I was wondering, is smoking weed legal or illegal in ireland? in case it's illegal can I bust someone for doing it or won't the police do anything about it?

because my housemate is smoking weed and I get pain in my head from it, he is addicted to it and also to gambling.

so I was wondering if I can bust the guy to make him go away :p

Try a citizens arrest on him and march him to the local police station IMO.

Not to be thinking totally out of the box here but have you tried maybe talking to him before getting cops involved

It is illegal but I think it's just a fine unless he has a large amount or is growing/dealing

weed is illegal, but unless he's got a grow-op going on in the house, you'll find it hard to get the guards to do anything I'm afraid!

Note to any boardsie, living in Leixlip, smoking weed in front of your house mate, beware, he may be a complete d1ck.

OP, just ask him to smoke it in his room or not in your presence?

Have you asked him to smoke it outside ? I can't understand why some Irish people think its acceptable to smoke indoors. My parents are landlords and the only tenants that smoke inside are Irish. It's rank and inconsiderate of others

Become a meth addict, it's the only solution. Talking to him could cause momentary awkwardness.

I'd confront him and ask that he stop. Or let the landlord know. There's absolutely no reason you should have to put up with the bad habits of others.

It must be intolerable living with a weed smoker. The smell, the laziness, the paranoia, the rambling nonsense that they think is profound, the hogging of the couch as they sit around watching rubbish like Family Guy.

Best of luck, OP. Don't suffer in silence.

'Bust' him as in what... waste peoples time by whinging to them about an issue you could easily deal with yourself?

You're not seriously contemplating getting Gardai involved in it are you?! Smoking the stuff isn't illegal in and of itself. You'd need for him to be found in possession and even then it's likely to be ignored unless he was intending to sell it.

Out of interest, how do you know he's addicted to either weed or gambling? Is it because both are things he sometimes does that you see as destructive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,233 ✭✭✭shamrock55

Bet him a grand that he cant stop, being a gamling addict he wont be able to resist, he will stop for a while but because he is also addicted to weed he will go back on it and you will not only have had a period of no weed, but you will have made a grand, its a win win, for you anyway;)

But what if he's paranoid that his flatmate is going to call the cops on him? Is that still classed as paranoia in this case?

Weed is virtually harmless, If you dislike the smell of it, ask him to smoke it outside. I highly doubt he's addicted to weed, considering that's been conclusively proven impossible, some people just like to smoke a bit of weed as a past time. I will admit, if he's smoking it in the house, he's being a little inconsiderate, if you have a problem with him smoking it outdoors, you need to lighten up a little.

I call fibs.. Op if your actually telling the truth(it is a fairly dubious claim to be honest) why not tell the chap to knock it in on the head.No need to be a complete pr1ck about it. For a start,if you ever tried to 'bust' me for smoking, or anything else for that matter you can be rest assured that I would 'bust' you.
    Repeatedly.

Don't call the fcuking cops. Just tell him not to smoke in the house. I have no problem with potheads and I wouldn't call the law on anyone who's smoking the herb. Personally I've tried it a few times and don't like it and I hate the smell. If I was sharing with someone who smoked their ganja in the house I would have a serious problem the same as someone smoking a cigar in the living room. Get him to do it outside or in his room with the windows open.

Sounds like you were just living with a messy, inconsiderate asshole. I've never heard of anyone leaving rotting food anywhere after a case of the munchies, much less in the bathroom. And marijuana paranoia really doesn't manifest itself in that way. At least I've never seen it do that anyway. The suicide thing most likely didn't come from the marijuana, much more likely the person in question was using the marijuana to cover up some underlying problems.

The Gardai will laugh at you if you went to them.

Well, maybe they won't laugh at you but they'll laugh behind your back when you're gone and type up the report on their invisible typewriter.

For food to be rotting, it has to be uneaten. And if someone had "the munchies", I doubt they'll leave any food anywhere. I'm calling BS on this.

    =-=

Ask him not to smoke inside? Flushing his weed down the toilet will just get you slaps, so I'd advise against it.

Smoking anything in a shared house isn't cool. Unless everyone else in the house is a smoker and ye are all happy to smoke inside, then fair enough, but otherwise it should be outside. I never smoked inside, cos everything would stink afterwards. And the smell of weed's worse, takes feckin ages to get the smell out (I happen to quite like the smell, but turning up to work in a suit that reeks of ganja doesn't exactly endear you to management).

The gambling addiction is none of your business, but it's not fair for him to be smoking in the house. I'd recommend you go up to him and say something like "Hey man, your weed's giving me a headache, any chance you could smoke it outside? Or out your bedroom window? Cheers."

If I have learned anything from After Hours it is this:

Tell him that if he puts his arm around your girlfriend again you'll stab him in his sleep.

Then burn the house down anyway

Don't forget to blast the smoldering ruins with piss before riding his Ma

    That'll learn him etc

Burn the house down, but you may get locked up because you're technically smoking weed too if his stash ignites

Such a casual acceptance of this nihilistically aberrant and noxiously abhorrent behaviour is a sad indictment of the wilful abandonment of the moral fortitude which was the hallmark of bygone generations and which served them and us so well, by the benighted scions of relativism.

    For shame.

OP, you shouldn't have to put up with it!

Weed is psychologically addictive, and only seems harmless when using it.

What business is it of yours wether he's addicted to gambling? Absolutely none of your concern. With regards smoking weed, ask him to go outside or open a window. If I lived with you & you called the guards without talking to me first I'd cut your two legs off. I'm serious. I had issues with a housemate who used to go behind my back & instead of talking to me he'd bitch & moan about me to anyone who'd listen.

I said nothing & didn't pay rent for 3 months, I kept saying to him that I'd pay him "in a couple of weeks". When he demanded the money I had already found a new apartment & was in the process of packing up my stuff. He went off to work one day & said "my money better be here when I get back". Instead of coming home to a big cheque he came home to an empty room & not a schilling in rent from me. I purposely messed him around because he was doing the same to me. Met him in flannerys one night & he tried to have a go at me so I dropped him. Haven't seen him since & I hope he's still bitter over the unpaid rent.

Anyway OP, I hope you either get a dig or messed around or preferably both because you seem like a right twat.

Different strokes for different folks. Some folks would not like the effects of Cannabis but some love it and can handle it very easily. I would say this though... if a person has tried it and didn't like it at all then it's not for this person and it would be better to stay away from it. It just affects people differently.

I've personally no problem at all doing weeks off of it, I don't feel any addictive feeling to it. Well I suppose I don't smoke much of it, so it's probably easier for me personally to not touch it for weeks even. The goo does get going after 2 weeks though when in the mood but have none.
