Not strictly farming or forestry... electric gate issue

I live rurally, having moved back home from England last year. So this thread is more about rural living I suppose...

Everyone around here, including me have electric gates on our property, controlled by a remote key fob. It turns out that our electric gate and that of our direct neighbour, operate on the same frequency.

Just wondering if anyone here has had a similar issue? Everytime he opens his gate to go in and out, our gate opens! It hasn't really been an issue until last week when we had a carpenter in and our gates almost closed on the carpenter's van because our neighbour chose to close his gate at the same time!

So I'm wondering how easy it is to program my gate on a different frequency? The previous owner of our property very unhelpfully didn't supply any manuals or even the name of the company who installed the gate...I don't even know what model gate I have.

So F&F folk...anyone able to help or recommend how I can fix this issue?

SH1t, and I thought I had problems. Maybe go talk to your neighbour and find out who installed his gate?

I remember a lad telling me of bale wrapping in a yard near a pair of these said same gates. The wrapper was operated by zapper, same frequency as the gates, so the gates opened and closed 147 times!

You don't know my problems son! Also, I'm originally from Dublin and don't you know that perceived wisdom states we don't talk to our neighbours...

Besides, this is my problem to fix. No point asking my neighbour who installed his gates...

    Any decent experienced electricians locally?
Buy them a pint in he pub some night and ask them for advice

Your neighbors gates could have been installed by the same person who done yours or he might know who done yours.....

They often can be changed, sometimes the remote and the receiver box will both have a series of micro switches that are set to the same combinations, if you find out the make and model of the gate we might be able to help more.

Open your key fob, there should be a set of switches inside, they will have the same ones on or off as the receiver board on your gate, all you need to do is change 1 switch on fob and receiver this stop your neighbours operating your gate.

It doesn't change the frequency,, but the code

    My gate make is FAAC
beware of opening the control box as there is mains voltage inside it,,, an electrician would be the safest option..

This is the most "first world problem" I've seen posted in the F & F forum ever.

Disconnect the electricity supply from the gates until you get it resolved, use a bail twine to keep the gates closed.

Ah now come on, you can do much better than that. Run the baling twine all the way back to a lever in the house. For a truly authentic look, replace the two gates with two pallets.

This thread is kinda putting me off electric gates now. Seems scarily easy for anyone to open them. It appears anyone with a zapper and a bit of know how could open any gate.... and the main reason l'd be thinking of getting them is for security! !!!

As opposed to having no gate?
Got gates that only open to phonecalls from a certain list, or punch in code. Motion sensor will record anyone approaching either direction for 30m on a 6months loop on a few 'hidden' cameras.

There was a gate out one time, probably before your time, you opened it with your hand :D

Indeed. Much mirth may be had. However, it remains a problem :/

Thanks for advice so far folks. I've been able to filter something useful from the thread, despite the posts at my expense :)

Now that's the kind of system l'd like. The 30m though. ... does that mean it records every car passing the road or are your gates up a private cul de sac?

What l can't understand OP (and I don't expect you to have the answer seeing as you bought the house), is how the second crowd to fit the gates (at yours or your neighbours) didn't cop this problem when they were fitted?!?!

Yep down a 150m track, there's 5 houses that used to be for workers but 3 are now rented out about 50m away so was best compromise iykwim. They had ALOT of hassel with shed painters/scrap men 7/8 years ago so just went over board on security nothing since.... :)

    OP
First speak to neighbour as same guy may have done both. Our gates work on zapper or phone and only to those on an authorised list such as milking machine man and tanker driver.

There should be a beam source and receiver at each side to stop gates closing on pedestrian or vehicle.

Just to get back to the neighbour and him perhaps knowing who installed his gate, that would be useful too.
You only need to change one system to fix the issue, it doesn't matter which.
Does your zapper open the neighbour's gate?
If so, he has the same issue you do, and likely wants it resolved too.

As someone said above, it's probably just a case of changing a dip switch or two.

In fairness loads of different models of electrical gates with a few 100 different frequency/code combinations. It wouldn't be worth a thief's time having key fobs for all, instead they will probably either rob your key fob (just like carkeys are increasingly getting robbed to lift cars), or just ram the gates.

OP have a look at the make of your gate system it should be on the box usually mounted inside the gates behind the wall for the make of system ( i assume the system came with the house which is why you haven't contacted your installer ) then google the system and see who near you deals with them, as already said somewhere if its a FAAC system it would be very easy to change as they use a simple dip switch setting but other ones might need a bit of programming or new fobs. Its probably not going to cost a lot as it should be a fairly easy fix. Where are you based someone here might even be able to put you onto an expert if you give the make of system and location.

Ah OK now I get it.

Round here the electric gates are in the fields where we ran out of insulators.

Stand on one leg, grit your teeth, and open away.

Nothing is secure if you think too much take the standard house door lock, two minutes to drill out a lock. The average sliding patio door can be lifted up off its rails and taken off. In alot of upvc windows take off the trim and take out the glass.

Pulled off the wall in a matter of seconds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,467 ✭✭✭✭salmocab

electric gates, alarms, dogs, thorn bushes, cameras, high walls etc are all deterrents they won't put off really determined burglars but they might make them move on to an easier target.

It all boils down to making your place less attractive or more troublesome than someone else's.

Now ya said it. Most houses that were robbed around here recently didn't have alarms

Thanks for the advice all. I'll try and get out to look at the box on the wall tomorrow, today was manic, didn't have a moment to spare (very literally). Will talk to the neighbour if I can find him. He's never around!!
