Fancy England for some reason, and Pakistan.

England win the toss and will bat

Love the never ending Sri Lankan anthem

    Bell's looking good/lucky.

Ali just gone. Whether a delusion or not, before that wicket despite England's great start a bit of a sense of their momentum/intent slowing.

    Will Ballance's poor form continue?

    Yep.

His continued selection looking pig-headed idiocy.

    Ballance gone for 6.
Will we see him again this world cup?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭pelevin

Have England batsmen got what it takes to grab back the momentum? Would be pretty typical if they don't.

So what would England be expected to score from here? 250-270?
You'd suspect that Sril Lanka would be well capable of reaching that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,421 ✭✭✭✭josip

Bell gone, I think they'll do well to make 220 now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭pelevin

Despite Bell's brilliant start he still ends up departing at less than a run a ball. Seems to kind of sum up England as a one day side.

Should still be looking for something approaching 300

After the relentless chaos of previous games between test nations, it's hard to believe we haven't had to mention the word collapse so far tonight..... what's going on? :P

Who the hell instigated that review?!

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Well done Joe Root - has really held the innings together and thoroughly deserves his century

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

... and 25 in the over - can live with that!

    257-4

    Indeed. Quality knock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭pelevin

Fair play to Root all right. Has kept England right in it. You'd still expect with Sri Lanka's batting quality, England need to really go hard from here on. Doesn't look like there's any reason they'd be scared by a 300 or so chase.

Taylor goes 259-5 with 4.3 overs left

Mainga writes off Buttler's helmet first ball. Could have been very nasty but he's looking to continue

    Lakmal trying to kill someone

England close on 309/6 - nice cameo from Buttler at the end with 39 off 19

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

310 needed for the win.....I don't see Sri Lanka chasing down this total but I think they'll get close.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 587 ✭✭✭axe2grind

Buttler facing only 19 balls is bad tactics.
    Great innings by Root

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 692 ✭✭✭res ipsa

Sri Lanka doing well 73 for 0 after 13 overs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

Pakistan 4-2 inside 4 overs..... this is good news for us so far. A modest Zimbabwe victory would be best for us, we don't want either of those 2 teams to improve their NRR by much.

Shouldn't we be wanting a Pakistan win there?

Definitely not I would say. If Zimbabwe win then it would pretty much set up a showdown between us and them for qualification. It won't be easy at all but personally I'd fancy our chances more against Zimbabwe than in a showdown against Pakistan.

Would we not need to beat Pakistan as well?

I know they are muck these days, but they are still big favs against us.

I'd rather have both Pakistan and Zimbabwe 2 points behind us than have one of them level with us TBH

If Pakistan lose against Zimbabwe then they can't catch us if we beat Zimbabwe, which we'll need to do anyway. Assuming Pakistan don't shock South Africa.

Well that goes without saying. In an ideal world we won't want to rely on NRR.

Yeah, but a Pakistan win tonight gives us that. A Zimbabwe win puts them level with us

But you're forgetting the wider picture.... Zimbabwe have played UAE and Pakistan have not. I'm not assuming anything but you would imagine Pakistan should see of UAE and could give their NRR a healthy boost to boot.

That's also true enough - though I'd fancy UAE to surprise someone in one of their remaining 3.

A few UAE players tried to break into Pakistan first class cricket and couldn't get in due to politics, most notable was Khan, so they will be seriously up for that game. They won't trouble the Saffers and West Indies though.

Yeah anything is possible and Pakistan are far from convincing. We need to beat Zimbabwe pretty much no matter what. I'm just hoping we won't have to beat Pakistan on top of that.

Sri Lanka are 172-1 after 32. 138 more runs needed, looking good so far for them but a long way to go yet.

Yeah, always were going to have to beat Zimbabwe no matter the results., although to be fair they would have been saying the same about us since the draw was made. Ideally the UAE and Saffers beat them as well.

Pakistan 14-2 after 10 overs. That's way too slow they'll need to pick it up. I'm relatively pleased though :pac:

    18-2 after 12 overs!

They are very old school in their batting!:D

Very reliant on the likes of Afridi/ Akmal and King Masqood to go big towards the end.

Yeah, way too cautious and way too reliant on Afridi. They're in trouble here.

England are losing this. SL 242/1 off 39, requiring 310

Ton up for Sangakkara. That's both guys in the middle past the century - no need to hold back for either of them now, so I'd assume they'll open up a little
