Good news. Wasn't going to be able to do a weekday jaunt to Cork. At least they announced it before Cork went on sale.

oh excellent, had considered the drive down and back but this is great

What's Kilmainham like as a venue?

Was hoping he might play the Olympia or even Iveagh Gardens

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,834 ✭✭✭Toast

Been a while since I've been at a gig there (was Iggy Pop I believe 4/5 years ago?) but it's like a bigger Iveagh Gardens. A wider setup than the long one in Iveagh Gardens. If the weather is good it should be grand.

Was at the last Lennie Cohen one there, it's a great venue if the weather is good, easy to get in and out of.

blur , a couple of summers ago was as bad a gig i have ever been to in regards organisation.

congestion and queues everywhere. plus the bottlekneck at the gates when large crowds leaving.

What's with all the big midweek gigs? Promoters make more profit at these? Meh. Love Beck, not loving the ^ report about a badly organised venue, nor the midweek time. Might have to give this a miss.:(

It was grand for Biffy last summer.

Its only like a 7,500 capacity set up for the gigs like last year

I wouldn't mind seeing Beck again, he was bloody amazing at EP last year.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

I was at that too, appalling organisation, queues for everything, the bars were ridiculous.

Then on the way out it was bordering on dangerous

So after the blur gig I swore I would never go near this venue again. Music way too low, the most ridiculous queue for a beer I have ever seen, and the risk of death trying to leave the narrow exit. Did transition year students organise it?

Then I get an email from MCD, beck Friday the 17th, feck it, not a bad way to start the weekend. Confirmation email States Wednesday the 17th.

Sheeeeeeet, the Friday was the deal maker. Anyone else see the incorrect day on the ad? I don't know if I could be arsed risking my life for a Wednesday night gig

<rant>After that blur gig I told myself I wouldn't go to a outdoor gig like that in Dublin again.

In addition to the awful organisation and low sound levels there seemed to be an incredibly large number of people there who had no interest whatsoever in the gig itself and just wanted to chat with their mates......this coupled with the low sound levels made for a very frustrating experience.</rant>

Still, picked up tickets for Beck anyway!

I haven't seen him since he supported Radiohead in Marley Park a good few years back but he always puts on a good show.

Won tickets for this one yesterday :)

Anyone know what to expect from Jonny Greenwood?

Re concerns about setup I agree the Bur gig was horrendous (I was lucky enough to be in the pit) Last years setup was totally different, smaller and worked very well. I was at both Jack White and Elbow and they were both relaxed with no queues at all. I imagine the setup will be similar for Beck

is johnny greenwood playing with beck in cork or is this just a dublin thing

Anyone know what to expect from Jonny Greenwood?

They play some stuff from his soundtracks, some of his other compositions and some covers

There's a video of one of their concerts from last year here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG8GR1msPpo

Anyone know the set times or have a guess. I see the gates open at 18:30

I'd say MCD will announce the stage times on their Twitter and/or Facebook pages on the day of the gig or the day before.

Really liking that! Sounds like it would be a lot of fun live. :D

I have to pack in as much Beck as I can before Wednesday night; I bought my ticket on the strength of "Morning Phase" (which was one of my favourite albums of last year) but a glance at recent selists indicates that he's not playing much from that album at the moment. I'm not actually all that familiar with his back catalogue, bar his most famous ones, but have listened to a few here and there and most of what I have heard I've really liked. :)

Anyone know what this venue is like for parking??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,058 ✭✭✭JJ

    http://www.mcd.ie/home/fn.php?c=9398305&ar=beck

"Fans attending are advised that there is no parking at the venue and to use public transport and city centre car parks."

There is paid parking at Heuston Station and at Heuston South Quarter. There is some on street parking nearby but it's very limited. You could also do the Park & Ride at the Red Cow Luas stop.

Does anyone have information on stage times? Maybe I missed it but can't find any details anywhere

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,834 ✭✭✭Toast

Not announced yet. Is there a third support act or just the two? I wouldn't be surprised if it's Johnny at 7.30 Beck at 8.40 if it's the two.

I thought Johnny was playing with Beck? So I assumed no support, but then only info MCD have provided is show 6:30?!?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,058 ✭✭✭JJ

6.30pm would be when the gates open. The support is probably on about an hour after that.

