Howth Trail – Boardsies Social Run Friday 3rd April (Good Friday)

Following on from the success of the Djouce Trail Run (read all about it and see our smiley faces and mucky runners here), it’s proposed to have a similar social run on the first weekend of every month, the precise day to be determined by TRQ*

Next up will be a loop of Howth (route description and map here) on Good Friday 3rd April. Time TBC but will be early to avoid potential crowds on the Cliff Path section of the route. It’s billed as a 10K but in reality it’s closer to 13K and will take anything from 80 to 120 mins+. There are a few climbs but the terrain is pretty good so normal runners are fine, trail runners better if you have them as some sections could be mucky depending on the weather. This will be a social run: nobody will be left behind/running on their own. Meeting Point will be the DART station in Howth and there is plenty of (free) parking close by.

So post up if you’re interested and final details will be posted and/or PM’d closer to the time.

    Oh, and bring cake.

Think I might be able to join for this one (then 2 full days off before the Clontarf 10miles) ... is it ok to bring a couple of non-boards runners if there is interest?

These are normal runners I think ;)

Great that you'll be in Dublin for this one. It'll be good training for your 7 Hills! And of course friends are welcome. If we end up with big numbers we can split into a couple of groups.

Great idea - could well be up for this, depending on how work pans out

For more info here is my Strava of this: https://www.strava.com/activities/214514985 or Garmin: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/624882441

If you're more adventurous you can go over the summit of Shielmartin Hill rather than around the shoulder of it as I did here - this once also took a detour to another summit but taking in Shielmartin summit doesn't take you much off the Bog of Frogs loop: https://www.strava.com/activities/219743670 (Garmin: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/633858555)

If I'm free I might pop along to this.

You definitely want to be done before the 1st Dart into Howth in the morning arrives with a load of walkers as the trail is narrow enough.

Might give it a go also...

I did it with Christeb many years ago. If its a good day (morning), the views are fantastic.

Ill have a search around the pics and post up, if I can find them.

yay! I'll definitely make this one, no chance of being called into work :-) I have walked Howth summit a few times but before my running days so will be great to run this, stunning views.

Here it is. T'was a fine day out, even if I recall being rather hungover.

I'd be up for doing it again, any excuse to run that loop. It's class.

Great review. I'm not sure I'd be able for those cliffs with a hangover
The plan for this run is to stay on the trail at Sutton rather than return to Howth via Offington. So we'll take a right at the Martello Tower and head up Red Rock, Howth Golf Club, past the GAA pitches and down the old tramway back to the DART station.

Ha ha, that wasn't lost on me either! Hoping for a calm and non-blustery day.

Why not just stay on the purple route ? It's a much more interesting run

I missed that...sorry! I would recommend trail runners here is possible. The section after the lighthouse is usually quite sloppy.

Walked Howth head on Friday from Sutton Dingy club to the village.

Took a few pics on the phone on the way around, though it might be of interest for some people not familiar with some of the route, and the fantastic views.

The paths are mostly ok now, a few boggy bits, and a few pools of water remain, but with 3-4 day of dry weather they should disappear.

The track is pretty narrow, so be aware if you are doing this on Good Friday, later in the morning or afternoon there will be plenty of other walkers, and few places to pass them.

    Fab pics! Thanks.
Yup we are going to have to have an early start...

Those photos are beautiful. If it comes to a tie between the trail run and the Battle of Clontarf, this'll be the one that wins!

    Do both! :)

That was my plan or then is that completely nuts, I hadn't thought so?
Just obviously need to get back into training of course.

Don't think nuts at all fitness/racing .... I'm in Dublin for just 5 days and if family start rolling-the-eyes then I might feel I should chop one. But more likely will dress-up the Friday run as a meet-with-friends!

+1. You can always cut the Howth run short by doing an out and back rather than the full loop. Added bonus of being first back for the cake :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,984 ✭✭✭Duanington

Don't think its COMPLETELY nuts to do both....kind of nuts but not completely :-)

I'll hopefully be doing both anyway :)

Not nuts at all... the Friday run will be slow and social :)

So what's the deal here BG. Meet up where? What time are you thinking etc??

    I like to plan ahead!(
Get permission to go out and play :-)

Good call, I was going to bump this up today anyway :)

I know we need an early start but in fairness to those coming from southside and beyond it can't be the crack of dawn either. How about 9.30 ?? Meeting point is Howth Dart Station. Plenty of free parking around there and close to a few cafes and shops.

what? we're letting people in from the Southside? :D

9:30 sounds good to me but will defer to those who have to travel further...

don't forget the 'and beyond' Anna! it seems you're letting all sorts join in :D as one coming from beyond 9.30 is good with me too, sure there will be no one on the roads at that hour on a good Friday...

Looks like I can make it! I've just bought some trail runners so its the perfect excuse to try them out! 9.30 suits fine.
Do I need my passport to go to the north side?

9:30 is good for me too. Any later though and I would probably have to give it a miss.
