Woman delighted for 7th child to be girl - VIDEO

A video of an American woman screaming with joy at the news her seventh child will be a girl - after six boys - has been viewed over a million times, as of 10th April.

The headline on The Huffington Post website read "Mom Of 6 Boys Loses Her Mind When She Learns She's Having A Girl".

I think it should read "Woman In 2015 Gives Less Than A Sh-t About Her Carbon Footprint".

This is confusing to me. I though there was already a medical procedure in place that can determine the sex of a baby. A mother could decide whether to have a girl or boy

You can use fertility treatment to determine which embryos are implanted, but that is expensive enough.

Woman excited when she discovers the sex of baby - not sure what the big deal is or what the carbon footprint thing is about?

Would that not be very costly?

I just looked it up, it can cost over $20,000 apparently and you have to go through fertility treatment to do it.

I thought it was possible to sort the sperm into X and Y and then use that to select a gender

no idea how much its costs

As far as I know, en egg has be fertilized before sex can be determined. So embryos have to be created and then tested to see what sex they are. Could be wrong though.

Sperm is either X or Y. An egg is always X.

XX makes a girl, XY makes a boy.

Have you learnt nothing from After Hours?

Babies do not come from cakes.

Yes, I just didn't think they had a very reliable way to test sperm. The IVF method is over 99% accurate.

Some countries don't allow for gender selection. I remember watching a documentary about it a while ago, and a woman in the UK who wanted it done had to go to Hungary or some place to get it.

    Jumper cake?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 415 ✭✭Alexis Sanchez

How does a slice of cake determine the sex of the child?

    Edit*

Saw this in the comments section:
So the doctor wrote down the gender on the envelope, the friend who shot the video went to doc office and got the envelope, came back to my house to open it(I had cake batter waiting to be dyed the correct color) we opened the envelope together, i put the dye in the cake and we had a party that night for the family and friends to see what it was. Stacy and myself just had to keep a straight face so we wouldn't give away this huge secret :-)

Can you get one of these pregnancy test cakes in a chemist? Can you still eat it after you piss on it?

More parents putting videos up on the www. Why?

I hope the 6 boys will be equally happy with the publication and the implication that the news of their gender may not have been greeted so warmly.

More magical than having a son?
    Why is that?

Are girls more prized or is it the mothers narcissism?

I have a friend with 7 children and she's 27!! She has absolutely no shame when people openly ask her why she has/wants so many. I've stayed with her a few times and honest to god it's like being in a creche. I do be DYING to get home asap haha. I have no children so it's hard for me to cope around SEVEN!! Their ages range from 1 to 9 so imagine how mental her house is! It personally wouldn't be for me, I struggle to imagine myself with one child never mind 7 :D

My mom had no problem telling us she wanted my brother to be a girl so our sister wouldn't be an only girl.

Gender selection is illegal in a lot of countries, so anyone who wants to go down that road will likely have to travel, undergo gruelling fertility treatment, and have a spare €10,000 knocking about to ensure you got a couple of goes at it. Other countries will do it in limited circumstances I think, but only if there is a proven genetic reason - eg you have a serious and life threatening genetic illness that would only manifest in a particular gender. Off the top of my head, Belgium and Czech Rep. offer it for genetic reasons, and I think Hungary and a couple more eastern European countries do.

Imagine how it makes the boys after the first one feel, that they were basically unwanted and were just a means to an end.

What are ye on about? Talk about reading waaaaaaaaaay too much into what she said.

Have you never met a parent who's expressed a passing preference for a specific gender for their child? Never met a man who'd like a son?

I'd like to have a little boy but my boyfriend wants a little girl. No worries. We'll both love that child regardless of gender once they arrive.

I'm assuming after 6 guys, a girl would make a pleasant surprise. I'm assuming the same would be the case after 6 girls.

Talk about scraping the barrel of victimhood there.

    Not a fundie is she?

Tbh, when I see large families like that I think its selfish - there are too many to manage all at once and invariably the older siblings are the ones doing the actual parenting and constantly having to mind their little siblings and having no life themselves. The Duggars in the US have about 19 or 20 kids now. The mother literally does six months with the baby, then hands them over to a sibling in order to presumably work on getting knocked up again.

Fair enough, have as many kids as you like, but don't farm them out to your other kids to rear for you.

Maybe she really really cares about her carbon footprint, but is caught up in the "no point doing anything cos China and sh1t" so they're breeding a clan who will all also breed clans and vs an unstoppable force when Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" becomes reality.
