Heard through the grapevine today that the construction adjacent to the Tesco Extra site in Naas is for Applegreen Station and McDonald's Drive Thru.

Can't find anything on the net associated with it though....

check out kildare county council planning area online
go to the map part find the location and click on the planning dots the details are all there.
    http://kildare.ie/CountyCouncil/OnlineServices/OnlinePlanningEnquiries/

I find using Internet explorer the best way to look on that site.

I find it awkward to link unfortunately to certain planning applications
and a good few planning applications for that site,
including Tesco looking for planning for a petrol station,
also the guy building the McDonalds, was looking for the adjoining site to build another fast food outlet, so more than likely a KFC.

why? - Tesco normally charge higher prices for fuel than other stations and has a second rate retail offering.

I'm in Killarney regularly - Tesco fuel last Friday was 1.419 for petrol and 1.309 for diesel. 15 minutes away in Killorglin, petrol was 1.379 and diesel 1.239.

When's the new McDonalds opening? Was in Tesco today and it seemed to be nearly done.

No plans to close the one on main street.

Just curious does anyone know when the McDonald's on the Main Street was put in? I was thinking around 1997?

It was June 1998. I remember because I was heavily pregnant at the time :)

McD's opened today. Advertised as 24/7 opening.

I think most of them are, drive thru anyway. The ones in liffey valley and newbridge and lucan are all 24x7

    Newbridge isn't open 24 hours.

Newbridge open from 6am-12am. Think they looked for 24hours but due to residential properties nearby it was refused.

With regard to the Applegreen garage, it is proposed to be located where the old concrete pipes factory used to be on the way into Naas from Dublin. According to a local councillor planning is at an advanced stage.

As for a Tesco petrol station no chance. This was stopped by councillor Darren Scully when Tesco applied for planning for the retail complex a couple of years ago, citing traffic issues on the local (Monread) road as the reason apparently.

Anyway just a point of note. The Topaz garage on the Sallins Road accepts the Tesco fuel vouchers.

Are there other plans afoot for in around the new McDonald's? They've certainly laid down more road than needed for the McDonald's making it look they have plans.

Bit of a nightmare at the new McDonalds at the moment

It seems people can't grasp the concept of order food, get number, when number is called collect food

Some young one arguing when 36 was called and she had 60 but 36 had the same thing as she had ordered

I saw the queue for the drivethru on Saturday - it looked a nightmare!

I wouldn't like to see it if a second fast food place arrives, as it is reported that KFC may be also going there. It was shown as a potential location on a Channel 4 programme earlier this year.

And you think it's bad now?

Two things I'd imagine will be in play:

1: KFC isn't anywhere near as popular
2: There's always a [pointless] excitement factor about a new drivethrough which will die off

I totally agree. Things will die down once the novelty factor of a new drive thru McDonalds passes. As you say KFC is not as popular but however the madness will return if it too opens (but for a lot shorter time).

Irish syndrome of having no idea has kicked in big time now on that roundabout with people not using correct lanes and having no idea were there indicator I'd

Just in the new one. You order at the till or one of the self-service booths, you get an order number and wait at the collection point for you order. Like Argos but with burgers :)

    Dublin Airport beside topaz aswell

All the new ones are using this system I think, I just meant the old store in Naas doesn't use it (yet anyway :) )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,033 ✭✭✭Tom Cruises Left Nut

Its a good system as you get the paying bit out of the way more efficiently

Now if the staff could get the orders out in order all would be grand

Good jobs boost for the area but does a McDonalds seriously need 112 employees to run a single outlet? It must be a massive restaurant!!!

Would be a lot of part time staff - no way are there 112 FTE roles there.

However, a busy branch can need 12-15 people per shift easily.

That's a daft statement. If you order three Big Macs, two happy meals and the accompanying bits and pieces while I order a simple cheesburger meal just for me, of course mine is going to be ready first. Add in the fact that some items are simply not cooked or assembled yet, and orders will always be out of sync.

I get what you are saying but one day I was there and a guy ordered just an apple pie, you could see them ready to go on the pass, he waited as 10 orders after him were sent out first

24 hours a day, 7 days a week = 168 hours, so one employment position requires 4.5 full time staff.

So with a mix of full time and part-time, very easy to get to 112 people.

Well that is ridiculous! He was a bigger eejit to wait that patiently. I sure as well wouldn't have!

And that there is why they switched to the numbering system. They get your cash fast by removing the queue between the door and the till. Once you've paid your option of walking out the door because of a long wait time is gone.

Why did they take the McDonalds from Naas town centre and move it out to the edge with a drive thru? Bad town planning IMO but free market profiteering trumps the common good every time in this country...The same thing happened in Sligo.

Don't get me wrong - I love the occasional McDs, but putting it at the edge of the town disadvantages those who don't have access to car transport; creates traffic congestion and further sucks commercial life out of the town centre.

Anyhow isn't Naas now big enough to support two McDonalds? And if I was planning a MaccyDs on the edge of Naas, I'd locate it in a services directly on or just off the DC, not beside a big Tesco.

I happen to know that that particular McDonald's is the best performing McDonald's in Leinster, if not the whole of Ireland. So unfortunately while I agree with you that it has drawn away from the town centre, the location is perfect for the business. They should look at a second spot in the town though

The sales in the town one plummeted once the Monread one opened. In fairness to the franchisee he tried to keep it open for about 18 months after Monread opened.

Was it not the same person who owned both?

Makes sense where it is, gets traffic out of an already congested town centre and plenty of space and parking available which isn't in the town centre, it's no wonder it's extremely busy.

On plus side, makes it harder for Kids to get a Maccy D's which is no bad thing in this day and age.
