What do you do to treat yourself?

The catch is without hardly spending anything :)

I buy a €1 scratch card almost every saturday (its very small, but the excitement to scratch it never fails)

Read the news papers at the weekend with a nice cup of coffee

    Lovely fresh bedsheets every weekend

Watching mind-altering brain trash like Made in Chelsea and secretly loving it.

I know this mightnt be directly treating myself, but I like to do something nice for someone (how ever small it may seem), at least once a day/week/help in some way. Even if its only an ear to lend. Or a open a door for someone, or a smile and a how are you to a random stranger.

Every Sunday, I put on a Montagne Jeunesse masque for about 15-20 minutes. They're only about $2.50 if you get the packets at the store and a lot of times they're on sale for $1. It's not high end stuff, but it makes me feel nice and pampered on a Sunday evening.

I buy scented candles and use them! I used to have loads of candles as decoration, then I realised that life is too short so started burning them most days.I love nice smells, and even if I am having a pj day, I will still wear perfume.

    Fabric softener in a wash.
    I'm very easily pleased.

I have early nights with a pot of tea and a book. And I do yoga and meditation.

Every Saturday afternoon I have a sauna. ( theres one in my apartment block in Finland and we can book it). I do all my exfoliating and primping etc as well. Its soooo nice. I'm definitely getting a proper Finnish sauna into my house in Ireland when the time comes. Not that expensive to do.

Vegetable samosas from Marks & Spencers for one quid. So, so addicted to them :o

Go for a really long walk somewhere lovely around London, blast the music and get the adrenaline pumping. This evening I walked from central London along the Thames, passed Big Ben and the London Eye and it totally sorted my bad mood from a crap day at work. An amble through Hyde Park is another one. It reminds me of how lucky I am and how far I've come.

Clean bedsheets and an early night with a good book and cuddled up to my stuffed toy seal. The OH thinks it's totally creepy that I still have him but he relaxes me!

Long hot shower with lots of smelly stuff.

An expensive blow dry. Breaking the rules here a little but feck it, for 40 odd quid I get to feel like a million dollars.

Eat some cake. Or better yet, bake it.

Switch my work phone off for a day. Sad but true.

Get into bed and read, do my nails, take a long bath, deep condition my hair, listen to happy music, spend an hour drinking coffee in a comfy quiet cafe :) I feel better just thinking about it

I go to the library, peruse all books, CD's, DVD's, log on to computer, read the papers, latest magazines, get a coffee for a euro and hide out for 2 hours,

    Love it...

One of my main little treats is to go charity-shop book shopping. I absolutely LOVE that feeling of finding a book that's been on my list for aaages for a couple of euro.

Buying cute notebooks and then finding an actual use for them.

Doing my nails is super relaxing but I haven't done them in a while now.

Snuggling up with a book in my warm room, fresh sheets, freshly showered, candles burning, and a mug of tea. Pure bliss.

Having some biscuits and tea. I'd never deprive myself of a biscuit.

Walking home from work with my music on bright days.

Good glass of wine served in a massive red wine glass with my book somewhere cosy and friendly.

Watching comedy online and drinking tea.

Putting on something I like wearing and feel good in every other day.

Going to cinema alone and bringing some goodies with me.

I do my nails and watch keeping up with the kardashians, I just LOVE it! :o

I haven't done this yet, but it's something I'm planning on doing. I had a picture printed for a Mother's day present, and I had it mounted. I'm planning on doing more of that with my photography. It just makes everything seem more real. I have photos and portraits blu-tacked to my wall at the moment and it makes my room feel so much more mine.

An occasional take away coffee and a fresh scone in the morning on the way into work.

Listening to amazing music on my headphones on the train into work and having a good think/doing some journalling.

A long shower, shaving my legs, moisturising, doing my nails.

An evening in, just for me. I might get a take away or cook a nice steak and have a glass of wine. Watch a movie, have a bath with candles, read a book or listen to a meditation or music and drift off to sleep.

Going out for brunch on a Saturday morning, going for a walk afterwards and then sifting through some charity shops.

I hardly ever have the time to do it but going to the cinema by myself with a cheeky mini bottle of red wine is the best thing ever.

(most of these activities are free/€15 max so do they count? :) )

a one on one lesson from a good instructor once every week or two on my favourite hobby. Its helping me progress and I love having an hour to myself to focus on myself.

I travel a bit with work and when I stay over its a rare night off for me as im always busy at home so I get one of those montague jeunesse masks in the airport and put it on that evening they are fab and great quality for the price

What a brilliant thread. I rarely treat myself because I can't be bothered but you've all given me inspiration for little things that can be done so simply with just a little effort and not much money.

Maybe even the next time my husband takes our daughter off for the day I'll have a bath and a glass of something instead of scrubbing the kitchen floor and organising the utility room!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 263 ✭✭Wobbly_Legs

A good pamper session is a treat for me, which I rarely have time to fully complete.
Usually only have time for a quick nip in and out the shower:(

Start off with full body exfoliation
Long hot bath with some lush goodies and and collagen eye mask while soaking (I get ten packs of them on ebay for €1.50, whether they do anything or not they feel nice:cool:)
If I'm feeling adventourous I'll shave my pins :pac:
    Moisturise and then self tan
Fluffy pajamas and Fluffy socks whether the OH likes it or not :P
Do a D.I.Y mani and pedi
Hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows
Fresh bedsheets whether or not they're due for changing.
Hot water bottle to warm my side of the bed up.

Nothing better on a cold evening!
The snuggly cozy bits get changed up a little if its warm weather though.

