Seems like a good deal for just the photo storage. $12.99 for the year for all photos including raw files. Also backs up your phone photos.

Or there is a €59.99 for all your computer files

Have download the 3 month free trial to give it a go.

I signed up with Bitcasa a few years back and lost over 1TB of data when they cancelled their plans. They gave two weeks to download everything and shag off! Got some down but not all. The only reason I think this might be a runner is because its Amazon who are somewhat reputable. Here's hoping!

Yeah I have used backblaze but agree that this might be a bit more stable long term. plus the current upload speed on Amazon at the moment is a hell of alot better than backblaze ...

Just signing up for that too - looks great. I presume the photos will upload as is rather than being compressed? I am on Flickr too but this is belt & braces!

    Thanks,

Just started a 3 month free trial and currently uploading a folder of 320 NEFs.

I've got about 500Gb of raw files and was about to sign up for One Drive.

This looks very promising. Also, I've just downloaded the Android app and I can view NEF files on my phone - I didn't expect that! OK, just the little embedded jpeg but it's something!

I should probably read the T&Cs before uploading any more :D

First impressions are good. It's nice and easy the way you can select an entire folder to upload. I've kicked off a 10GB folder this morning. What's also good is that by just hovering over the file names a thumbnail of the image is shown...makes it easy to view photos that you're interested in / wish to download. Haven't played around with links yet though - I like the way in Dropbox you can generate a link for sharing without sharing the folder itself...

Just a friendly heads up, if you intend to upload everything at once, make sure your unlimited broadband really is unlimited.
I got stung in January with vodafone for going 31gb over the 'fair usage' of 300gb. At €1 per gb over, it was a small kick in the stones.
Next month our unlimited broadband is becoming truly unlimited, i think, so i'll wait til that kicks in before uploading the couple of terrabytes of raw files that i'd like to archive.

Well I've just reached 19.8GB and it says the cloud drive is full, I'm on the three month trial thingy! Hmmmm!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,151 ✭✭✭Ben D Bus

I thought I signed up for this correctly last night but I seem to only have 5Gb free? I don't see the $12.99 offer anywhere. Did I need to go to amazon.com? I went to amazon.co.uk

Just figured out that if you zip your folders it won't recognise them as images (duh).. I unzipped the folders and put them up with no hassle. It recognises the zip file as a file for which you have a maximum 5GB of space.

    Is this a know problem

It's known to both of us :)

But nobody else seems to be having this problem?

The only way I can get unlimited photos is "free with Prime", which is of course not "free". It's not $11.99 either!

Ben D Bus, did you follow Dereks link on the first post. Also, did you download the app as suggested? It seems like you went another direction because it was relatively easy to sign up for me and I'm by no means technically proficient.

No such thing as a stupid question if you do not know the answer.

May I ask you guys: do you also use your own backups? Photos can be pretty precious, some I would hate to lose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 811 ✭✭✭Balfey1972

I got the 5gb file max message. Signed up for the unlimited 3 months as I had a lot of video clips from over the years of the family.

3 months free and then $59.00 and this is for all files.
If you just want photos just point it to a folder where just you have photos stored. It was backing up my lightroom catalogs, presets etc. of the original folder I pointed it too.

Also I haven't looked into it yet as I was away for the weekend, over 300gb backed up whilst I was away which took nearly over 6 weeks on backblaze, but I am reckoning that it sees .psd files as 'files' and part of the free 5gb limit.

Have files backed up on two hard drives, one is a mirror of the other,
Should be enough it one of them fails only problem is if your house gets broken in to and they take laptop or pc with everything you have stored on them. I know that might be extreme thinking but I have seen a number of people where this has happened to them.

Is that $59 per year or just a once off payment ?

Yes, I followed the link. When I chose the option for unlimited photo storage I still got directed to the Prime signup page.

The upload client application is pretty crappy too...haven't managed to get much uploaded, but once the teething issues are resolved it should be good! That's a good price for all photos for the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

Just a suggestion - you can buy Microsoft Office 365 for 59.99 per year and get unlimited (yes, truly unlimited, allocated in chunks of 10tb) Onedrive storage. This also allows machine backups too i.e. settings, wallpapers, browser bookmarks etc.

That was my initial plan until I saw the Amazon offer. I might stick with it.

So 762 GB of photos and video uploaded and mega problems. I got various fails during uploads and when I investigated I found out that they had done some deduping of images based on file names so on my HDD I have:

    /folder1/image_1 (pic of dog)

    /folder2/image_1 (pic of cat)

In my CloudDrive I now have:

    /folder1/ (No image!!)

/folder2/image_1 (pic of dog!!! WTF?!!!)

    This is really really bad....

So I rang support and they said it was expected behaviour and that filenames must be unique across your whole CloudDrive. I need to test and make sure I can repeat this but means you need to be really careful what you upload!!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 8,679 Mod ✭✭✭✭Rew

I did a bit of testing there and cant repeat it so im thinking it was a bug in the uploaded and they have fixed it but still leaves me with a 762GB clouddrive that I need to delete and do over.

Can you not delete those folders on the cloud drive and point the desktop uploader to the folder again?

Of course but uploading 3/4 of a TB takes aaaaaggggeeeesssssss...... :(

I have 100meg up and down but Amazon throttle the uploads (from what i can tell)

Sorry what I meant was just the folders where the errors are or are all your photos in one folder?

Major pain in the ass for sure. I've just about half of 1.4tb done

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 8,679 Mod ✭✭✭✭Rew

The errors are across the board. I have huge timelapse folders with tones of duplicate filenames so its trashed things across way too many folders to ever consider trying to fix. Not to worry at leasts they appear to have solved it even if their support claims its a "feature".

I was listening to either the "Improve Photography" to "TWIP" podcast on the way home yesterday and they talked about hidden charges in these services- retrieval fees, early deletion fees, stuff like that. Might be worth reading the small print folks.

Their biggest watch out mind you was the fact that it could take weeks to upload everything, and to be careful if fair usage clauses, etc. with your provider.

Would love to use amazon, S3 is great, but the lack of trust no one encryption is a deal breaker.

This is what I got as I needed Office anyway - I've over a TB of Files, Backups, Videos and Photos up on OneDrive.

It has a nice sync feature on Windows 8.1 where if you have your drives on your computer (I've 2 1TB drives in a tower) you can have all the files locally on them and it will sync updates / new files to OneDrive. That way my files are always backed up and you can configure that so you don't sync some items.

Microsoft are now offering unlimited cloud storage with their 365 Office packages. It's handy if you need Office anyway, but it's only on the subscription plans. Think it starts at €59 or so, but it's a cheap way if you are a user of Office/Excel etc. :)

That article is out of date but there are recent examples. Everyone should be using 2 Factor Auth on every account that supports it, especially on email accounts.
