What are your favourite Irishisms?

Eg. *"I'll do that now in a minute for you Mary"
*"Ya know your man there by the corner"
*"Ya stupid eejit ya"

Also the fact that some people (usually older generation moderately religious people) say something with about 20 names of religious people in it.

John: "Mary, I'll tell you something now in a minute *finishes tea and very plain ham sandwich*, did you know your man that used hang around by the corner, didn't the eejit get drunk and roll out onto the road and was hit by paddies van!

Mary "oh be the holy Mary Joseph Jesus in heaven above with the mighty angels!"

Well the Irish are related to the Basques, and the Basque for bread is...ogia.

So probably coincidence.:)

We got it from the Normans, who as you might have guessed spoke French. Wheat wasn't a common crop in Ireland until the Normans arrived, so it's not unsurprising that we borrowed their word for a loaf of bread.

That one is particularly dodgy!

Comes from 'codpiece' which was the male of the wonder bra. It accentuated things shall we say.

So, to 'cod' someone = to make out that something's more impressive than it is.

Ultimately from Latin panis. A similar word for bread exists in just about every Romance language. I would suspect that the word entered English with the Normans ( French pain. )
