Think the description is a wee bit of an understatement

I saw that GS on DD last night - it's a beaut for sure, very rare sight these days. personally I love the interior..
in other news, I saw this also and thought of Duke :)
I wouldn't class it as a 'classic', and the NCT was up in Jan 17..
Advertised at €1k, or €1.5 with a fresh Cert

Identical to one I had years ago - I didn't pay that kind of money for it though!

You sir might like this, your old 190!

To me they ruin the design aesthetic of the car - a bit like dressing a classy older lady in fishnets and thigh boots, but everyone to their own!

I'd say that won't be for sale for long if the description is right, they have a big following.

I kind of like the wheels and furthermore all the classy older ladies I know chose their own outfits! :pac:

I'm thinking of putting mine up for sale in the next month or so. I'm not using it at all really, which is a shame. Much more desirable 190E 2.6 straight 6 cylinder petrol auto though, '87 so with the very cheap tax (€56) and insurance (€100). NCT + tax till October 2018. All electric windows work, electric sunroof works, central locking works, has ABS too! Interior is in amazing condition.

What kinda asking price should I be looking for, anyone knows?

Diesel BMW cortina was on the market for ages a a higher price , if you got it for 3 k I don't think it would ever depreciate,

Gave him a call. Odometer isn't working and he doesn't know mileage. I'm not sure if it reads how fast the car is actually going either. There's a little surface rust on the roof about the size of a toe but he said that's it. He wouldn't go anywhere near 3K for it though!

    Elephant toe? Camel toe? :pac:

Pretty sure I spotted that Cortina on the M50 yesterday.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,790 ✭✭✭✭cormie

That's what he said, human toe I think :D It's kept around Crumlin.

I'm guessing they don't lose their value much and I could sell it on for close to what's paid for it.

Checkout your insurance first. Heavily modified, not every insurance company will insure it for reasonable money as a classic and that's a bit of an understatement :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,418 ✭✭✭tc20

Ahh Duke - don't be doing this to me :D
Price is going north on it - I think I sold it for around €1300 a couple fo years back now- pretty much what I paid for it. That's the 3rd owner after me now. Looks like someone attempted de-badging the "1.8" from the bootlid, and the MB Tex is still in good nick, though it's nigh on indestructible anyway that stuff!
No mention of it being done, but the rear suspension would need an overhaul if someone's planning on keeping it longterm.

    thanks for the spot!

That's the first thing that came into my head. Most will just report spec according to the logbook....all great until something happens.

The guy said his insurance was €140 for the year which sounds decent, I wonder if it's down as being modified. I would have thought classic insurers would be a little more lenient given the age of the vehicles and likelihood of replacement parts not matching original..

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,074 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

I highly doubt the extent of the modifications have been revealed to the insurance company. Not for a €140 p/a premium!

Its a cool car but could very easily become a massive headache. The running gear transplant was no doubt a very complex job with lots of custom work, this can be a nightmare down the line for new owners who aren't familiar with the work or set up. I don't want to put the car down, as I said its really cool, but I'd walk.

Whats your budget/criteria? We're a helpful bunch :pac:

    If only :(

In my experience vehicles that have received heavy modification (recent not period) are a bit of a white elephant. People like them for their novelty value but very few would be willing to shell out decent money on them, hence why any such old car languishes on Donedeal for months on end. The pool of actual buyers for one is extremely small, in comparison to the pool of buyers for that car if it was completely standard.

Of course there is also the aforementioned grey area of insurance and the inevitable technical issues to put people off.

My classic insurer, or in fact a broker, First Ireland (probably the biggest classic insurer in the country) wants nothing to do with modifications afaik.

I can't really see the benefits of the modifications on that car. I'd much prefer it to be original. It might be cheaper with the diesel for a car doing high annual mileage. And for performance stats, but it's bad for everything else.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,593 ✭✭✭emeldc

I like the old corrina but i think thats s dreadful looking heap.

Brilliant - you just know that’s some oul fella that loved his van. “Engine not running at present” Bet if you went to see that, it would be EXACTLY as the ad describes it.
