The Gay Gene

I read somewhere that the gay gene would be wiped out if homosexuality wasn't as taboo as it is in society because gay people would be openly gay and could obviously not pass on their genes through procreation.

Is this a load of rubbish?I am interested in how homosexuality is present in both animals and humans as it doesn't seem to fit in with evolution and adoption to survive.

Note: This is not a homophobic thread, Purely science point of views.

It's not genetic. I'm straight, my husband is straight and we have a gay child

It could have skipped a few generations.

Or your husband may be secretly gay and is not willing to come out in today's society.

Lol gay gene, heard it all now.

I'm straight but I am actually looking forward to the day nobody has to "come out", when it is as widely accepted and nobody looks twice at it as is the norm with straight couples.

Why would anyone choose to bring that hassle on themselves at 15 / 16? (especially in past times)

(what is the topic of this thread?)

Is sexual preference not something you are born with?

    I am here to learn.

There is a state of the art laboratory in the iona institute dedicated to identifying and eradicating this gene. They are currently trialing an experimental drug with a view to eradicating this debilitating condition by 2025.

There may be a genetic link.

    http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn26572-largest-study-of-gay-brothers-homes-in-on-gay-genes.html#.VSg3nop4WJI

However gentetic mutations happen all the time and also if it is a genetic link a straight man may for example have a recessive gene that may not result in a gay child.

I have no idea, but the logic was wrong, A child can show traits that the parents don't show. The Parents can pass on their own recessive genes to this child.

i.e. 2 Brown eyed parents can have a blue eyed child

Yes but that is taking into account only one generation!

I am talking about millions of years of evolution. Would the homosexuality gene not die out after a certain amount of time with only heterosexual breeding?

Until a decade ago homosexuality was assumed nurture or there was a continium between gay and straight. I'd say it's part nurture part genes.

So why is everyone incredulous at my stupidity for suggesting a gay gene?

But you are using it as an argument that homosexuality is not passed down through genes?

Or am I misinterpreting your posts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭smellslikeshoes

There's something called the "gay uncle" hypothesis which suggests that having childless adults in the family improves the odds of children in family surviving. So even though the gay family member aren't likely to reproduce themselves the children of other members of the family continue the genetic line.

I think you are, Someone said in an earlier post they have a gay child but both parents were straight.

I meant, It could still be Genetic and the gay gene could be recessive.

But all I can do is guess, I have done no research :P:D

If there was a gay gene would it be moral to remove it, given the choice?

Talking about it makes you a monster.

His posts make seem perfectly logical to me.

I think what the OP is asking is if homosexuality is genetic was the traditional taboo on homosexuality that existed to varying degrees in some cultures and still exists in many cultures one of the key factors in said gene being passed down in that homosexuals embarked on heterosexual relationships and had families in order to "fit in".

Not being schooled in genetics, I don't know.

But it seems a reasonable question to me, not remotely homophobic and unworthy of the unthinking condemnation it's already gotten from a few worthies eager to display how wonderfully tolerant they are. By being utterly intolerant of an innocent query.

Morally it should absolutely not be removed.

I am talking about evolutions tendency to remove factors that does not contribute to the continuation of the species.

It sounds very bad but I am not homophobic, just have an interest.

Also wondering, does homosexuality in animals mean that homosexual animals still procreate as usual?

Could it happen if there was a gay gene found? Potentially, yes.

Will it happen? Nope. Bare in mind that homosexual couples can still pass on genes.

Pass on genes through copulation with another person of the opposite sex though?

Which if they were open homosexual they would not participate in.So he could they pass on their genes?

The same way some openly gay couples are doing, by using donors for the lacking gamete

I guess it comes down to how much of an issue a gay child would be to a parent. I'd like to think most wouldn't care.

Yes he is trying to imply I was homophobic in my original post when I just interested in the science of it.

My own primitive understanding of genetics would suggest the gene could be present in a homosexual's straight brothers and sisters and get passed on that way. You can carry genes without possessing the characteristics of said genes.

If there is such a thing as a gay gene it mutated from a straight originally presumably, why would it not continue to do so?

You think all gay people in the world were born of a gay mother or father? Lol no. If that were the case gay teenagers would be able to come out and parents would be okay with it, gay parents are hardly going to punish or disown their children for being gay?

Yes some gay people marry the opposite gender and have children, but many of them have straight children. And many completely straight couples have gay children.

Homosexuality is thought to be inherited, but homosexuals are no more likely to pass on the gene to children than straight people.

Exactly, same way red hair came about. It's a mutation of blonde hair. It just was able to be passed on.

Often the most virulently homophobic people are themselves self-repressed homosexuals.

Surrogacy. Lesbians can get sperm donations.

I'm not sure I follow but OK.

On a side note, when they say that redheads are dying out, surely the same could happen to the homosexual gene?
