Perthes desease

My 10 year old son has been diagnosed with Perthes disease in his left hip in A & E recently. We are seeing an orthepaedic specialist next week to chart a way forward in treatment. Anyone gone through a similar situation with their child?

What are the options on treatment? Im hearing about the following:

    1. A brace to be worn for 12/18 months. Is it big? Will he be able to go to the toilet unassisted?

    2. Surgery to insert pins and bolts to be removed at a later date. What is the timescale on this? 12/18 months for all clear or a year as well?

Timescale will be crucial. He'll be gutted if he has to give up rugby/soccer for 12/18 months

    Any feedback welcomed
