First time poster in this thread, want to set up a .net domain. As I understand it I can go about it two ways:
    1. Pay to register my domain name
    2. Pay a host to both register and host my website domain

It seems to me that the latter is the more beneficial of the two, however it's working out roughly €60 per year, anyone know if this is a good rate (BlueHost) or is it needless cost and should I go with option 1 and try and source my own server etc.

It's against Boards rules to discuss specific hosting providers, so you'll have to make your own mind up on what's a fair rate.

With regard to self-host vs a hosting provider, it entirely depends on what it's for and what your capabilities are. What's your upload speed like? Do you have a static IP? What happens if you lose your internet connection? Have you the ability to properly secure a web server?

Actually in itself that's great help, I'll likely be mobile for the next while so paying someone else to host makes sense - hadn't thought of that side of things!
