Anyone else think http://www.express.co.uk/sport/horseracing/569858/Tragedy-on-Grand-National-Day-as-horse-Seedling-falls-at-hurdle-and-dies this **** is ridiculous? i dont know much about horse racing but i was watching it today and the only thing i could think of was this **** is retarded, one jocky got absoulely panned out cold after his horse took a tumble over one of many ridiculous 6ft high jumps,

I wouldnt even call it a race because you dont win it you survive it! how they have favorites is beyond me, i dont mind racing asuch but surely certain races need to be rethought as they are just pure blaggarding and dangerous.

Do the owners of the horses themselves not be annoyed when one of there horses gets killed? waste of a good horse on a dumb ass race..

A bunch of horses with little people on their backs run towards a finish line. First one there wins.

If there is even the slightest chance of people trying to enjoy themselves it should be banned

They should make more interesting and give the jockeys swords and/or lances to knock off the other jockeys...then I'd watch it.

It's basically bingo. It's an absurd spectacle. Every year horses die or get seriously hurt on one of those stupidly high hurdles.

People lose their shit whenever there's a mention of bull-running or the like, and always seem happy to hear about someone getting gored or trodden on during it.

I'd imagine you'd get flamed and banned rather quickly if you said you were glad to hear a jockey got killed during the National.

Thats true double standards at its finest !

To make it worse to go with the stupidly high hurdles the race is stupidly long!

They were killed pointlessly tho the race itself is a joke, its stupidly long with stupidly high jumps, there needs to be a point where the courses just become ****in stupid.

Anyway, to give my actual answer on it. I don't like the Grand National races at all as they are crowding the racetrack and the horses are knackered at the end. However there will be casualties at hurdling and flat racing regardless with breakdowns and slips. There's no way to fully remove the chance of injury from racing and despite best intentions there will always be deaths and serious injuries. If you think it's cruel don't watch it, that's the view.

They have adjusted the fences and the likes...there was no horse killed in the national..the horse that died was in a novice hurdle on the same card..horses die every day..its a complete non story and sensationalism by the express

You dont have to know the ins and outs of it to know lots of 6ft high jumps over a long race, dumb as ****.

Eh? Wouldn't all sprot be more interesting with a genuine chance of death. If there was the potential for Wayne Rooney to be shot/blown-up/stabbed I'd be glued the the Football every week or however often they play.

What ever about the flat racing thats grand see which horse is faster but the one with the hurdles i think is just flat out stupid its just asking for a jockey or horse to be killed or badly hurt.

Jockey I don't actually have an issue with, like many sports they have a choice, horses, not so much.

I was just going to comment that it wouldn't be much uin without the horses but the thought of a load of small guys running around a horse racing circuit actually seems like pretty bloody good entertainment to me.

I think if a horse has to be shot after a fall, the jockey should be shot as well.

Just to even it up, like.

Well technically that's not hurdling in the National. There are different types of jump racing, the ditches like that are not in all forms of jump racing.

I blame FF, Enda and the deceased Celtic tiger for all this fun myself.

On the topic itself, I am not a horse racing fan but the grand national really puzzles me. I know people who own race horses and it costs them an absolute fortune. Why they enter them into races like the grand national which can potentially cause serious harm to their horse is beyond me. It has something to do with the thrill of racing apparently.

    Horse racing is pot luck.

I laugh when i hear people say there have a 'tip' for a horse. I swear the betting shops just make them up to get people to bet.

It's a fantastic spectacle - watching some of the world's greatest horses and bravest jockeys compete over an extremely challenging course. Of course it is. Not to everyone, but to a huge number of people.
Nobody wants to see a horse or jockey die. Especially those closest to them. The horses are bred to race and are treated like royalty. If every human was treated as well as those horses the world would be a different place.

A very rare horse comes to grief. Very rare. Horses die racing. Horses die showjumping. Horses die in the wild. Racing pigeons die. Sporting dogs die. I think if animals are involved with sport there is some danger.

Some will say it's a disgrace. Some will say it while they chew on a dead pig, chicken or cow. Different opinions.

I just don't get it, find it extremely boring. But then I don't enjoy gambling, get no buzz out of it whatsoever. Which is just as well as I understand all the other vices intimately. If the gambling aspect was removed from horse racing, how popular would the sport be?

Animals die yes, but the hurdles are just an unnecessary increase in the potential of either the animal or jockey getting ****ed up.

I bet yeah if they got rid of them races in the morning it wouldnt effect the horse racing industry in the slightest people would as soon go to watch a normal race.

People die in car crashes all the time, should it be ok to drink drive too since car crashes happen regardless?

Id happily take that bet, the horse racing industry would survive handily with out them, the majority of people would back two flys goin up a wall its more about the gambling than racing most of the time.

It's nothing short of a small miracle that none have been killed for the last 3 years considering the amount of very heavy fallers there have been in that time.

There were more horses pulled up or that fell today than there were finishers, which is ridiculous for an event that claims to be for the most elite of horses and jockeys.

Imagine that was the case in any other racing sport. That at the very top level, less than half of participants were expected to even finish a race!

Unfortunately when a horse breaks a leg it has to be put down. I don't have any beef really with horse racing but I do think they have too many runners in the grand national.

There are twoforms of commercial horse racing

National hunt and flat racing. Some horses/sires are aimed towards flat, other towards NH

You cannot simply remove NH and expect the industry to survive. Its not remotely possible

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,898 ✭✭✭✭Ken.

Thing is if all horse sport everywhere was banned tomorrow the horse would probably be on an endangered list in about 30-40 years. About 1% of horse owners keep them as pets. I doubt J. P. McManus wants 200 pet horses that cost a fortune to feed and mind without some sort of return.

Anything that makes as much money as horse racing would not collapse to change, it would adapt that i guarantee you

I mean you re saying that betting isnt a main motive for watching horse racing but take out that incentive and all you have is a bunch of people watching horses run around a field.
