Holiday time & Money Jar Tip

It's getting to the time of year we're all starting to count what's in our big water cooler bottles of coins for our holiday spending money :D
A great tip for anyone starting to go through theirs, get a good magnet, it will pick up all the coppers in a few minutes.
I brought mine to the coin machine in a Supervalu cos i'm way too lazy for counting out almost €30 in coppers, i'd rather give them €4.50 or so to do it.

You have almost €25.50 spending money for your holidays? Where are you going - Mary street?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Don't spend it all in one shop.

€30 in coppers....I'm guessing the OP has nearly €750 in total.
Couldn't save my dessert till last myself.

You and all your fellow coin hoarders are a menace to society. In other countries you would be put in jail.

It is a completely stupid practice, costing you money and time and forcing the Central Bank to mint far more coins than should be needed.

Going on holiday is a waste of time and money.

I love counting a stash of coins. Wouldn't get off the sofa for less than 75 in coppers.

    "I'm guessing"

    guess - verb
estimate or conclude (something) without sufficient information to be sure of being correct.

€30.00 divided by an assumed average of 3c = 1,000 coins

Based on that quantity of coppers, I'm assuming 1,500 non coppers at a average of 50c = €750

Well, it's a strange figure to arrive at but enjoy your "guessing".

I've "edited" to "include" my "logic". Maybe the "OP" will let us "know" the total "figure".

The ratio of coppers to silver is arbitrary.
Some people never put silver in their jars.

Is it sad that I picked up 5cent of the bus floor today.

I'm getting my concerts this year. I suppose I'm not allowed to say his name.

If I have to crawl, swim or fly. I'm going this year.

Because silver will be robbed from their jars.

There may be other definitions of out there but I'm all out of "explaining" "guessing".

Logic: OP saves coins for to go towards their spending money for their annual holiday. I'm making the assumption that OP has a fair idea that they may need more than just a years supply of coppers and thus saves all coins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,383 ✭✭✭✭Birneybau

I guess the o.p. has €4,000,000 in non-coppers and notes of multiple currencies.

Here's some logic. If OP spent their small change when shopping, like I do, their holiday fund would be boosted with extra banknotes. Which are a lot less hassle to count.

    also alot less enjoyable.

i love counting and bagging my change tbh. i hate having to bring it to a bank or worse again a shop!

i think we should all throw a handful of coppers into a glass bottle and guess how much op has got.....closest wins the pot....

I save €2 coins. I've currently got around €600 at the moment. That'll go towards my holiday ;)

couldn't you just melt the copper down OP?

Make a copper head & shoulder sculpture of Roy Keane and flog it for a few grand.

    Convenience.
Have you tried to cash in coins in a bank lately? They only provide this facility 1 hour per week afaik.

Also, shops can refuse to accept payment in for something if paid with over 50 coins.

    no no no. automated checkouts.

You must have missed the bit about separating the coppers from the rest ;) I'll have you know I've enough to holiday on the south side, maybe even Nassau Street ;)

Kids are still too young to use as slave labour to sort them out :D
All in all I've about €450 in the bottle for those wondering.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,902 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

I'd about 100 quid in my jar until the kids emptied it and put it in their trocaire boxes.

Some Ethiopian lad will now be going on holidays using my change as his spending money. Fair played til him!!

    Upside down water cooler bottle.......

Believe it or not I do have a bank account as well... ;)

My kids do have piggybanks though, one has nearly 100 in it, don't remember her getting a job though and €2 pocket money a week still doesn't add up??? :D

The trick is to regularly raid it.
Take out €14 in coins and give them a tenner. They'll think they're minted...

I count mine and change them in local businesses who are only too delighted to get the change.

LOL at anyone says they haven't time to count their money, those type of problems are rarely chronic. :)

It won't be that good, a couple of bags of coke and a hooker without a beard, if he's lucky.

Because I consider my time to be valuable and don't want to waste it counting coins?

if you truly valued your time, would you not then spend your change as you get it, saving the time it takes filling the jar, and then bringing them to the shop and running them through the machine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,633 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

I don't get how people view this as a method of saving money.

Either you spend money or you don't?

Whether it's in coin form or in the bank makes no difference. Do people just spend money if they have coins in their wallet purse.

Then after all that to give 10-15% away at a machine is just crazy.

If you must do it just do some shopping in a supermarket and pay at a self service checkout machine.
Tesco have a great coin sorter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,659 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Did it last year for 10 months, threw all change from nights out, trips to the shop etc. into a jar.
Counted it before going on holidays, was shocked that it amounted to €570. Bagged it myself and took it to the bank who lodged it into my account, nice little top-up before we went away.
