So about 8 months ago I got a new VW Golf 1.4 (150bhp) mk7 Highline. Now its a lovely car, drives great and very comfortable. The only problem is that its super boring. I believe the car is worth around 23K now. So Im wondering if I should trade it in for a an older but better car. Something like A5 or Audi TT. Im in my 30's, single and earn ok leaving. I figure this might be the one time on my life to get a fast and fun car. Any thoughts for my first world problems :)

I think you'll find its called a "Mid Life Crisis" By all means if you can afford to take the hit on the cars value, go right ahead.. Its your money after all. The A5 and TT are both fine cars and should keep you happy for a while, but if your like myself and a lot of other people I know, youll soon grow tired of the new car too and be back at square one again.

For this very reason, Ive never bought a new car as it'd kill me to take a loss on one.

A5 and TT don't equal fast! I can imagine the TT being fun tho!

23k I'd be looking at a focus rs or the likes.

A decent MK6 GTI should be in your budget, if you can find one.

Fast fun fwd - Megane RS250 Savage car not to pricey in the uk if you bring one in

Fast fun rwd - Toyota GT86 but maybe out of your price range, Or a Bmw M3 E46

Fast Fun 4wd - I'd either go with a Evo, Wrx Sti, Or a RS4

What did you have before it?
And whats your definition of boring, how it is to drive, or the interior/exterior styling, or is it something else?

If trying to trade it in for an older car then expect not to get the full market value for it. Garages are in the business of making money so expect a lower trade in price if they are interested in that sort of deal at all. Better off trying to sell the Golf privately or trade it in against something with a higher market value.

    Local garage has a 00 RS4, its .... amazing .... 19k

LOL at the RS4 suggestions. The running costs would have him begging for his Golf back ;)

    A TT is a golf

Buy a crap little old mx5. Keep your car, save your money and have a REAL drivers car. So much fun on Sundays.

Don't worry about fuel costs if you're having a mid life crisis :pac:

    +1 on the midlife crisis

Get a wife and kids and then you have the excuse for the 2nd childhood, train sets, scalextric, radio control aeroplanes, nappies, teething, headaches...........

I think if you were in a position getting something like an mx5 or rs2000 etc etc as a weekend car would be a great idea. Granted it will cost you more in running costs but it's best of both worlds. Drive the weekend car around and then when you are sick of it get back into your comfortable quite golf. Otherwise you will take a massive hit on the golf only for it to be replaced with something fun that you may well regret be sick of after 2 months.

Feck it and get an RS4, you won't be bored in 2 months I can guarantee that, broke, but not bored! :p

Should pick up a 07 one for about the value of the Golf.

    get a corvette C6 Z06 or C7

The price of a set of front discs and pads for an RS4 may need to be discussed here.

About 1400 fitted if I recall correctly.

I said it already but WTF, come on lads, let's be realistic. For a guy who's a bit bored with his new Golf, a 7-8 year old Audi RS4 isn't remotely on planet realistic. He'd insure, tax, replace the tyres, service the Golf for the cost of those discs and pads ;) A 19k RS4 needs to be backed up with very deep pockets.

Has it occurred to you that you might have outgrown your boy racer phase and would get more enjoyment from spending your money elsewhere?

Audi S5 might be a solid call if RS models are abit too expensive to maintain

To be fair the OP sounds a bit like me a few years ago and I did it, I came from a Focus ST though.

All depends on how much fun he wants really.
He's "Super" bored with the current car.

A nice GTI might fit the bill, a Focus ST, or Even an RS, getting to double his current power so that should keep him happy.

The MX5 / S2000 suggestions are quite valid, and things I considered also.
Will be quite different and different can be a lot of fun, especially with those cars.

Still though, if he has the cash, go for the RS4

They are a lovely car, but general running costs (tax/insurance/tyres/petrol/servicing) are going to be quite similar to an RS.

Bigger things do cost more on an RS though...

    Expensive cars yes.

But the big thing is alot of the parts are mass produced unlike the RS models which are Bespoke and specifically for the RS models (similar to M cars for BMW)

Is why i would pick up an S model in a heartbeat but most likely chicken out of an RS or indeed an M car

Fair enough. He mentioned that he was buying a fancy car now because he could . it's perfectly possible that he wanted one since he was 15 and got it when he was 30 and didn't enjoy it because he grew up in the meantime. I suggested it so no point going on about it. Good luck

A 1.4 golf is your definition of an awesome car??! What a sheltered life you must have led....

23k buys a whole lot of car, like others have said a mk6 gti would be a lot more fun, better still a golf r32. Or if he's feeling more impractical then a Honda S2000, RX6 or Mx5 are great fun!

Not my definition but If he really wanted it then he must have thought it was worth spending a load of money on. Awesome/worth a load of money. Jaysus lads.
Anyway it depends on what else you can do with the money at the stage of your life. When you're a teenager you can spend all your money on a car and have a great time. When your 30 and you spend all your money on a car you could look at it and think 'I could have gotten a deposit or a house and a runabout for that money'.

    Irrelevant.

He has already this much invested in a car he is unhappy with so why not have same invested in a car that he will enjoy ?

Jaysus id love that, I could afford to just about buy it but then I couldn't afford the €1809 tax, insurance and the 20 bucks a go on juice just to drive 5 mins to the local shop!

Or reevaluate what he actually wants whether it's another expensive car or not. If he's 30 after spending a load of money on a car for the first time, then maybe another expensive car isn't the solution. His priorities might have changed since he was a teenager and a day in mondello driving a race car might do the trick.

Yes. He's in his 30s and this is the one time in his life when he might have a fast and fun car. So he's 30 and got this far without a fast and fun car. Maybe a fast and fun car wouldn't be worth the money to him and that's why he didn't enjoy the golf. If he wants a fast and fun car experience, he could try a track day in cars which are faster and funner than he could afford and spend the rest of the money on grown up stuff. Should I use smaller words?

This thread is a load of ****e, the op hasn't responded since his first post and without him adding any clarification the suggestions on here are veering all over the place.

This is looking like how to troll the motors forum 101..

Today I saw a caterham and a V8 M3 coupe, with the info the op has given us so far both of those might be valid choices.. Or totally irrelevant!

I went through 11 cars in 4 years because I got bored with them. It's more to do with the car than it is cars in general. There is an old man well into his 80's beside me and he has a 1980 merc that he restored himself, he cleans it every week using proper methods. He and the wife use it daily.

I'll be like that someday so go somewhere else with your 'boy' racer sh*tetalk. Maybe do a spot of gardening.
