    Cheers in advance

So, a Chilli con Vege then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Doesn't use lentils but this could do the trick for a veggie chilli... http://www.nufo.ie/recipes/010/20003-mixedbeanchilli.html

Pretty much a con carne but uses mixed beans instead of the beef.

My wife makes a gorgeous chilli just using quorn mince instead of meat. I'm not a vegetarian but its my favourite dish!

I do this for my wife for stuff like Bolognese etc, just make up the sauce and lash in the quorn for her.

I've never used quorn but I imagine you could just use a standard CCC recipe and bulk it out with chopped carrots and peppers and additional beans (loads to choose from) and you would end up with a bean chilli that was pretty similar to a CCC.

Yeh we do the same although often I just go with the quorn too so its easier I like the consistency of it. Works great for spag/chilli etc.

Yeh bit of mine, half a pepper and some mushrooms works a treat!

Try this one from the Lovely Nigella goddess of gastroporn.
Has a cornbread topping which makes it a one pot meal.

    Here's another one: http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/vegetables-recipes/kerryann-s-chilli-con-veggie/#SuZCZ1mbjuFbL8cz.97

I love lentils in any form, but lentil bolognese and lentil chili are firm favourites!

Now THAT is one I will try. The Nigella one sounded a good idea with the corn bread baked on top, but reading through what goes in it all sounds a bit too sweet for my taste.

Jamie's is goning to get cooked on the weekend now - I'll report back :)

Definitely gonna try the Jamie one. Always on the look out for good vegetarian dishes and this one looks perfect.

    Any substitute for the wine?

    Huh?

What wine? There's no mention of wine in that recipe as far as I can see.

Drink a glass after. If you do it while cooking, you might drink the bottle.

Jamie's chilli con veg is simmering on the stove as I type. Halved the original recipe. Bulked it up with pepper that I needed to use up, carrot and celery. No black turtle beans so I used more kidney beans. I'm already looking forward to eating this.

Can almost smell it! I usually halve the recipe, too. My sons are big meat eaters, but there are no complaints when I serve this.

Same as carnivorous Mr Fox. I've just texted him there saying we've Chilli if he's coming home for lunch. I deliberately left out con veg :D
I've tasted a couple of teaspoons here, very delicious indeed.

Do you know the way you read something, and then it's on your mind for the day. Have to make a pot of the Jamie one tomorrow, or I'll never get through the weekend.

I'm the same. I'll be making it on Saturday even though I made my usual huge pot of CCC last Saturday that gets bagged for the freezer.

Me three!! Definitely making it this weekend!!:D

Just threw on a pot of it there, going to do mine in the slow cooker, and have beefed up the veg somewhat and may add courgettes at the end...

Its a lot of fibre for one meal tho:eek:

Gonna rob this idea too, containers take up way too much space.

Bags are brilliant for defrosting too. I just put the bag into a bowl and cover it with hot water and it defrosts in about 10-20 mins.

Have the Jamie Oliver one on the go now, smells great!

I think I need a bigger pot. Put in 3 grated carrots and 3 chopped celery, with red chilli bean paste. If I'm not back by Monday, the food coma was worth it.

I made this last night. Beautiful dish. So filling for a veggie dish. I added in a big bunch of chopped coriander at the end and served it with rice, grated cheese and sour cream.
The black beans are lovely, I think I'll be using them in the next CCC that I make, along with the regular kidney beans.

The recipe says that it serves 10 people but I got 14 portions (9 of those are in the freezer to have as dinner when I can't be bothered to cook).

In my boredom I also worked out that it works out at around 0.80c per portion which is incredible value.

I've got today off, and just put the slow cooker on - the house already smells absolutely gorgeous. I'll post pictures tonight :)

I'll be picking up some lentils and getting in on the action here. If it's half as good as ye're saying it must be fantastic.

Where are you guys picking up your tins of black beans for this recipe?! I've tried my local tesco, dunnes and supervalu but no luck!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,737 ✭✭✭✭kylith

I know they have dried black turtle beans in my local Tesco, but that adds extra faff to the dish. I wonder would Whole foods places have them.

I got them in Eurasia off the Fonthill Road. They're also called Black turtle beans. They were in tins.

My dad's favourite meal is chilli and he's just been put on a no red meat diet, so I think I'll try making this for him over the weekend. How long do people think it would need to go in a slow cooker for?

It only takes an hour to make the regular way once the veg are fired off.

I try to support my local spice shop bit buying the canned stuff off them too. Chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans. Great value buying rice as well.

I did it in the slow cooker, with dried beans and lentils (I had no tins, and always have the cupboard full of beans and lentils, they're one of our staple foods), it took about 4 hours for the beans to be fully cooked.

It was really, really delicious. But for the next one, I'll be adding some chopped bell peppers - somehow, it's not a chili for me without them.

I know, slow cooker is mainly for convenience so I don't need to worry about pottering about while the hob is on.

Thanks shenshen, four hours ballpark is good to know :)

Do you cook them from dry in the slow cooker? Do you need to soak them first?

I usually put in some thickly sliced baby sweetcorn too. Adds a bit of crunch :)

I get them in my local Dunnes. The brand is Epicure. The tins have a greenish label.

I cooked them from dry. I find particularly black turtle beans somehow "drain" colour while soaking, and grey beans just aren't nice-looking,

Tried Chilli using Quorn recently, must say it was a pleasant surprise as I was fairly sceptical about using it.

Other times I've just bulked up on pulses, corn and barley.

I call it chilli sin carne, but that sounds a bit odd. (Lots of holidays in lanzo when i was younger, don't get the aqua con gas and the aqua sin gas mixed up)!
