Ed Sheeran and Hotels

As expected, hotels have hiked prices on the weekend of Ed Sheerans gigs. One Dublin hotel has gone out of their way to look like the biggest assholes of the lot.... From Facebook (before its inevitably taken down). Check out the comments too....

    https://m.facebook.com/CharlevilleLodgeHotel/posts/901120083264035?locale2=en_GB&__tn__=%2As
We wish to advise that our room rates on the nights of 24th and 25th July 2015 are €279 per double room. In case you cannot read numbers, I will write the price in words. Two hundred and seventy nine euro. This time in words and in caps: TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY NINE EURO.

As far as I can see, the cheapest hotel room available in Dublin on these nights is €229, and this hotel is nearer to Achill Island than it is Dublin city. In case you weren't aware, an insanely talented, double Brit award winning singer-songwriter and musician is playing a sold out gig in a stadium under 15 minute’s walk from our hotel on these nights. If you are expecting reduced rates on these nights, you need your head examined more than I do. However, if you are a Herald.ie reader, I don’t blame you for being so ill-advised. It’s not your fault at all.

If you are not happy to pay the going rate on the nights of the concerts, may I suggest you check availability in the following establishments:

St Vincent De Paul Shelters: http://bit.ly/1MUHL7z

    Dublin Simon Emergency Accommodation: http://bit.ly/1GxxrOi

Peter McVerry Trust Accommodation Services: http://bit.ly/1ANSiuN

These establishments tend to be free of charge. They may not have Snuggledown of Norway duvets and flat screen TV’s (not to mention the free Taytos), or 20 staff members looking after you (who surprisingly enough have to be paid), but I believe the accommodation is very adequate. At the end of the day, beggars can’t be choosers.

Alternatively, if you don’t mind sharing with a dog, may I suggest you check out the Pet Boarding Kennels at the DSPCA. Canines are usually more accommodating than humans, as their love tends to be unconditional. They also like to spoon (I am told).

    DSPCA Pet Boarding Kennels: http://bit.ly/1zKB9Q3

Whatever establishment you decide to book on the night of the concert, I wish you a very pleasant stay. But please remember in future that hotels tend to be businesses, not charities.

    Cheers now,

    PVS

P.S. If you are going to book a room with us, I suggest you do it quickly on our website www.charlevillelodge.ie. Don’t come running back to me in a few day’s time when your only options are to stay in a dog kennel or in a €900 room in The Shelbourne where the curtains are made out of Belgian chocolate and one of the Queen’s late, taxidermied corgis is sitting at the base of your bed. The choice is yours folks.

Lots of empty rooms that weekend would be karma.

They don't seem like arseholes at all. The general public who don't understand the concept of Supply and Demand look like arseholes. Read the comments. I'd confidently say the average IQ is that of a grapefruit.

I live on the 16 bus route about half an hour from croker, I might rent out a room for the night and see what happens

Is it really supply and demand pre raising prices before any actual demand, That's actually called profiteering.

What kind of t-shirts? Ginger t-shirts?

From what I've read in the comments most people understand that prices go up due to increased demand.

The main issue seems to be the arrogant assholery tone of their post.

Clearly written by some snot nosed junior manager with a trumped up view of himself and the hotel.

Had it been remotely funny they might get away with it but its a big fail on that front as well.

It looks more like a hostel that's trying too hard than a hotel. I wouldn't stay there if it had the cheapest rooms in the area.

They come across as narcissistic **** anyway.. I don't see how 'supply and demand' excuses that. There'll no doubt be a grovelling apology soon and some bull about a junior staff member managing their Facebook account.

True for him though, it is indeed a business he's running and not a charity. He'll have no problem filling every room even if he were to charge €400 for a single room.

I'd sooner stay in the Shelbourne myself, those Belgian chocolate curtains sound delicious.

Most of the people who commented said they didn't mind the expected price hikes .......... it's the attitude of the Hotel (trumped up Hostel actually) that bothers potential customers.

The arsehole who wrote this on behalf of the "hotel" is lacking basic common sense ........... was he/she trying to be funny? FAIL!!!!

It's just some fool looking for cheap publicity.
It's been done before......by the same hotel.
    Cheap publicity - expensive rooms.
    Would suit some people ok.

Well actually most comments seem to fail to grasp S&D, basic spelling, and have taken to Trip advisor in a show of petulance to negatively assess a hotel they never stayed in. Mouthbreathers the lot of them

I'd rather stay on Achill island that weekend away from Dublin. They're not very good at holding concerts anyway.

The arse hole who wrote it, knew it would go viral, and the bigger an arse hole they sounded, the more widespread it would go. Michael O' Leary has been doing that same shtick for decades now and Ryanair is one of the most successful airline carriers in the world.

Let me guess ........... YOU'RE the arsehole who works for the "hotel" and thought you were being extremely witty!!! :D

But no ........ you're still just an arsehole :(

Having read some of their other posts there's no way I'd ever consider paying to stay in that place.

Ed Sheeran should not have a monopoly on being Ed Sheeran - that's what the problem is.

Monopolies are rarely good for consumers.

Saw a sizeable crowd of teenagers queuing for tickets last night here in Sligo. Sleeping bags and everything. Pissed rain almost the whole night and into the early morning. Was fecking delighted! :D

Cue the faux outrage as people pretend to be offended by this. Massive appetite for outrage on the internet in general and fb in particular.

One girl felt aggrieved by the reference to Achill Island, as if implying it was quite far from Dublin was some kind of insult. A couple more castigate the hotel for being "uneducated" and treating the public like idiots their points being undermined by their own use of textese and ballistic approach to English.

Naturally, the keyboard warriors fell over themselves to get offended on behalf of homeless people never mind that most of them would throw themselves under a bus to avoid contact with one.

Anyone else think that Ed Sheeran looks like a cloned and rebooted version of Jimmy Savile for this generation?

Jeez, I'm no great fan of Ed Sheeran but that's a fairly sinister comparison to make.

    Unfair on the young man.

It's not really profiteering at this stage. Every hotel does it as a matter of policy. Their rooms are in high demand so they price accordingly. What about the other end of the year when hotels can't find people for their rooms and sell at reduced prices? I suppose you're ok with that arrangement or would you rather pay full price in the off season?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,009 ✭✭✭✭hynesie08

I love the guy who runs that page, the rooms will still get booked and the angry Facebook mob will give him all the publicity he wants, same thing happened last year when he announced the garth gigs were back on.

The free-market rules of supply and demand are fine. If hotels want to work by the "Survive in a competitive world or die" rules, that's fair enough.

However, my pension fund is being levied to lower the VAT on their services to 9%. And I can tell you that in places I stay, hotel prices didn't fall when that was introduced.

They want to raise prices as high as possible, but then be supported by levies applied to their customers? They can f*** right off.

I wouldn't say Croke Park is under 15 minutes walk from there. Not a long walk but definitely not that quick. From a quick look at their facebook, this sort of stuff seems to just be their "thing"

I live fairly close to that "hotel" and would pass it quite often, there's always people coming and going, I'm not saying it's full, but they're obviously getting customers from somewhere.

    I'll say one thing..
Having read through a few of their other posts, they make their own hotel/hostel sound like a right sh1tbox. Posts about copulating couples and hookers.
    Classy joint alright.
At least you dont need tripadvisor for this one, they tell you themselves not to stay here if you want a decent hotel experience.

Well Ireland is officially doomed, we've lost our once proud ability to have a bitta crac. Honestly some people must actively search out things to be outraged at.

It's a joke. And a pretty funny one at that.
