My hamstring often gives me trouble when I start to introduce speed a few easy
runs usually sorts it out, make sure you are keeping well hydrated as that can affect hamstrings. You should try some deep heat or tiger balm to keep muscle
warm, bridges work really well for rehab, start with two leg and move onto one leg once comfortable on two. Another exercise I got was lying on floor with heals
resting on a chair and slowly raise your bottom from ground. Best luck, hope settles soon.

Hope the injury isn't to bad, make sure your 100% before running again on it.

Thanks folks. I'm hoping it's not as bad as I initially feared.

I was walking okay again on Wednesday, and despite repeatedly telling myself it was a bad idea, I went for another test run last night. I just did a couple of laps near home and said I'd stop straight away if there was any pain at all, but I got through it okay. The area still feels weak, and I definitely wouldn't have got away with anything other than very easy running, but it's something anyway.

I'll rest it again today, and might do a similar run tomorrow if it still feels okay. I know I have more to lose than to gain here, and a 40 minute run every other today is hardly going to maintain any fitness, but my sanity is at stake. Wednesday seems like a very long way off before the physio can see me!

    + 1 to this.
Take it very easy till you see the physio.

No run since last Thursday. Even though that one went fine, I've become completely paranoid that I'm going to make things worse if I do any more running. So I went for a long walk on Saturday instead, and wore a pair of hip and trendy Vans that I don't normally wear. The long and short of this is that they sliced the heels off me, and I could barely walk at all after half an hour.

It was so bad I had to duck into a shop to buy a new pair of shoes - they're horrible looking things, but very comfortable. I think it's the first time I've deliberately bought a pair of sensible shoes. I brought the hip and trendy ones to a charity shop, and left them there along with the last vestiges of my youth. I should probably look into buying a pair of slippers and a pipe this week.

The hamstring is fine. Might try another short run this evening.

Since it was only going to be another of couple of days off, I decided against running again till I saw the physio. So I turned up on Wednesday, only to be told that they had no record of my appointment. At that stage I wasn't even annoyed; it just seems to be the way things are going lately. Made a new appointment for next Tuesday.

Went out for a short run last night anyway, as I'm achieving nothing just sitting around feeling sorry for myself. Hamstring seems okay, but still feels like it won't hold up to anything other than easy running. Hopefully I'll find out on Tuesday if this is just a mental thing.

The rest of the run was the usual miserable slog after a break, but it's a starting point anyway.

    Well March was a disaster.

But I've made out a rough plan for the next few months, assuming I can start getting back into things properly over the next few weeks. Going to target a 10k in June, and hopefully pick up the 5k PB I feel I just missed out on along the way.

Very quiet here, how's the hamstring holding up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,911 ✭✭✭tailgunner

The hamstring is okay, thanks. The physio couldn't find much wrong with it, but that was nearly three weeks after I injured it in the first place, so I'd say it probably sorted itself out in the meantime.

Just as I was getting back into things though, I managed to injure my foot. Nothing to do with the hamstring, as it's the other leg. I was at a wedding in Killarney the weekend before Easter, and went for a run around Muckross House the following day. My foot felt a bit sore, which I put down to wearing fancy shoes and throwing shapes on the dance floor, and I didn't really think much more of it. But by the evening, I couldn't put weight on it, and it was like that for days.

So not much running going on lately - I think I've managed about 25 miles so far for April. The foot feels okay since the weekend, so I'll try a test run tonight and then take it from there. I've no races on the horizon, so I'm in no rush getting back into things.

    Another disastrous month.

I want to have a really good crack at a half marathon in October, so I'll do a 12 week plan for that, starting in July, and just work on base-building in the meantime.

There are a couple of shorter races I want to do over the next few months too to keep me ticking over. Onwards and upwards!

Quick catch-up for the sake of it. My running is gone to ****e basically. I'm getting out when it suits me, but any excuse at all and I just don't seem to bother. Maybe logging the little I have done might spur me on a bit...

Over a week since the last run, as I was away in Madrid for a few days and didn't bother bringing the runners. Like I said, any excuse will do. Felt nice and easy, and I wouldn't have known I'd missed a week.

I think I was attempting a bit of a progression run here - a couple of miles near the end were a bit quicker anyway, but nothing crazy. Legs felt good, so at least I'm sorted in terms of niggles etc.

Had to go to London for a training course for the week, so this was around where I was staying near Tower Bridge. Absolute nightmare of a run. Horribly windy, wet, humid, and I could barely move for people. I hate London.

After that, I didn't run again for the rest of the week, which is fairly pathetic. And I didn't run for the weekend either even though I was back home...

I think part of the problem (the other part being laziness) is that I have no target race coming up. I have a bit of upheaval on the horizon (all positive stuff) that means I can't really commit to anything for a few months, so my original plan to do the Oxford half marathon in October is out unfortunately.

So I guess I'll just keep tipping away when I can and hopefully will get back to some consistency sooner rather than later. I'll keep logging anyway.

There are runners hoping to overtake you on the 1000miles sheet, if that spurs you on? ;). Sign up for a race! 30miles for the week not bad though ....

That sheet is the only thing keeping me going! I was delighted to break 400 miles there recently, then spotted Ososlo had broken 2000, which brought me crashing back down to earth...

I hear ya! Try just comparing yourself to yourself though, last years mileage v this years etc etc :)

Could you target something sooner like an 6 week or an 8 week plan?

yes as AgyR suggests or follow a 5k training plan and target a Parkrun. It doesn't have to be a major race you target, just whatever gets you out the door, or try a run streak!!;) got me out the door on many an occasion when i would have just vegged on the sofa!!!

I don't think I could face 5k training at the moment. I'm still feeling burned by the 8-10 weeks of decent training for a race at the start of the year that only led to injury and getting the hump.

But yeah, I definitely have to target something, as I'm getting nowhere at the moment. I'll have a better idea about what to target in a couple of weeks hopefully.

If only I could channel my obvious talents for excuses and general whinging into my running somehow!

Sometimes it helps to just go back to basics and run for the reasons we started to run in the first place . I know I've gone through a similar phase to what you discribed above at the end of last year and into this year .

A few weeks just running for the enjoyment of it helped regain focus on longer term plans.

Completely agree with this. I was beating myself up for ages about not running enough, not following plans etc... and it was counterproductive... finally decided to take it a week at a time and not fret about it... I'm more zen like about it now :D

Selfishly, I'd like to see you back racing for the entertaining race reports :p

Thanks for all the advice. I think a few weeks of running purely for the enjoyment of it is probably the best course of action.

Have noticed you "thanking" around the place a bit.

How you getting on with the 1000miles for 2017?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,911 ✭✭✭tailgunner

I didn't realise it was so long since my last post! Yeah running took a back seat there for a good while. I barely ran at all in June and July, so I've been training vicariously through the logs here instead.

I've been trying to get back into it this month. Only getting out 3 or 4 times a week and I haven't ventured farther than 8 miles yet, but it's already the most I've run in nearly 6 months.

I got engaged last month and we're moving back to Cork in a couple of weeks, so I'll start into a proper plan once I'm back and have a bit more time on my hands. And (getting ahead of myself a bit), I'm aiming to do the Waterford AC Half in December if I'm in any sort of shape for it.

As for the 1000 miles for 2017, I'm about halfway there...
