Did you ever sell your 190 unkel?

No the DD ad expired a couple of months ago and I have not re-advertised. I had paid the motor tax on the Porsche for a full year last year but that expired last week. I've declared it off the road and I'm keeping the Mercedes for now. It is just in such a good condition and it is wonderful and relaxing to drive - sedately of course :)

Maybe I should just sell the Porsche. I know I will come to regret that though. But I've only taken it out for a proper spin up the mountains I think twice in the last year. Have also spent a fair bit of money on it over the last few years, but I guess that's what happens when a car gets to be 20 years old. I'm not considering putting it in long term storage as the costs are too high at what, €40 a month minimum?

Hmm. I only saw it once and it looked a nice example certainly, is a Boxster really the kind of car that would benefit from long term storage? Enjoy it while you have it IMO. My father recently bought a nearly entirely mint 1982 924 and he is loving every minute of it. It is handling daily transportation duties just fine! As an aside there was a lovely looking 1997 Boxster on donedeal not too long ago, original Irish car, claimed to be mint, for 4950. Was tempted to go and see it but the seller of the 924 accepted a very good offer (via text!) and we went and viewed & shook hands on that the same evening.

You saw my Boxster? Where was that? :)

Yes it is a good example indeed. Ken Bolger has looked after it for about 10 years now. In fact once I put it back on the road, I must get him to service it again.

Hah! I should be more specific. I saw photos of it only once, silver with the 924/44-esque black decal. It looked very well.

After a spirited drive very early on a Saturday morning in the mountains. About to start my hike!

Yeah I saw that earlier. Looks great but "Girlfriend says either the car leaves or she leaves cause I devote more time and money to the car than to her."

Really? You are so dedicated to the car that you ignore your girlfriend? Yet you never even got your car tested, so it's illegal on the road? I don't buy that story.

I assumed this was the same car I see every day dropping kids off at my own kids' school. There's a family using an identical one every day around SC Dublin.

Must be a different one if the girlfriend story is to be believed. :P

Can anyone explain the w124 market to me. I dont get why the 1997 cabrio he has is worth 3 times the price of the coupe? I'm not saying I dont see value in them, I just dont get the premium in the model as a whole (saloon / estate / coupe / cabrio) when they are probably one of the most common classics all over Europe. Obviously they are well built, good looking cars which is why there's demand, I just dont get why (in some cases) they're worth way more than a W126, e23, e32, e34, e36 etc. (deliberately leaving out e30) when the supply is higher than any of those models?

Coupes in Germany start at 6000 or so, you'll get one for a lot less here.
Drop top 124's are rare, but as the old saying goes, " Theres asking, and getting"
Models on sale in specialist garages at £20,000+ seem like mad money to me...

If you lok at the navy Merc in SC Dublin, it has a very specific reg - like 82 D 120000 - so that's not it, also the one that has the 82 D 120000 lives at Phoenix Terrace opposite Blackrockrock Clinic.

I have it there now you mention it.

It must be the evil twin on the one in the ad.

No ABS on that car! The centre console isn't sitting right! Deanes stuff is usually quite good.

Im a die hard 124 fan and I don't get the premium prices being asked for the cabrios either. I have a W126 as well and I don't get the low prices they command either. Early 124 saloon and estate prices will start to go through the roof soon as more get to 30 years old. Any made after 1991 will not as the quality is generally rubbish. The Germans know their classics and they know their W124's and the parts supply is good so they will live on. They are modern, safe and good to drive as an everyday car.

The BMW cars you mention ............. well they're just BMW's ;)

The 124 ce I bough a few weeks ago drove superbly, the only problem seemed to be a low idle that could let it stall when you lift off the trottle at roundabouts etc.
Away to get that sorted, plus a general service, has revealed quite a lot more to be done than I expected!
Rear bushings, front ball joints, several brake pipes both steel and flexible, steering idler, etc.

PS, re that white ce, I hadn't realised coupes could be got with wind up rear windows?
Hard to "look cool" driving around with all the glass dropped if you have to get out and wind down the rears manually!

W124 Convertible here for €5,500 which is very cheap, went through the NCT last week, valid until 08/20. I don't like the seats, but would live with them, steering wheel needs to be replaced.

This price surely can't be right? Even if you did a full overhaul of the brakes and upgraded them to modern ones, it's still very cheap for €7,000.

Looks like the guy who re-upholstered it had a go at the steering wheel. You'd probably get away with removing the leather.

The Jag is a 2.4, considered less desirable but grand for most vintage driving. If the body is good the brakes wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Now that's a bit harsh. The Cinquecento was the cheapest car on the Irish market back in the mid 90s with FIAT's "open plan" pricing. The Sporting probably the cheapest sporty (ish) car you could buy

An incredibly cheap car (yes incredibly basic too, unless you are as old as me and you remember the original 500 / 600 and even Panda?) that was fun to drive too. Personally I couldn't find a good driving position in one. It somehow was all wrong for me, but I'm a fairly big lad. That was all sorted in the Seicento though. A worthy successor.