I like to curl up in bed with my laptop and watch an episode of Grey's Anatomy or Catfish. This is usually accompanied by a Cadbury's Whole Nut which has been sent all the way from Ireland by my lovely mam. :):o

I also like to go for a swim or even just to sit by the swimming pool for a while and read. It's already almost 30 degrees over here even though it's not even April and to me there's nothing nicer than a dip in the pool or sitting under the shady palm trees.

If spending money is okay, I like to get a mani/pedi every three weeks. I feel great walking out with nice nails.

These days with kids the idea of "Treating oneself" generally involves getting away from them and having alone time. So generally I try to send the girls away for a night every so often to do whatever. Usually they go home to the parents or to a hotel - which involves being at the other end of the country - and then take in some shops - cafes - beaches or hills - or even just reading a book on a park bench.

At home we try to eat well and sleep well so "treating ourselves" often involves doing the OPPOSITE of this. Staying up all night engaged in some useless pursuit like TV Season Binge watching - or substituting our fine home cooking with a Bucket of KFC or the like.

I'm not great at taking long baths or similar relaxing activities. I have no patience for them. One of the most realaxing holidays was when we were visiting my home country. I was bed ridden with back pain, my partner and parents took care of the kids and I got some seriously strong painkillers that made me feel like I was floating. When I was not stoned I was reading. It was brilliant. :D

Sometimes on Saturday, when it is nice and warm, sitting outside in the garden with a cup of coffee and Saturday edition of Irish Times.

I buy a book every payday. Currently have a stack of books next to my bed to read, but still, going into the bookshop and picking out something nice to have on the list to read next is always good.

Sleeping later than 6.30am, about once a month.

The odd bottle of wine every few weeks.

Spending an hour just sitting on my own, headphones in, ignoring the world.

    An afternoon nap very occasionally.

Reading this thread makes me happy but also makes me realise how much I do for myself. I rarely say no to myself really, unless I cannot afford it.

So here goes, lamp on, music on my cd player and either reading or writing a blog post.
Getting macaroons in BT and looking at all the lovely shoes
my burlesque classes every week (and more recently kick boxing too)
having music on walking home from work
    Giving myself a pedicure
Taking myself to the cinema after work or meeting a friend just to have a bite to eat.

The list goes on really. Last year a few things happened which made me realise that happiness and health is so important and no one is going to make you happy like you can yourself.

It's time really. So many demands on my time from work, family, friends... Spending time doing something I choose is awesome.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,154 ✭✭✭Dolbert

A lie-in when husband takes the baby, usually once a week (heaven!)

Doing a big, long grocery shop by myself. I've always enjoyed that for some reason.

Window shopping in a buggy-friendly shopping centre and then getting a good strong coffee from the coffee shop.

Just generally enjoying the freedom of maternity leave and having largely unstructured days!

Listening to relaxation or meditation tracks on Youtube before bed.

Putting on Netflix and watching some trashy documentary or another.

Getting out my ipod and rediscovering favourite songs from years ago.

    Kitty belly rubs :)

I listen to ASMR videos on Youtube. (Can't explain ASMR to those who don't know what it is).
I get comfy; usually snuggled under a blanket with my headphones on, and let the relaxing sounds wash over me.

I love ASMR! I'd call it a treat, but I indulge way too often!

Haha, me three. I didn't call it ASMR as I assumed people wouldn't know what it was!

Ooh, I occasionally like a good, glossy magazine too. I hardly ever buy them so when I do it's a real treat!

I'd spend a fortune on fashion and interiors magazines if I didn't rein myself in.

I've heard asmr mentioned a few times lately, must look into that.

When I'm really stressed, I spend a day totally alone, shopping, reading, walking on the beach or on trek paths in nearby woods and follow that with a nice dinner and an early night with a book. Total silence is what I sometimes need to just get by.

Without spending any money...a nice treat for me is a living room picnic :pac: I get some of my favourite nibbles and some tea, load it all up on the coffee table and watch a marathon of my favourite show on Netflix or shows I've recorded and just chill out on the sofa nibbling without budging. Best done on a Saturday morning when housemates are still in bed :D

    That's a lovely idea Miamee.

I don't have a bath where i am now so it's such a fab luxury. I had one recently when I was away, bought cheap candles and bubble bath and stayed in it for an hour and did the same the next morning. God such bliss! I'm only short of buying rubber ducks and singing with them :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,115 ✭✭✭greenfrogs

I buy myself books and dvds to treat myself. I have a kindle but recently have been buying paperbacks again. There's nothing like going to bed and reading a good book.

I also buy nail varnish and make up. Nothing too expensive. I enjoy spending the time picking and deciding on which one to buy. It's half the fun.

Put on the kettle and have in these delicious cakes from bakery down the road, stick on the tv and watch some of the many recorded programmes i have and don't have time to watch!

Bbq. I cook for friends and family but for me the best thing are bbqs. Fairly simple food, sitting outside, drinking a bit of wine, chatting and relaxing. It even doesn't matter if kids drop food on the floor, dog eats it anyway. I do the cooking but I still find everything very relaxing and enjoyable. We had one yesterday and today. I have to buy more lump wood now. I might even smoke some ribs. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,449 ✭✭✭✭pwurple

Make something. Doesn't matter what it is... Could be cooking, or a bit of crafty stuff, but I just find it so lovely to plan it a bit, sort out my tools, get stuck in, do the finishing touches. And there is something to show for it afterwards, which is ever so satisfying!
