months.

Is Sidney in this, she should be the killer :p

Neve won't be playing her, anyway.

Nor will David and Courteney be playing Dewey and Gale.

I enjoyed all of the Scream films (except the third one, which I barely remember) especially the first one. Looking forward to this series. It'll be either brilliant or awful, and we'll know which it is after the first episode.

I enjoyed the first film. I thought the second one was okay. The third one infuriated me.

The thing I don't get about this TV series is why they went with a different mask? The original mask was iconic. To not use it seems immensely stupid. Were they not permitted to use it for some reason? I don't get that.

The company that makes the Ghostface mask from the movies put up a statement online months ago saying they weren't even asked to produce masks for the show and that the show wants to go in a different direction.

I can kind of understand it, because if you're having a show with none of the original cast but the same mask, it'll never get a chance to be reviewed on it's own merits it'll always be compared to the original film.

A new mask gives the tv series a chance to go we're different from the movie from the outset. Plus anyone wearing the old mask would be considered a copycat killer, where the new mask allows for a new legacy, new rules, etc.

    I know it's a re-imagining, but even so... :o;)

Anybody seen the film 'Behind the Mask: The rise of Leslie Vernon'? It's a worthy successor to the clever, self referential, deconstruction of the slasher genre that Sream pioneered. Instead of the bunch of teens however it follows a guy who's ambition is to become 'the next Michael Myers' as he meticulously plots, trains and prepares for a killing spree. It would have made for a much better series.

There's a sequel coming out in the next year or so called Before The Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon

It wasn't a bad pilot episode there is enough in it to make me watch the next episode.

    Is this airing in Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Doesn't look like it (for now).

This was better than I thought. I'll watch some more.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,298 ✭✭✭DareGod

    Anyone watch this yet?

It has promise, but it could go either way. First ep was mildly enjoyable but a bit stupid and the characters were all high school cli-chés.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,549 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I liked it, and if they keep it to a single season, Harper's Island/American Horror Story style, then it'll allow them to do a decent show.

Now let's see if they do make us care about the characters as they said they would.

The new Randy seems a bit too forced at the moment. And trying to imply Sin is related to the old serial killer?

Of course they had to get some people who would easily pass for teenagers, like the new guy who looks like he's been repeating for a long time.

that's one of the big difference between British and American tv

    USA: Teenager = late 20's
    UK: Teenager = Teenager

I was impressed with the first episode, looking forwards to seeing where they go from here.

Half way through the pilot and this is one of the most striking episodes of TV in awhile. I went in with zero expectations and thus far it's managed to really impress. The story is interesting and the violence was rather striking in it's simplicity. That directors like Ti West are going to be directing episodes bodes well for the shows future.

Would've been nice if they mentioned Harper's Island (currently airing on CBS Action) as a sample of a slasher tv show

There was also Eye Candy as well.

Also am I the only one who thought the opening kill was better than the opening for Scream 3?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

That was surprisingly good. I have to admit I was guilty of having more or less written it off and saw the pilot as a means to confirm my suspicions.

Was totally wrong though. An engaging and clever pilot that makes me definitely want to keep watching.

Yes I really enjoyed the first episode! Hopefully it doesn't lose pace and goes completely off the rails. The first episode was very grounded and plenty of winks to who are potential killers.

A strong follow up episode for the second episode. I'm really enjoying this.

Think that I may make this and Mr. Robot my day off shows to catch up on. The pilot was really good, shockingly so. I expected utter garbage but was blown away by what I saw.

They're getting a few callbacks in there anyway. When douche jock and doosh jock were walking in to school, doosh reminded me of Matthew Lillard. Obviously podcast lady is Gale.
This episode felt more like the original movie than the pilot, I thought.

As for suspects, the obvious would be douche and doosh. Apart from them it's only Noah(score for him) and new kid, since it seems like a guy. Teacher seems like a red herring/victim.

So the "blood" Noah got on his head last week was the paint?

Wonder will we get Ryan Hardy in to investigate his daughter's murder? Also works as stunt casting for a Friday the 13th callback.

Scream has been renewed for season 2. Which is good news as the first couple of episodes so far have been excellent.

So does anyone wanna give a guess who the killer is???

I haven't seen any of the series yet, the main reason being that I can see no possible way the basic premise could be extended to on ongoing series without having to resort to the kind of rediculous and improbable plotting that shows such as Revenge (originally concieved as a mini series) had to stoop to to keep the show going long after it passed it's natural conclusion. Even the movies died on their arse after the first two, and number two was stretching things at that point by essentially remaking the first film but with standard sequel response of 'bigger and better but essentially the same as the first'.

The reporter (Not Lisa Loeb, as someone elsewhere called her) was being all suspicious this week. What are the odds her father's death is connected to everything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 383 ✭✭ps3lover

Was anyone else totally taken out of the last episode when a character angrily screamed "what the hell"? Considering how worked up this person is and what was happening was so serious, it just felt really strange that he didn't scream "what the ****!". The worst this about something like this being on TV is the limitations.

Enjoyed the first two episodes a good bit, but I've definitely felt the quality's dipped a little from episode three onwards. Some of the acting, I have to say, is quite poor; aside from Bex Taylor-Klaus (Audrey), the standard isn't great, both from the teens (the lads playing Will and Jake, in particular) and even some of the adult actors, like whoever's playing the Sheriff and the Mayor.

Genuinely hoping things will pick up a bit again, and that the series hasn't plateaued already - that would be quite worrying, especially if a second season is in the works. I was never expecting it to match the levels of the film series, but had expectations that it could be a decent little horror show in its own right. At the rate it's going, though, it could end up just being another Harper's Island.

I'm a little surprised by the overwhelmingly-positive response the show has gotten in this thread. I love the Scream films, the first one is one of my favourite films. And I am watching this tv series every week, and enjoying it. But it's fairly trashy and mindless. And that's fine, for what it is. But I don't think it's a good quality show at all. If it wasn't being released under the "Scream" brand name, it really could be just any other crappy teen U.S. show, and I definitely wouldn't be paying it any attention whatsoever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,058 ✭✭✭Unearthly

It sort of reminds me of the Stab 6 (or 7??) parody in Scream 4 with the text messages before kills :D

I'm actually enjoying it. Still not sure who the killer (s) is yet, but it's pointing towards the reporter as one of them. Her dad being Brandon, and last weeks episode attempt to make her look not guilty by being there when Will got attacked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,055 ✭✭✭conorhal

    Well I gave it a shot. Wish I hadn't.

    The acting is uniformly dreadful.

For a bunch of hip, self aware genre kids they sure do an awful lot of really infuriatingly stupid things, like not telling the police anything, going off to investigate on their own or forgetting to mention the little things like 'nobody trust any form of electronic communication, our social media circle has been hacked by a killer'. They are all a serious bunch of numpties in the most annoying 'horror cliché' manner.

As one character hilariously noted in the first episode, 'slasher' is a genre that burns twice as fast and lasts half as long and thus it's ill suited to episodic television. Whoever wrote that winking nod should have realised it wasn't a joke but rather more of a fact.

I just want to put it on the record that I think the killer will turn out to be Emma's mother.

Ive a feeling it will include the writer woman in some form

Yes, I'm guessing she's the love child of Brandon James and Emma's Mam, making her Emma's sister.
