Frontier Airlines. Ones below are older, I think the Frontier letters are green these days with emphasis on the 'F'.

I like the simplicity the American Eagle Livery. It is the same as AA but I think the smaller planes amplify the American Flag design on the tail better.

Always liked this retro Cathay scheme from back in the day. Green on aluminium. So many boring liveries around now.

Are we talking livery or special paint jobs?

I love the black Air NZ scheme.

Back in the day Equatoriana had some really psychedelic colour schemes.
As far as I remember, they were the first airline to diversify and break the mould:

Landor Associates were responsible for many of the all time great liveries IMO.

The other day I was reflecting on how Norwegian had wasted an opportunity with their livery.

This got me thinking about the very question OP raises.

I reckon ACLs Europe Airpost is up with the best of them

Wasn't mad about this when I first saw it but its growing on me, as is the new Etihad but its definitely a bit of a marmite livery!

That image makes it look very silvery.

I'm similar with the new AA, its growing on me.

I happen to like the bmi livery before they were bought out. I thought it looked bright and modern, while staying away from the dreaded 'Euro-white'

I think I have to give EI-DVM my vote too.
I love the lines of this livery on the A320.

In addition I know the EI staffer who pushed for it to be implemented under 2 different CEO's. So I know a little about the background and have a certain affection for it.
He actually received a email from the EI CEO (in Nov 2010) with the draft livery from Airbus paint design office. He thus let me know the retro livery when it was still an unknown to the spotters. He tipped me off so I managed to get video footage of EI-DVM arriving after dark back in May 2011.

So I am definitely biased in my regard for this livery.

Scandinavian airlines also have a plane at the moment with the old style livery. Its gorgeous!

Outside of that air new Zealand and Norwegian.

Oh and I really really hate the Aer Lingus colour scheme and livery. The stewards uniforms in particular are badly in need of updating. The plane above looks much better.

I quite liked the pre-merger United livery (although I didn't like pre-merger United...); it looked a bit odd at first particularly as we're usually used to white on bottom, colour on top these days but it grew on me.

The design firm behind it wrote an article on it and the other work they did tied in to it when United took on the Continental scheme:

    http://new.pentagram.com/2011/03/fifteen-years-of-flying-united-1/

The Continental scheme on the other hand is a dated mess, with someone else's name (United) stuck over it.

I would agree, the blue and white 'tulip' design was very crisp. The current iteration is awful.

There's an interesting diversion, UA and CO merged and choose 1 livery with the others name. It looks awful. AA and US merged and continued with the launch of a new livery, which while controversial is still a more positive step than the bastadised UNITED livery we see today.

I loved the look of TWA's last livery.

    0631579.jpg

In my opinion the current Aer Lingus livery never looked better than it did on the Tristar. It really suited the aircraft.

I thought the tail and logo of the 'Blue Rising' United livery was splendid, but the lower-fuselage blues didn't appeal; to me it looked like someone had discovered gradients in their painting program and was eager to apply them.

It also quite untidy when viewed from underneath, as there were two long bare-metal ventral patches:

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5c/United_Airlines_B757-200_on_down_the_glideslope.jpg

In general I think that blue in a livery is a mistake, as it reduces contrast against the sky. For example, Windrose:

    http://www.airplane-pictures.net/photo/134927/ur-wrh-windrose-air-airbus-a321/

Thought I might make an excception for Braniff...

I must say I've always loved the Niki livery.
    37d56875f7.jpg
People's Vienna line isn't bad either. A bit quirky on the E170, I'm must say.
    People's_ViennaLine_ERJ-170_Lebeda.jpg
I'll just say on top of those, the EI 757 is brilliant.
WOW Force One is notable simply because it's WOW.

While I'm on a livery binge let's throw in the Danish Air Transport ATR 42-300.
    ATR_ATR-42-320,_Danish_Air_Transport_AN1160979.jpg
On a side note the tail is like the North Korean flag.
