Messy break up... now I want my stuff back

A few years ago I went travelling with my then-girlfriend. I had over 100 books (mix of expensive textbooks and just regular books) that she offered to store at her place till we came back. Long story short we broke up at the end of the holiday, it was a messy break-up, it was my fault. I went home and it kinda ruined the rest of her trip.

Anyway I wanted my books back, but we parted on extremely bitter terms, and she was out of Ireland over the past 18 months.

Now she's back. Would it be really petty to text and ask for my books back? The last time I saw her she was crying and screaming.

Some of these books are really important and I don't want to shell out hundreds for replacements. My back-up option is to break into her attic. Might be less dangerous than facing her and her family....

Did the house have a fireplace?

I'll break into her attic and retrieve the books for a nominal fee.

*grabs ninja suit, some rope and a satchel of handy ould bits and pieces for attic plunderin'*

It's probably futile at this stage, but you've nothing to lose by asking

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,707 ✭✭✭whatismyname

depends. which is more important for you - the desire to get your books back, or the desire (if you have it) not to potentially drag sh1t back up for her?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,188 ✭✭✭LDN_Irish

No harm in trying*. Just give it the old "hi, I thought maybe now that the dust has settled I could collect my stuff to save you storing it at yours. Black blah etceterblah"

*she might completely lose her **** but you should be alright.

You're perfectly entitled to look for the return of your books, there's nothing petty about it at all.

Have they got any treasured pets that you could kidnap and use as a bargaining chip? That's probably the best route to go down if its an option

Pretend you want her back, woo her with flowers, chocolates and immense sex, get books back, break up again...why do I always have to state the obvious for you OP?

It would be a lot easier if you had some naked pics of her.

Post them here if you want.

ah they'll probably be old editions by this point, so probably worth feck all.

Remember trying to sell my old textbooks a few years after uni and with new editions having come out, most would get me next to nothing.

Possibly look into some form of emissary you can send on your behalf. If the horse returns with a headless body at least you'll have an answer.

Ring her and ask her if its OK if you leave them there for a few more months, then be on standby to load them up from the front lawn within 15 minutes

Ah ya are! Court papers will be a great way to stay in touch.

With such audacity, she'll probably fall in love with you all over again.

Women love jerks for some reason.

Get a family member to text her saying that you've died and ask her has she anything of yours that they can remember you by.

    She'll offer up the books.

    Easy.

Her birthday is only a month away, I could insert a taunting birthday card in with the civil summons...

Usual couple stuff. She was sick and argumentative, I was argumentative and probably very selfish. I hooked up with some Yanks and did my own thing. We argued until I had had enough and changed my flights.

Her girlfriends still don't talk to me so I can't gauge how she feels now. But every time I hear a bottle of Jacob's creek cracking open, my ears go red and my nose gets itchy. I doubt I'm forgiven in other words.

What is the value of all the books? A few hundred euro?
Do you value your dignity less than a few hundred euro?

The books aren't really valuable to you, if they were you'd have collected sooner or never left them there in the first place. No way I'd be going back looking for them. If you need one or two replacements go shopping.

    .

    Now your just being ridiculous!

sounds to me that, subconsciously, you want her back. Thats why getting the small claims registrar involved as a go-between could be a great way to open up the lines of communication.

P.S. these days, pdfs of most books are available to pirate free of charge ffs!

I can't remember the last time i paid for a book or a CD.

Obviously she hugs them at night, rocking back and forth lamenting what could have been...

Are the books really that important to you? Or are you just mad that you were too scared to ask your ex-girlfriend for them back at the time of the breakup, and now you are blaming her for holding onto them?

If a few years have passed, and you haven't asked for them back yet.. then I wouldn't embarrass yourself anymore. Leave it.

She's allowed her attic to be used as a storage facility for his books for the intervening years, he'll wind up paying her.

OP, if you were that big a tool to her then leave her alone. You don't even know if she still has them and she can do without that wound beings sliced open again.

Is the stuff really that important OP? It's not like in the olden times of losing your records & books in a break up. These days you can probably just download pretty much any book or album from the internet. Away to KAT with you!

Op I hope you get your books back. I once had an ex and she threw out my original PS2 and Mem card. She also threw out my ps2 games. I still cry myself to sleep sometimes when I think of that PS2. Murder should never be legalised. But IF it had to be legal in any one scenario, throwing out a man's original ps2 would be call enough to do so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,134 ✭✭✭Lux23

Ask her for the books back, if she says no then work out how much they all cost and send her a letter saying she owes you that amount. I doubt there is anything legal you can do though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,235 ✭✭✭✭Cee-Jay-Cee

There is only one way to deal with this. Call the guards, tell them she stole your books and is threatening to burn them and they'll go fetch them for you. Sorted. Your welcome.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,507 ✭✭✭Buona Fortuna

    Tell her you're gay.

Then casually ask for the stuff back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,773 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Of course ask her. Last time you saw her she was crying her eyes out, right. For all you know she could have been approached 10 mins later by a tall, sallow skinned, meditarian looking guy named Juan. Juan asks in accented English 'who would make a beautiful woman like you cry'. She explained the situation to him over a few drinks and before you know it, they are a sweaty mess back in Jan's hut, down by the beach.

She might have forgotten all about you and might be delighted if you came and took your musty books from her attic which Juan has helped her convert into a yoga studio.

It's possible. No harm in asking politely. 18 months is a long time.
