hi, I'm getting an exhaust system from the US, will be arriving somewhere in may I think.
I wonder how much it will costs (ish) to put it on the car because I don't have my own garage or material to do it atm.

will be complete exhaust + new cat

    looking in dublin, kildare.

    maybe some other work also

    1991 mx5, LHD.
    - Install carbon wing (perfect in the middle)
    - Install sparco racing seats
    - Replace all fuel lines by bigger high performance onces
    - Install camshaft
    - Install new intake manifold
    - Install big brake kit
    - Install Prothane Bushings (complete kit)

    that's for now

That's a fair whack of work on top of the exhaust system.
Do you have a budget in mind?

for now it's only the exhaust and catalytic converter rest of the parts will be between June and august

I would say around €100 would be fair. Is it coming with new rubber hanger fittings? Does it include a new manifold? It could be a pain getting the old one off on a 24 year old car. Could you not buy a newer RHD car for the same as you are planning to spend?

no because I won't stay in ireland forever and it's a dutch car :) I'm just here for now, yes it will come with complete new rubbers.

no not the manifold, only the cat and the mid pipe and end, I'll be boosting it later when everything is done so the manifold will be replaced at the time. but before that I want at least the new exhaust on

Nice one. I would say €50 in that case if you get the right place. I put a back box on my car recently for €70 fitted.

That €50 would be a fella in a housing estate working off a trolley jack on the rock and roll.

    100-ish euro's I can deal with :) thanks!

Wonder how much the rest of the parts will costs

Funnily enough not the case. If it takes more than an hour to replace from the cat back then there is something wrong. I would stretch to €70. As I said you will have to find the right guy (perhaps not in a housing estate, unless that's where you would normally look for somebody to work on your car).

You said €50 so saying you stretch to €70 now you're just changing things to suit your argument. What if the bolts are a nightmare and shear off etc?
I don't own a car and do my own repairs not that is relevant either.

I got a quote recently from Suohans to make and fit a backbox for €140 all in, so don't think 50-70 is unreasonable.

They also made and fitted a midbox for about the same a couple of years ago

If you're not changing the manifold, this should be doable with a jack and two axle stands. It'll be a bit cramped under there, but the exhaust is fairly accessible.

that's how I did it back in the days, but are you allowed to do that in ireland at the front of your house?

maybe people will complain about it because they think you should go to the garage instead?

I wouldn't let that worry you, how much different is if from you washing/waxing your car as long as you are safe in what you are doing?

You are not exactly asking them to build a spaceship to be fair about it, a back box is a very simple thing to manufacture for an exhaust specialist.

True, just posted it as an example :)

I know, and it was a good price to be fair about it. Are you sure they manufacture the boxes in house?

Yep, the midbox I replaced was on an alfa gtv, the part from alfa was over 600e they made it inhouse and fitted it

Btw, what should be the price for mounting a carbon rear wing? I don't want to do it myself because it needs to be perfect straight and in the middle and the back of it needs to end before the rear bumper ends, and I don't want easy bolt access :)

Bushes will be the biggest cost out of the above.

Serious pain in the arse to fit.

I am not too far off the mark. Any exhaust guy worth his salt will grind off the bolts straight away and replace them. I don't want an argument at all. I am just speaking of my recent experience. I had a back box changed for €70 in an exhaust place (the price surprised me too). Even a hundred would have been a good price tbh as the car passed the NCT and will give me another years motoring. Not trying to argue with you Kevin but this is my very recent experience.

Should be okay as long as the car doesn't fall on top of you!!

I am looking for no arguement but you are gone from €50 to €70 to €100 now.

yeah but most garages dont allow you to buy the stuff yourself and they want you to buy their stuff but that just isnt good enough

It's the most horrendous job known to man on a 20 year old car, I'd nearly pay somebody else to so it just to avoid the grief.

Working on 20 year old cars is never going to be fun. :-)
Changed over the starter motor on her mx5 last weekend. Bastid of a job. So where the brakes, the timing belt and everything else. Every time I do a job I wonder why I do it to myself. But in the end I'm glad I did it.

No, there's no law against doing your own car work :p

I'd try do as much as you can yourself. Particularly stuff like the seats, which is easy.

If you've got the stands and jack, you should have a crack at it yourself.
Everyone I know just does it in front of their house, bar a few money bags. :p