Great gig. Him and band were spot on with set list I felt. Played something from almost all his albums as I recall and interacted with the crowd.

Not sure how Johnny greenwood got a support act with him to be honest. While beck and most of his fans would have a fairly out there musical taste, this project just did not suit an outdoor mid-week gig. It has its place somewhere alright, but better off keeping it in movies where it was composed for. And that's coming from a radiohead fan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,337 ✭✭✭positivenote

Johnny greenwood orchestra was lost and a waste of time to be honest... someone/band playing a bit of melody would have been better. Beck was brilliant, band was as tight as you'd expect... BUT .. it was way to short. He was only getting rocking and it was over. with a catalogue as big as he has another 30 mins would have been a walk in the park for him. Great gig, to short

Gig was great, ideally I would have liked to have heard more from the latest album. And I'm disappointed he didn't play "Girl", which he does usually do. But other than that I can't have any complaints!

"E-Pro" and "Loser" were a lot of fun, as expected. Was surprised at how cool "Hell Yes" was live though - it's not a song I had paid much attention to before but hearing it live has definitely made me appreciate it more.

The real goosebump moment though was "Lost Cause" - amazing song, so glad I got to hear it live!!

I thought the gig was awfully short

I second that.. for a standalone gig it was over very quickly. even encore was short.

good gig with all the hits but a little rushed?

just the 2 songs from Morning phase as far as i recall

Nice to hear Timebomb in there though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,996 ✭✭✭✭billymitchell

The gig was supposed to start about a half an hour earlier than it did, think he didnt get on stage until about 9:15, which means it was about 30 minutes shorter than it could have been

That's a shame. I was thinking about other songs I would loved to hear, enough for another set!

how long was he on stage for folks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,658 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

I live nearby and could hear the concert pretty well, started around 9:15, finished about 10:20, had an encore and was finally done by 10:35

I thought the gig was awfully short

This seems to be a growing and worrying trend in this country whereby artists think that they can charge 50-60 euro for a gig and play for 75-80 minutes.

Call me old fashioned but if I'm paying that sort of money and going to the trouble of traveling and taking time off I expect a gig of at least 100 minutes or preferably 2 hours .

Do you have a source for that? This documents suggests it was 11, not 10:30 http://dublincity.ie/sites/default/files/content/Planning/WeeklyPlanningLists/Documents/OEL_04_2015.pdf

It definitely finished before 10:30, I was at home and showering up before 11 (I live in D8).

was just going on previous years they are normally finish between 10:30 and 10:45

i loved last night , never understand why people base their gig on how long the band was on for , they played for about 1hr 25 and rocked every minute of it

Oh I know, I meant was the curfew definitely 10:30. I was expecting it to be 11.

Couldn't fault the gig, performance was fantastic, one of the best I've ever seen by anyone, unlike some on here I thought the duration was fine, I don't care for long gigs anyway just good ones. Even the stuff I didn't recognise was brilliant, "Sexx Laws" seemed to have got the best response and it was a smashing version. The "support band" was a total bore, nothing wrong with the music but more suited for the NCH, someone like "Villagers" would have been more appropriate, in Sweden its Pet Shop Boys, I'm not huge fan but much more appropriate than chamber music. I think Beck is the best music artist of his generation, NO one does the depth and breath of genres he does as good, he does folk, rock, pop, country, electro and hip hop and makes them his own, not in a forced way but because he obviously loves them and is influenced by them, I'd say only Bowie is in his class for doing that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭WindmillWarrior

Echo everyones sentiments in that it was an amazing gig. My first time seeing them and I loved how much of a showman Beck is. The duration didn't bother me too much, we left with big smiles on our faces, and thats good enough for me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,337 ✭✭✭positivenote

great gig, but my complaint at it being to short is out of a want to see more... seen him 3 times now and hes always superb. 60-75mins isnt enough to be headlining a gig. Consider how long Bruce plays for as an old man...
nonetheless, rather be left wanting more than not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,108 ✭✭✭Technocentral

3 hours is a bore, don't know why people expect it, 2 hours at the most is way more than enough.
