Probably disappointing for those who were expecting the rumoued Stars. Pokken was one of the very pleasant surprises on the Wii U, anyone who didn't have it could do a lot worse than pick it up on Switch, quite a good fighting game.

Like I said, I'm not a pokemon person, but are they just porting 3DS games to 3DS? Or is there something special about them?

Regardless of what was announced, isn't it nice to get a little taste of what E3 will be like in a few days?

    What, disappointing? I hope not.

I wasn't expecting much to begin with tbh. At least it's out of the way now in time for next week.

Yeah disappointed tbh, was hoping stars would get announced, would have bought a switch right away

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,402 ✭✭✭Pac1Man

My guess is Stars was coming to the 3DS originally. Nintendo have now decided to release it exclusively on the Switch in early 2018. Ultra Sun & Moon is a stop gap to appease Pokémon fans.

There's also been 0 confirmation that 'Stars' is actually a thing, so I still wouldn't get the hopes up too much yet.

Yeah I can see them keeping it a 3ds exclusive tbh, they are going to try and keep the two consoles going IMO as there's too much money to drop the Ds/handheld line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,067 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

Nintendo are porting everything from Wii U to Switch with "deluxe" versions but apparently it doesn't make enough sense to port these "deluxe" versions of Sun and Moon to Switch

This would be enough for some people to buy a Switch, it just doesn't make sense to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,392 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

Might still be the console interface doesn't suit Pokemon in the 3ds/ds style or could be they just want to maintain the cash cow of the 3ds versions and still offer a Pokemon game on switch just not the pokemon game.

There's 60 million + 3DS's out there, and 2 million ish switches. Makes sense.
I mean it's **** cos I want it on the switch and not the 3DS, but business wise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,537 ✭✭✭Icyseanfitz

Keep pokemon on the handheld so they can sell boatloads of the 4ds whenever that is released. They'd be killing off the handheld by releasing the mainstream Pok?mon on the switch. Sucks but makes business sense

On the one hand, Pokemon on the Switch would just fire Switches out the door.

On the other hand, well they have Monster Hunter and Mario Odyssey which are both going to sell systems. They have the 3DS family swan song, the n2DS to sell, and UM/US will take care of that nicely. And traditionally the Pok?mon series has been slow to move to the new platform (well... Pokemon X/Y was about a year and a half behind the 3DS launch with B/W2 coming to DS a few months after the 3DS launch). Sun/Moon Ultra ComboBreaker Hyper Edition could be held until next Summer or Chrimbo 2018 if they don't have their **** together for a high profile 1st party release.

But it's nice to see that sometimes you guys can support a decision that makes good financial sense and sometimes you can't :D Bitter? MOI????

    They're saving Stars for E3.
Though then would it be Stars or Ultra Stars?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

Regarding Pokemon Stars coming or not coming and on what device, it's the Pokemon Company who have more of a say in that than Nintendo and even Gamefreak, who develop entirely separate from Nintendo, are a bigger factor in what get's released as well.

Wii U and Switch are on a par graphically.

3DS and Switch are a canyon apart.

The 3DS is 400x240 on the top screen (800x240 when taking 3D into account) and the bottom screen is 320x240.

The Switch is 1280x720. To make Sun/Moon look good on Switch, all graphics would need to be redone - thousands of characters and objects, thousands of textures. The interface would need rework too since there is only one screen.

We may find out next week that all this work has been done (Stars/Eclipse/whatever) so hopefully that's the case.

Don't underestimate how much work is involved in the port, though.

As others have said, it was probably extremely wishful thinking to expect a mainline Pokémon game on Switch this soon. I think the 3DS was out for well over a year before X and Y were available, Black2/White2 came out on the DS a few months after the launch of the 3DS iirc (although they were playable on 3DS due to backwards compatibility and the similar screen set-up/tech).

That's just when using the console remotely, bumps up from 720p up to 1080p when connected to the TV.

Before you get too excited, this is for a Japanese Dragon Quest XI Direct on June 21st at 8PM local time and it will be 14 minutes long. Still no word on a Western localisation.

    That's 12PM here in Ireland.

There may be a Direct happening next week. I think we're due one soon. There's a couple of rumours on the net, nothing more but I think it could be announced on Tuesday(doubt it'll be Monday because 9/11) and shown then either on Wednesday or Friday. Don't get your hopes up, it's just a rumour and a minuscule one at that.
