Sue Perkins to present Top Gear?

Sue Perkins, presenter of the Great British Bake Off, is rumoured to be taking over Top Gear when it returns to air.

I've never watched Top Gear, but I might start watching it now.

Just so I can have some context when social media has a meltdown on the day the first episode is aired.

In all seriousness, if Perkins is offered the job, I think it would be a bold move on the part of the BBC. Taking a show which is so male-dominated and putting not only a woman at the centre, but a gay woman - I have to say, hats off.

If there are sexist and homophobic people who watch Top Gear (and with a viewership of 350 million a week, there has to be), it's one way of challenging their prejudices.

I tell you what if Katie Hopkins was presenting it I'd give it a watch just on the off chance that she'd go through the windscreen once soon after declaring that only fat ugly people wear seatbelts.

Fooking hilarious, would be a great replacement for Clarky in all honesty.

Sabine Schmitz would be one of the top contenders for the show at the moment and would have the added bonus of actually being a racing driver...

I like Sue Perkins and do find her funny but she is not a good fit for Top Gear. Jodie Kidd on the other hand ...

I thought that but she's not really 'senior' enough, she's also German which might not go across too well in the UK. Lesbians are one thing, Germans quite another! :pac:

I'd happily watch a Great British Bake off, Top Gear cross over.

Every week the Stig prepares a seasonal cake in the shape of a famous racetrack while Mary Berry must drive through the Australian Outback in a newly restored Vintage Land Rover.

    Quality Television!

they could still have her as one of the presenters, not necessarily the main one. There was talk a few years ago of her getting a role on the show but it never materialised.

I just can't see the trio TBH, but it does look like they'll be a bigger revamp.

I joked that they should maybe give Angus Deayton a shot! :pac:

They can't try and replicate the tone of Top Gear with Clarkson so they will more probably go the opposite direction and appoint a comedian (preferably female, so they can address the sexism arguement) who doesnt really know much about cars.
Reminds me of how they replaced Jonathan Ross on Film 20xx with Claudia Winkleman, even though she couldnt critique a film if her life depended on it.

Well that's the end of Top Gear then. Hopefully Clarkson, Hammond and May will hook up again with an alternative.

Im sure ITV or Sky will snap them up!

Clarkson is top gear and it only works with its current format with him James and Hammond.

Ever seen the amercian version? enough said.

yeah the american version is rubbish. they try to make it about the cars. I cant see sky picking them up, especially not after they sacked andy gray and richard keys.

Feminist crap its a male show marketed towards males,Sticking Sue Perkins on the show is as silly as releasing a line of tampons for men.

....Sabine on the other hand transcends this PC rubbish and deserve a place on the show on her own merits.

Everyone who is not dead (and possibly one or two who are) will be linked with Top Gear Mk 3

Alexis Sayle wrote his pitch to present in the Guardian last week - I think he put forward a compelling case myself - Lenin of the Solihull Rovers

Meh, they could give the job to less funny and more annoying people.

Hasn't Perkins done a couple of car/driving related shows for the BBC before?

i think they should just stick to the travelogues. they've been the best bits of the last few seasons.

Jodie Kidd on the other hand ...
While she is a bit of a petrol head, her presenting skills are dire. Try watching an episode of the"Classic Car Show" on Channel 5 ... it's positively cringe worthy, especially as her co-host is Quentin Wilson.

Clarkson pissed a load of people off, and it seems Perkins is already pissing a load of people off. It's magic.

If top gear comes back there will definitely be a woman presenter. It's BBC policy now isn't it?

It needs someone with an interesting history of cars they have owned or else someone with motorsport experience, nobody else is really going to cut it on the challenges and laps around the track testing cars. It's in danger of having people who like cars solely based on their colour or miles per gallon.

Top Gear as we've known it for the last decade or so is dead.

It reinvented itself as something totally different before so can probably do so again, but the three buddy format is dead.

Sure does anyone remember the first season of "new" Top Gear with that Jason fella instead of May? It took a few seasons to find itself.

I reckon Clarkson/May/Hammond will pop up on Netflix or similar.

Well done for what? The target market was car enthusiasts and that has been since time immemorial predominantly men, and people tend to like to associate or watch things they like, and so unless there is a huge untapped market for a women-focussed show, I imagine it will have a trickle of viewers.

Why does everything have to be sexualised like this, it is sad TBH. Is there so much insecurity in the feminist or gay communities? The world does not revolve around sexuality or gender issues, but making everything do, becomes a real bore. Which is exactly what such a show would be.

    Give Connor Daniels the job...http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/cops-collar-prolific-joyriders-after-5218806

Good at what he does & would now become gainfully employed...win/win :D

Jason Dawe that was, I was watching TG on Dave and Clarkson was doing an actual review of a standard readily available car - Alfa 166. I was shocked! I was shocked at how he has aged rather dramatically over the last decade

Is she any use with the aul sly digs about asians and general mockery of non-british subjects or will she get some sort of handover from Herr Clarkson?

Boy I sure am a dullard, thank the gods someone will enlighten and turn me back to the light. Because we all know that's what people tune into Top Gear for, to feel the warmth of a correction facility, that indoctrinates me back to the light

Just as well, I was so afraid that I'd gone off the path of righteousness. Just in time. Just in time.

Well there was that incident in 2013 where she & Mary Berry got absolutely sh*t faced one night down Soho & racially abused an afro-caribbean beggar before violently assaulting him.

Sue Perkins... hmmm... I don't know. She's quite good in some contexts and has been known to make me laugh, but gawd is she ever smug.

If going for a female presenter, I think Victoria Coren would be a good choice.

The thinking man's totty as they say over there. I like watching some of the awkward nerdy types on Only Connect being excited to be so close to a real life witty lady.

They could steal Rachel Riley from The Gadget Show on Five either. More Rachel can only be a good thing.

Coren is infinitely more up herself than Perkins is!

A woman is going to get the job of presenting a show aimed predominately at men mostly because she is a woman. Similar to how in the next election we will have an opportunity to vote for candidates that were nominated mostly for being women.

    Welcome to equality, people.

Winkleman was asked by the BFI to list her ten favourite films, and chose quite high-brow films like Shoah and The Battle of Algiers.

I don't think it's fair to question her knowledge of film.

I never watched Film 20xx, so I can't speak to her reviewing style.
