Never drank them until my mid twenties. So fizzy water and juice could work

    Other suggestions?

    Don't buy them.

I gave them up last year. I did it by putting a slice of lemon in a glass of water, & drinking that. By now, I don't even bother with the lemon, water on it's own is fine by me.

I did it the slow way. Used to drink 1 can at my dinner in work every day.

Over a few weeks I dropped it down to 3/4 then 1/2 then a few sips. Now don't drink fizzy drinks at all.

Well I might have a little indulgence once in a while.

Its mostly water I drink now. Sometimes I'd add some my wadi.

One game at a time. Don't worry about forever. Just don't have "this" one. Everytime you have to chose a drink take 1 second and then say I'll have a water. My takeaway keeps sending them as part of a meal deal I didn't order. Stacking up in the fridge now.

Best advice is dont buy them.

Other than that Coke zero fizzy water or effervescent vitamin C wont do you any harm

Not sure how fizzy water & juice is any different.

Loads of sugar, carbonated water and high acid. You will still turn in to no teef Keith.

Just stop drinking them, its not crack your weining yourself off. If you can't stop drinking pop, never ever try anything truly Moorish.

Disagree I have recently give up coca cola (was drinking 5-6 cans a day) was a lot harder than giving up cigarettes
I went on to sprite zero which I soon intend to be rreplaced by sparking water and eventually hope to just drink still water

I bought a sodastream for us, now I don't bother with cans or other stuff and have that instead... Cuts out the choice to make while shopping, just have soda water from that

I gave up Coke last Christmas (2013) and then gradually gave up the rest..Absolutely no need to drink them. Even if I'm having a cheat meal or that I'll still have water. I found the feeling after drinking them was awful and would leave me gassy and bloated.
Without doubt they were the item i cut from my diet that made me feel the best.

You realise those no sugar drinks have loads of E numbers, Chemicals and Asparteme in them to replace the sugar. In my eyes they're worse, especially the asparteme!

As soon as you want one, drink a glass or water asap, you wont want a drink anymore.

I do agree with the above though, just stop buying them. Exercise some self-control.

My understanding of artificial sweeteners is that the body creates insulin in anticipation of sugar that doesn't arrive. Which in large doses can be much worse than simply drinking sugar..

I have read this as well. People in medical profession are predicting a lot more cases of type 2 diabetes from them.

I did just google it though and couldn't find a really strong source to back this up, so maybe its more nonsense!

I just imagined a tub of ben and jerry's and it spiked my insulin.....

Artificial sweeteners have no nutritional value and will not cause an insulin response.

    It's not all about insulin.

Some interesting research out there on artificial sweeteners and effect on gut bacteria.

The study was published in Suez, J. Nature last Sept. It was a large scale experiment on lab mice and a small scale experiment on Humans. The study was criticised for its overall size. But its findings are interesting regardless, claiming that both mice and humans expressed different reactions to sugar substitutes depending on their gut bacteria composition. Based on the research done, I would expect something much larger and comprehensive over the next 2 years to come out.

    That's what I did.
I drink milk water now and cranberry juice
Id have maybe a glass on 7up/club orange on the weekend, its not that hard.

Full Fat (non diet) or Diet - moderation is the key - why eliminate completely?

A glass a day will do little harm. Isn't some of the tap water meant to be bad for you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭crazyderk

I drank about the same as you OP 1 can per day, maybe more on the weekends I just went cold turkey on it. I knew it would take a week or two before the cravings went away so I just had that figure in my head. I actually went about 6 months with no soft drinks then had one while on holidays. I would now maybe have 1 per week or 2 weeks

But isn't your body preparing itself for a sugar intake and for you body to get ready to break down the sugar into energy. The "artifical" sugar causes this reaction but then when it tries to break it down there's nothing to break down. It was fake essentially. Causing your body to do all sorts...

I'm not in any way an expert but it makes sense to me. Either way I agree, there's no nutritional value at all!

Drink water, I know it may not be as appealing but after a few days you won't have the cravings any more..

Might want to up your caffeine intake from other sources in the interim. Cold turkey doesn't work for everyone. I replaced coke with coffee no sugar then cut out e eventually
